A membrane for waterproofing a building component, e.g., a roof or a basement wall. The membrane includes a first layer of asphalt-elastomer blend which preferably is self-adherent to the building component and an overlying layer of plastic film which bears at least one adhesive strip adhered to the plastic film. The membrane is in the form of elongated strips which are overlapped to cover the building component, and the adhesive of each strip ensures a waterproof joint between the laminae of the overlapped strips.

A method of depositing a coiled member and, optionally, a membrane in a conduit in contact with the walls of the conduit involves placement of the coiled member in the conduit in a longitudinally expanded condition and releasing the force on the coiled member to cause it to contract and expand against the walls of the conduit.

A lofted mat of filaments is produced from process and apparatus including: supplying a plurality of streams of molten polymeric material; attenuating said streams of material into continous filaments through the action of a stream of fluid moving from an attenuation means; said filaments being entrained in said fluid moving from said attenuation means, said filaments having non-uniform residual stresses established therein; moving said stream of fluid and filaments along a first surface positioned intermediate said attenuation means and a foraminous surface; establishing a vacuum at said foraminous surface; directing said stream of fluid and filaments into said foraminous surface obliquely oriented with respect to said first surface such that a first portion of said fluid separates from the filaments and passes through said foraminous surface and a second portion of said fluid moves said filaments along the foraminous surface; collecting said filaments in a randomly dispersed, substantially uniform layer having a first thickness; passing said layer through crimp inducing means adapted to permit said unbalanced, residual stresses to randomly crimp said filaments to form said lofted mat having a second thickness greater than said first thickness.

Method for producing a lofted mat

Apparatus for fluidically attenuating streams of molten material into filaments is provided comprising; a base having a first chamber and a recess separated by a wall having a plurality of apertures therethrough, said first chamber being adapted to receive a fluid; a first member having a first arcuate surface and a distal end, the first member being adapted to be joined to said base such that first arcuate surface is adjacent said recess and said apertures of said base; a second member having a second arcuate surface, a head region, and a third arcuate surface, said head region being located intermediate and contiguous with said second and third arcuate surfaces, said second member being joined to said base such that said second arcuate surface is positioned adjacent said recess and said apertures of said base such that said first arcuate surface, said second arcuate surface and said head region form a smoothly converging passageway, the head region being positioned relative to the distal end to form an outlet through which said fluid is moved, said third arcuate surface being adapted to control the moving fluid issuing from said outlet, wherein the contraction ratio of the cross-sectional area of the inlet section to the cross-sectional area of the outlet section of the converging passageway is within the range of values from about 150 to about 750 to 1.

Apparatus for fluidically attenuating filaments

A lofted mat of filaments is produced from process and apparatus including: supplying a plurality of streams of molten polymeric material; attenuating said streams of material into continuous filaments through the action of a stream of fluid moving from an attenuation means; said filaments being entrained in said fluid moving from said attenuation means, said filaments having non-uniform residual stresses established therein; moving said stream of fluid and filaments along a first surface positioned intermediate said attenuation means and a foraminous surface; establishing a vacuum at said foraminous surface; directing said stream of fluid and filaments into said foraminous surface obliquely oriented with respect to said first surface such that a first portion of said fluid separates from the filaments and passes through said foraminous surface and a second portion of said fluid moves said filaments along the foraminous surface; collecting said filaments in a randomly dispersed, substantially uniform layer having a first thickness; passing said layer through crimp inducing means adapted to permit said unbalanced, residual stresses to randomly crimp said filaments to form said lofted mat having a second thickness greater than said first thickness wherein said lofted mat is comprised of a lofted mat comprising a plurality of continuous polymeric filaments having an asymmetrical cross-sectional shape, the cross-sectional shape having a major dimension within the range from about 0.00150 inch to about 0.00350 inch, the filaments having a crimp factor within the range from about 0.1 to about 4 waves per inch of filament, said mat having a density within the range from about 0.33 pounds per cubic foot to about 1.74 pounds per cubic foot.

Method and apparatus are provided for forming filaments comprising: means for supplying a plurality of streams of molten material; attenuation means for supplying of moving fluid to attenuate said streams into said filaments; said filaments being entrained in said fluid moving from said attenuation means; and means for separating said filaments entrained in said moving air comprising a foraminous surface having; (a) an intercept region oriented to form an acute angle between a path defined by the entrained filaments approaching said intercept region; and (b) a concave region contiguous with said intercept region oriented such that at least a portion of said concave region is positioned substantially transverse to said path such that a portion of said air passes through said foraminous surface and a portion of said air moves along said foraminous surface to move said filaments therealong.

Process and apparatus are provided for producing filaments comprising: supplying a plurality of streams of molten material; attenuating said streams of material into continuous filaments through the action of a stream of fluid moving from an attenuation means; said filaments being entrained in said fluid moving from said attenuation means, moving said stream of fluid and filaments along a first surface positioned intermediate said attenuation means and a foraminous surface; establishing a vacuum at said foraminous surface; directing said stream of fluid and filaments into said foraminous surface obliquely oriented with respect to said first surface such that a first portion of said fluid separates from the filaments and passes through said foraminous surface and a second portion of said fluid moves said filaments along the foraminous surface; collecting said filaments.

Apparatus for producing filaments

The production of organic fibers with inorganic cores is set forth. Inorganic, such as glass, fibers are attenuated from a bushing and then covered individually or in small groups with organic sheaths. With individual fibers, rows or orifices in a bottom of the bushing are staggered so as to equally space the filaments. The applicator for applying the organic sheaths has one groove for each of the individual fibers for applying the organic material and for maintaining the fibers separated therebelow. The applicator can be mounted in a manner such that it can be retracted from an operating position in engagement with the filaments when the bushing operation is stopped, raised to a position near the bushing bottom, and moved into engagement with the fibers again to automatically place one fiber in each groove when the bushing is restarted. The applicator is then moved down to the operating position again when the bushing is back in normal operation. An oven is located below the applicator for curing the organic sheaths before the fibers are brought together. The oven is mounted on tracks and has a side slot to enable the oven to be moved from a position to one side of the fibers to a position in which the fibers are surrounded. A gathering wheel below the oven collects composite fibers and applies a size to them; the composite fibers are then wound on a collet or other suitable means. For increased production, two bushings and two of the special applicators can be employed.

Production of organic fibers with inorganic cores

A coating material applicator is provided which applies a coating material to fibers, more specifically filaments, in a uniform manner. The applicator, which has no moving parts, directs the coating material in a tortuous path from a supply inlet to a filament-coating bar which applies the coating material to the filaments passing thereby. The tortuous path preferably has at least one inverted U-shaped portion which helps separate air trapped in the coating material. The applicator preferably has at least three chambers with the coating material passing down through the first chamber, up through the second, and down through the third from which it exits to the coating bar. Fibrous material can be located in the first chamber, and also in the second, if desired, to help separate and collect the air from the coating material. A vent also can be located in the first chamber and in the second, too, particularly if that chamber also has fibrous material therein, to vent the air periodically.
