In one embodiment, the present invention may be a method of forming a porous and/or dense article from metal powder (), including adding to a mold a first feedstock comprising an agglomerated metal powder () and an agglomeration agent, forming said first feedstock into a green state dense article (); and removing said agglomeration agent. Furthermore, the present invention may include a second feedstock including an agglomerated metal powder (), a space filling material and an agglomeration agent which may be formed into a green state porous article (). The present invention also includes a dense and/or porous article (and) manufactured by various methods, as well as methods for creating the dense and porous feedstocks. Moreover, the present invention may include an article which may be a medical implant.

Preparation of formed orthopedic articles

A method for manufacturing a titanium acetabular cup shell includes obtaining a titanium powder. A three part mold having a first part with a part-spherical inner surface, a second ram part with a part-spherical outer impact surface and a third ram part with an annular impact surface are provided to compact the titanium powder. The second and third parts are aligned along an axis within the first part. The second part is aligned along a center axis within the annular impact surface of the third part. The first mold part is filled with the titanium powder. The second mold part-spherical outer surface and the third part annular surface are moved towards the part-spherical inner surface of the first part into contact with the powder. The powder is compacted with the second part part-spherical outer impact surface and the third part annular impact surface to about 50% of its initial volume.

Multi-part axial powder compression mold for complex parts

A high strength hydrogel having a constant swelling pressure upon implantation and thereafter is formed by preparing a hydrogel solution and then injecting the solution into a mold and cause to gel. The molded gel is then washed in a saline solution from about one day to twelve weeks, after which the gel is irradiated for sterilization purposes, dehydrated and packaged. The pre-treatment with the use of a physiologic solution results in an implant which exhibits a constant swelling pressure profile after implantation.
