This invention relates to devices and instruments for implant insertion through a posterior lateral opening to the disc space. The instruments include an implant inserter, and the devices include a spinal fusion implant engageable by the implant inserter. The implant provides bilateral support of the adjacent vertebrae when inserted into the disc space from a postero-lateral approach.

Devices and techniques for a posterior lateral disc space approach

A vertebral replacement device for supporting adjacent vertebrae includes a vertebral body member having at least one of an upper or lower disc replacement member engaged thereto at one end thereof. The disc replacement device can be positioned in a spinal disc space when disengaged from the vertebral body member.

Vertebral body and disc space replacement devices

This invention relates to methods and instruments for performing a surgical procedure in a disc space between adjacent vertebrae. A cannula is inserted to create a working channel through the skin and tissue of a patient using a transformational approach to the disc space. A viewing element is used to visualize working end of the cannula and the disc space. A facetectomy is performed through the working channel to access the disc space. The disc space is prepared with various instruments, such as distractors, shims, chisels and distractor-cutters that extend through the working channel. At least implant is inserted into the disc space. The procedure allows bi-lateral support of the adjacent vertebrae with the at least one implant inserted via a unitary, minimally invasive approach to disc space.

Methods and instruments for endoscopic interbody surgical techniques

The surgical instrumentation system is adapted to provide an operative approach to the spinal column and maintain distraction of adjacent vertebrae. The system includes at least one retractor and a pair of opposite distractor mechanisms mounted to a frame. The distractor mechanisms each include an adjustment mechanism permitting the distractor mechanism to be pivoted relative to the vertebra and secured to the frame after being repositioned.

Distraction and retraction system for spinal surgery

Methods and instrumentation for spinal interbody fusion are disclosed. The instruments and methods are particularly adapted for interbody fusion in an unreamed disc space. One instrument is a distractor assembly including a first distractor and a second distractor configured to be inserted in side-by-side relation in the disc space. Fusion cages adapted for insertion into an unreamed disc space are provided to enhance load distribution between adjacent vertebral bodies and lateral stability of the spinal column. The fusion cages may be inserted after distracting the disc space with the distractor assembly. Instruments for preparing the disc space through the inserted fusion cages or for use with the distractor assembly are also provided.

Devices and methods for implanting fusion cages

An implant configured for placement through a transforaminal surgical approach made of at least two different materials. The implant may include materials with varying radiolucency and mechanical properties. Such a hybrid implant may offer controlled radiographic visibility and optimized structural properties for implant placement, including placement for use in spinal arthrodesis.

Insertion device and techniques for orthopaedic implants

This invention relates to methods and instruments for performing disc space preparation and implant insertion from a unilateral approach to the spine through a posterior lateral opening to the disc space. The instruments include spreaders, distractors, reamers, scrapers, cutters, chisels, rasps, pushers and implant inserters. A surgical procedure is provided that allows bilateral support of the adjacent vertebrae with at least one interbody fusion device inserted into the disc space via a unilateral approach. Implants for insertion into the disc space are also provided.

A vertebral implant for insertion into a patient includes first and second end members that include recesses for engaging a spacer member and a distractor. The end plates include a bone contact surface and an oppositely facing surface. A peripheral surface extends around a perimeter of the end members. The recesses may extend inward from the oppositely facing surfaces. Further, the recesses may extend inward from the peripheral surfaces. The recesses for engaging the spacer member and distractor may be separate from each other or may intersect one another. A spacer may engage the end plates to establish a desired vertebral spacing. The spacer may be positioned between the implants after a desired distraction is obtained with a distractor that engages the end plates.

Expandable vertebral body implants and methods of use

The present application discloses intervertebral implants and methods of using the implants. The implants may include inferior and superior surfaces, and a sidewall that together form the body of the implant. An inner chamber is formed between the surfaces and the sidewall. An opening extends through the body to access the inner chamber. A cover plate is sized to extend across the opening. The cover plate is adjustable between an open position to access the inner chamber, and a closed position to prevent the bone growth material from escaping from the inner chamber.

This invention relates to a porous bone implant (, and), a method of manufacturing the implant and a method of orthopedic treatment. The mesh implant can be manufactured using extrusion techniques and a variety of cutting and machining processes to provide the implant with the desired structural features and in the required dimensions to be matingly received within the bone defect or cavity. The implant can be used to strengthen bone structures and support bone tissue adjacent to a defect of cavity. Thus, the implant can be used to provide improved treatment of patients having bone defects or diseases with decreased postoperative pain and a shorter recovery time.
