A process of liquefying gas to produce a liquid cryogen comprising compressing a gas stream using a compressor, work expanding the compressed gas stream using at least one expansion turbine to produce an expanded gas stream together with power, mechanically transferring the power generated by the expansion turbine(s) to drive the compressor, using the expanded gas stream to provide refrigeration duty for liquefaction, and recycling the cooled expanded compressed gas stream to the compressor.

Method and apparatus for the production of a liquid cryogen

A method for the separation of a feed gas mixture comprising oxygen and nitrogen in which an oxidant gas and fuel are combusted in a combustion engine to generate shaft work and a hot exhaust gas, the feed gas mixture comprising oxygen and nitrogen is compressed, and the resulting compressed feed gas mixture is separated into two or more product gas streams with differing compositions. The shaft work of the combustion engine is utilized to provide at least a portion of the work required for compressing the feed gas mixture, one of the product gas streams by is heated by indirect heat exchange with the hot exhaust gas from the combustion engine, and the resulting heated product gas is work expanded to generate shaft work and yield an expanded product gas stream. The combustion engine may be a gas turbine combustion engine.

Air separation process integrated with gas turbine combustion engine driver

The generation of electric power and the separation of a feed gas mixture containing oxygen and nitrogen are carried out by combusting an oxidant gas and fuel in a combustion engine to generate shaft work and a hot exhaust gas, utilizing the shaft work to drive an electric generator to provide the electric power, compressing the feed gas mixture and separating the resulting compressed feed gas mixture into two or more product gas streams with differing compositions, heating one of the product gas streams by indirect heat exchange with the hot exhaust gas, and work expanding the resulting heated product gas stream to generate shaft work and yield an expanded product gas stream. The feed gas mixture can be air and the combustion engine can be a gas turbine combustion engine, and the air separation process preferably is operated independently of the gas turbine combustion engine.

Operation of an air separation process with a combustion engine for the production of atmospheric gas products and electric power

The present invention is an improvement to a process for the conversion of natural gas to produce higher molecular weight hydrocarbon products, wherein the natural gas is partially oxidized to produce a synthesis gas comprising carbon monoxide and hydrogen, wherein the synthesis gas is catalytically reacted to produce the higher molecular weight hydrocarbon products, wherein the conversion process generates excess steam and wherein oxygen used to partially oxidize the natural gas is produced by an air separation process. The improvement is characterized by operating such air separation process at an elevated pressure so that the feed air to the air separation process is compressed to between 8 and 20 Bar(a); expanding at least a portion of the excess steam generated by the conversion process to generate work and using at least a portion of the generated work to drive the compression requirements of the air separation process.
