A digital camera is disclosed for capturing digital images and organizing the captured images for subsequent transfer from the digital camera to an external device that utilizes the digital images. The digital camera includes a database having a plurality of customized profiles, wherein each customized profile contains a plurality of image utilization fields. A user selects one of the plurality of customized profiles from the database. The digital camera further includes a structure for defining a plurality of profile indices respectively corresponding to ones of the plurality of customized profiles, and an image sensor for capturing images. A profile index is associated with at least one captured image to identify the corresponding selected customized profile. The digital camera further includes a memory for receiving and storing the at least one captured image and the corresponding profile index.

Customizing digital image transfer

A method for customizing image transfer from a digital camera to a destination, the method includes (a) providing a digital camera, including (i) an image sensor for capturing images of a scene; (ii) an image memory for storing the captured images; (iii) a display for displaying the stored images and for displaying a graphical user interface; (iv) an interface to a host computer; (v) a firmware memory for storing camera firmware and for storing destination data, wherein the destination data identifies a transfer destination; and (vi) a processor, coupled to the image memory, firmware memory, display, and communications interface; (b) the processor displaying, on the display of the digital camera, a graphical user interface which permits a user to select a transfer destination, and (c) the processor storing destination data in the firmware memory to identify the transfer destination; and (d) providing image transfer software for the host computer, including (i) software code which detects that the interface of the digital camera has been connected to the host computer; (ii) software code which sends a request to the digital camera to transfer the destination data to the host computer; (iii) software code which sends a request to the digital camera to transfer at least one stored captured image to the host computer; and (iv) software code which uses the destination data to transfer the at least one stored captured image to the transfer destination.

A method for customizing a digital camera for at least one particular user is disclosed. The digital camera includes a reprogrammable memory for storing firmware which controls the operation of the digital camera and a camera graphical user interface responsive to the firmware stored in the reprogrammable memory. The method includes providing customization software executed external to the digital camera which can access a plurality of firmware components having different camera features. A user selects desired camera features to cause the customization software to access the corresponding firmware component(s). The selected corresponding firmware component(s) are provided to the digital camera and the reprogrammable memory is reprogrammed to store the corresponding firmware component(s) to thereby customize the digital camera.

A bar code reader particularly useful in a photographic film scanner of the type employing a light source and CCD array for sensing the bar code elements. Lateral location of the bar code pattern is established by analyzing the output of the CCD array within a bar code detection window to determine the location of a longitudinal edge transition of the line of clock elements in the bar code pattern and then to use clock and data element detection windows at spaced locations from the line of clock edge transition to read the encoded values of the bar code. In one embodiment, the line of transition between the clock and data elements is used as the line of longitudinal edge transition of the line of clock elements. In another embodiment, the longitudinal clock edge transition remote from the data elements and adjacent the central image frame region is used.
