A transgenic, non-human mammalian animal is capable of expressing a heterologous gene for human or other recombinant physiologically functional fibrinogen holoprotein or individual subunit chain polypeptides thereof or a modified or fusion fibrinogen in mammary glands of the animals and secreting the expressed product into a body fluid. Methodology employing such a mammal yields recombinant physiologically functional fibrinogens, subunit chain polypeptides thereof, and modified or fusion fibrinogens.

Recombinant Factor IX characterized by a high percentage of active protein can be obtained in the milk of transgenic animals that incorporate chimeric DNA molecules according to the present invention. Transgenic animals of the present invention are produced by introducing into developing embryos DNA that encodes Factor IX, such that the foreign DNA is stably incorporated in the DNA of germ line cells of the mature animal. Particularly efficient expression was accomplished using a chimeric construct comprising a mammary gland specific promoter, Factor IX cDNA that lacked the complete or any portion of the 5&prime;-untranslated and 3&prime;-untranslated region, which is substituted with a 5&prime;- and 3&prime;-end of the mouse whey acidic protein gene. In vitro cell cultures of cells explanted from the transgenic mammal of the invention and methods of producing Factor IX from such said culture and methods of treating hemophilia B are also described.

Expression of active human factor IX in mammary tissue and of milk non human transgenic mammals

Recombinant protein C characterized by a high percentage of active protein can be obtained in the milk of transgenic mammals that incorporate DNAs according to the present invention. Transgenic mammals of the present invention are produced by introducing into developing embryos DNA that encodes protein C, such that the DNA is stably incorporated in the DNA of germ line cells of the mature mammals and inherited in normal, mendelian fashion.

The present invention provides a method of obtaining an organism which has been characterized as having cells containing exogenous genetic material which includes any sequence of DNA that can be distinguished as exogenous by known molecular biological analysis by insertion of genetic material into an animal's genetic makeup. The insertion of the genetic material is done by inserting DNA that has been complexed with molecules that allow the DNA to be inserted into the chromosomes when injected into the cytoplasm, perivitelline space, or placed in surrounding culture media to be taken up and incorporated into the genome. When the DNA is complexed into the polyelectrolyte molecules by electrostatic attraction, the electric charge of DNA of the complex is partially to substantially neutralized. The present method does not require the genetic material to be introduced into the embryo at a particular stage in development.

A pallet dismantling tool having a body member, a handle, and lever extensions. The handle is mounted on the body member in angular relation to the lever extensions for forming leveraged functioning of the latter to pry off pallet deck boards when the handle is operated to rotate the body member. In one embodiment, a plurality of jaw members comprise the lever extensions and have forwardly opening slots that receive a deck board of a pallet edgewise. The jaw members are selectively arranged in number and position corresponding to that of the pallet spacers when engaging a deck board whereby to remove a deck board simultaneously from all the spacers. The jaw members are adjustable to accommodate different structures and sizes of pallets.

Tool for manually dismantling pallets

A cutter head assembly for dismantling pallets includes a cross member pivotally supported on a machine. The cross member supports one or more cutter heads thereon in forwardly projecting operational position which is freely slidable in a lateral direction. The cutter heads have an offbearing tray for portions of the pallets. The assembly of cutter heads is tiltable rearwardly on the pivot support to an upper maintenance position. Lock pins hold the cutter head assembly positively between the down operational position and the up maintenance position. The center of gravity of the cutter head assembly is at the pivot support to provide a balanced structure, and a spring loaded member is provided to urge the assembly rotatably down to its operational position. The spring loaded member also maintains the cutter head assembly in its maintenance position. A positive lock is provided between the cutter head assembly and the machine frame in both of these positions.

A base mount supports a secondary mount in surface facing relation and a pair of these mount assemblies are positioned in spaced relation to receive a pallet stringer between them. The mounts support circular cutter discs which are disposed in axially aligned pairs and also in laterally aligned pairs whereby to be capable of severing nails on opposite edges of a stringer in a single pass of a stringer through the space between the laterally spaced mounts. The base mounts support the secondary mounts and are capable of being retrofitted to existing machines. The base and secondary mounts are secured by cross plates that have a cutting edge to form a backup cutter for the cutter discs. The secondary mounts are hingedly supported on the base mounts by a cross hinge at the rear of the mounts and a spring and limit assembly is provided between the mounts to allow adjustment of the mounts for different dimensioned stringers. The cutter discs are supported on the mounts by bearings that provide lateral adjustment of the cutter discs. The bearings are compact in their structure and compactly positioned in the mounts for ruggedness and long life.

An improved self-propelled grain harvester and thrashing machine characterized by an improved thrashing assembly exhibiting on-the-go adjustment capabilities which allows upper and lower cone thrashing units to be moved toward or away from one another thereby contracting or expanding the spacing therebetween defining the thrashing or rubbing area. The machine also includes collection and storage containers, and separate means for discharging the thrashed wheat, as well as the chaff.
