Imaging devices and methods of operating imaging devices that facilitate reducing nonvolatile storage needs of the imaging devices. The imaging devices are adapted to request control programs from external devices. Control programs are received on a communication input of the imaging device and stored on a volatile storage media for use by a processor of the imaging device. The embodiments can also facilitate more reliable updating within a networked system in that updating an image of a control program on one network device can automatically lead to updating of multiple imaging devices, thus eliminating a need to individually update each imaging device. A default control program is used if no control program is received on the communication input within a predetermined timeout period.

Remote firmware upgrade via I/O connection

A method and apparatus for facilitating the upgrade of device drivers for computer peripheral devices includes detecting a version of the device driver in use by the computer from data sent by the computer to the peripheral device determining whether the version of the device driver may be out of date signaling the computer if it is determined that a newer version of the device driver may be available.

Device-based model for software driver delivery and upgrade

A method of revising multi-component software in a multifunctional printer, including revising at least one software component of the multi-component software, qualifying the multi-component software, bundling the multi-component software as a software bundle; and loading the software bundle on to a multifunctional printer. Additional methods and/or devices are also included.

Control of software via bundling

Systems and methods are described herein for utilizing a temporary firmware update for a printing device. A user of a shared printing device who desires to utilize a different version of printing device firmware than presently resides in the printing device submits temporary firmware with a print job. The temporary firmware is loaded into the printing device prior to the printing device processing the print job. When the print job is complete, the newly installed temporary firmware is deleted from the printing device and control is restored to the original firmware.

Temporary printer firmware upgrade

The present invention includes data imaging methods and image forming devices. One aspect of the present invention provides a data imaging method including the steps of providing an image forming device including a filter interface; communicating at least one data stream within the image forming device; adaptively interfacing a filter with the filter interface of the image forming device; accessing at least one data stream using the filter following the interfacing; and forming an image following the accessing.

Filter based data imaging method for an image forming device

An image forming device comprises an input for receiving a print job data stream, a memory coupled to the input for storing at least a portion of the print job data stream, and detection apparatus coupled to the memory for detecting at least two classes of indicia indicative of a banner page within the at least a portion of the print job data stream. The image forming device further includes management apparatus coupled to the detection apparatus for managing usage of the banner page independent of other pages defined in the print job data stream.

Banner page detection and handling mechanism

An image forming device comprises an input for receiving a print job data stream; a memory coupled to the input for storing at least a portion of the print job data stream; and, detection apparatus coupled to the memory for detecting indicia indicative of a banner page within the at least a portion of the print job data stream. The indicia includes, selectively, a job boundary, a printer description language used, a page size, complexity of a page, a page closing, a differentiation of print settings as between consecutive pages, or any combination thereof. The image forming device further includes management apparatus coupled to the detection apparatus for managing usage of the banner page in the image forming device, including controlling resolution of the banner page, controlling inclusion/exclusion of the banner page in finishing operations, controlling output quantity of the banner page, and controlling input and output tray selection for the banner page. Controlling the resolution of the banner page includes optimizing its resolution such that throughput of multiple print jobs in the image forming device is enhanced.
