Systems and methods for controlling a fluid-based system are disclosed. The systems and methods may include a model processor for generating a model output, the model processor including a set state module for setting dynamic states, the dynamic states input to an open loop model based on the model operating mode, where the open loop model generates current state derivatives, solver state errors, and synthesized parameters as a function of the dynamic states and a model input vector. A constraint on the current state derivatives and solver state errors is based on mathematical abstractions of physical laws that govern behavior of a component using a material temperature utility. The model processor may further include an estimate state module for determining an estimated state of the model based on at least one of a prior state, the current state derivatives, the solver state errors, and the synthesized parameters.

Systems and methods for controlling a fluid based engineering system are disclosed. The systems and methods may include a model processor for generating a model output, the model processor including a set state module for setting dynamic states of the model processor, the dynamic states input to an open loop model based on the model operating mode, wherein the open loop model generates a current state model as a function of the dynamic states and the model input, wherein a constraint on the current state model is based a series of cycle synthesis modules, each member of the series of cycle synthesis modules modeling a component of a cycle of the control system and including a series of utilities, the utilities are based on mathematical abstractions of physical properties associated with the component, the series of cycle synthesis modules including a rotary apparatus module which estimates a tip clearance between the rotor and the rotor case. The model processor may further include an estimate state module for determining an estimated state of the model based on a prior state model output and the current state model of the open loop model.

Systems and methods for controlling a fluid based system are disclosed. A system comprises a rotary apparatus, a control law and a processor. The rotary apparatus comprises a rotor and a housing forming a gas path therebetween, and the control law controls flow along the gas path. The processor comprises an output module, a plurality of temperature modules, a thermodynamic module, a comparator and an estimator. The output module generates an output signal as a function of a plurality of rotor and housing temperatures defined along the gas path, and the temperature modules determine time derivatives of the rotor and housing temperatures. The thermodynamic module models boundary conditions for the gas path, and the comparator determines errors in the boundary conditions. The estimator estimates the rotor and housing temperatures based on the time derivatives, such that the errors are minimized and the flow is controlled.

High fidelity integrated heat transfer and clearance in component-level dynamic turbine system control

A system and method of controlling clearance in a turbomachine includes adjusting the machine case cooling air in response to the difference between the desired clearance and the actual clearance. An accurate estimate of the actual clearance is made with a real time mathematical model on-board engine controller. The model computes thermal growth of the turbomachine components each with a difference equation derived from a closed form solution to the 1 order differential equation obtained through the application of 1 law of thermodynamics. The resulting equation is conveniently formulated in terms of equivalent time constant and steady state growth both correlated with thermo-physical characteristics of multiple fluid streams exchanging heat with the component. The solution is applied over a time step of the control software. Approximating coefficients are strategically placed in the model to allow calibration of the model to a particular version of the engine hardware.

System and method of controlling clearance between turbine engine blades and case based on engine components thermal growth model

The present invention is a brush seal for use between two components which move relative to each other. The brush seal has multiple layers of bristles, and the bristles within a particular layer have the same cross-sectional area or 'thickness'. The layers are arranged in the order of increasing thickness, with the bristles of the layer that forms the high pressure face of the brush seal having the smallest cross-sectional area. The larger bristles support the smaller bristles, and a backing plate supports the larger bristles.

The outer air seal of a gas turbine engine is continuously cooled by compressor discharge air (primary) and a by-pass line (secondary) which can be throttled or shut off, augments cooling during high power conditions and is throttled or shut off at reduced power conditions, allowing the casing scrubbed by fan discharged air to shrink and reduce the clearance of the tips of the turbine blades. The air from the continuous flow (primary) line is routed to the outer air seals in a manner to avoid scrubbing the engine case.
