A modular CPU cooling unit designed to fit within the available space within an existing box or cabinet containing a CPU. The fan, pump and liquid to air cross flow heat exchanger are fitted within the available volume with the fan spaced away from the heat exchanger a suitable distance to pull air through the entire face area of the heat exchanger, even though it is considerably larger than the fan.

An improved motor vehicle automatic climate control methodology develops HVAC commands for transient phase operation independent of the HVAC commands calibrated for steady-state phase operation. At system activation, a transient phase indicator is initialized based on the cabin temperature and the set temperature, and thereafter updated to reflect progress toward steady-state phase operation. The steady-state HVAC commands are based on ambient conditions and the set temperature, and the HVAC commands at system activation are based on the steady-state commands and offsets based on the initial in-car temperature. A transient modifier based on the transient phase indicator brings the initial HVAC commands into correspondence with the steady-state HVAC commands as the cabin temperature approaches the set temperature. The transient modifier can be a power function of the transient phase indicator, and the HVAC commands can be clamped at the initial values until the transient phase indicator reflects a predetermined amount of progress toward the steady-state phase.

Automatic climate control with tunable transient response

The presence of sufficient condensate flow for odor-free operation of an air conditioning system is detected based on the surface temperature of a thermistor disposed in a condensate drainpipe of the evaporator and the power supplied to the thermistor. The surface temperature is used to calculate the temperatures of stagnant circumambient air and water. If the temperature for stagnant air is approximately equal to the evaporator temperature, the evaporator is too dry and the operating point of the air conditioning system is lowered to reduce the surface temperature of the evaporator. If the temperature for stagnant water is approximately equal to the evaporator temperature, the drainpipe is plugged. Alternately, a constant power is supplied to the thermistor, and its surface temperature is compared to a set of experimentally determined reference temperatures to deduce the evaporator state.

A motor vehicle automatic climate control determines HVAC parameter values for satisfying the required heating or cooling effort for steady-state cabin air temperature regulation, and controls the HVAC settings based such parameter values and on the deviation of the cabin air temperature (T ) from the set temperature (TSET). If T is within a specified control band about TSET, the HVAC settings are controlled in accordance with the determined HVAC parameter values, but when T overshoots or undershoots the control band, the control enters a quasi-steady-state mode in which the control parameters are reset to drive T back in to the control band, and then brought into correspondence with the respective determined values based on the degree to which the overall control objective of regulating T at TSET is achieved.

Quasi-steady-state control method for a vehicle automatic climate control

A motor vehicle automatic climate control determines the heating or cooling influence of the deep mass components of the cabin and compensates the climate control to offset the thermal effects of the deep mass components on the cabin air temperature. The deep mass temperature is either measured or estimated by modeling, and combined with an estimate of the thermal resistance between the deep mass components and the cabin air to determine the heating or cooling power required to offset the deep mass temperature. The heating or cooling power so determined is used by a climate control algorithm to adjust the system air discharge velocity and temperature, directly compensating for the deep mass temperature effects.

An improved motor vehicle automatic climate control methodology individually develops climate control commands in response to ambient environmental conditions and a transient state estimator, and individually and adaptively adjusts the commands to improve driver comfort in response to driver override of respective automatic control settings. The adaptive adjustment of the climate control commands is carried by CMAC neural networks that take into account the environmental conditions and the dynamic state of the system when the respective overrides occur so as to minimize or eliminate the environmental state ambiguity and steady-state/transient coupling that occur in currently known control methodologies.

An air distribution module for a vehicle heating, ventilation and air-conditioning system receives a layered air-flow of an upper and lower layer for delivery to a vehicle interior. The air distribution module includes a housing defining a central plenum and an air inlet at an upstream side thereof for receiving the layered air-flow of first and second layers. At least a first arcuate duct is coupled to the housing and defines an inner passage wherein the arcuate duct further includes an inlet coupled to a downstream side of the housing and in fluidic communication with the plenum. The duct further includes an inversion loop for inverting the air-flow layers and an outlet for discharging the air into the vehicle interior.

Vehicle heating ventilation and air-conditioning module for improved heating and defrosting performance

A reduced noise automotive ventilation system uses two blowers, a front mounted blower that pulls outside air in, and a rear mounted fan that exhausts interior air from the cabin space. By pulling and pushing in series, the speed of each blower is reduced, and the attendant blower noise is considerably reduced. In addition, a closed floor duct routes recirculated air from the rear to the front blower, eliminating the conventional open blower noise path to the vehicle interior in recirculation mode.

Dual film belt vehicle air conditioning system

An improved performance and cost-effective control for an automatic motor vehicle HVAC system in which the system variables are controlled without regard to a measured in-car temperature during steady-state conditions, and in which the steady-state control is modified during transient conditions by a time-dependent open-loop compensation term, INCAR. The initial value of INCAR, a target value and a time rate of change are initialized as a function of environmental and system conditions at the onset of the transient condition. At ignition key-on, INCAR is initialized in accordance with an estimate of the in-car temperature, and exponentially adjusted toward a predetermined reference temperature (target), such as 75&deg;, at a rate determined by the initial temperature, preferably with adjustments being made for door opening and closing. At ignition key-off, INCAR is initialized at its current value, and exponentially adjusted toward a target temperature based on ambient air temperature and solar loading, to form a basis for in-car temperature initialization at the next ignition key-on. For extended key-off periods, system temperature sensors may be used to initialize INCAR.
