The present invention relates generally to an engine control system, and more particularly to an engine control system that decreases the amount of waste oil that must be disposed of in an internal combustion engine by automatically burning spent oil based upon engine speed.

An on/off compression braking system is provided which when actuated controllably opens one inlet valve and one outlet valve in response to the actuation of the injector unit rocker arm and deactivates the exhaust valve rocker arm. This braking system thereby is useful on four cycle engines and is of a construction which eliminates elements of heretofore utilized compression braking systems and provides a four cycle engine with a two cycle compression braking system.

A compression braking system is provided which controllably opens one inlet valve and one outlet valve in response to the actuation of the injector unit rocker arm. This braking system thereby is useful on four cycle engines and is of a construction which eliminates elements of heretofore utilized compression braking systems.

The design of past vehicles having internal combustion engines has focused attention toward aerodynamic principles. However, present day vehicles have done little to reconfigure the vehicle's engine systems in order to enhance the aerodynamics of the vehicle. The present invention allows for enhancements of the aerodynamics of the vehicle by utilizing a dry sump means 60 within a dry sump lubricated engine 36 which eliminates a conventional oil pan and allows a replacing cover 46 to be smaller and more shallow thereby lowering the overall profile of the engine 36. The additional use of a separately mounted oil cooler 76 reduces the heat load to a radiator 80 thereby decreasing the necessary size for the radiator 80. The smaller radiator 80 decreases the vertical spatial requirements for the engine 36. By lowering the overall profile of the engine 36, with both the more shallow cover 46 and the smaller radiator 80, a vehicle hood 18 can be manufactured with an increased slope. The increased slope of the vehicle's hood 18 enhances the aerodynamics of the vehicle 12 by reducing air drag.

Air compression systems for internal combustion engines are utilizing an integral part of the engine to produce the compressed air necessary for operating the brakes of a vehicle. The ability to produce compressed air from an integral part of the engine is important in order to reduce the cost and weight associated with the engine and to increase performance capability and reliability. The integral air compression system includes a valve means associated with one of a plurality of combustion chambers. A housing is connected to a cylinder head and has first and second bore. A master piston is disposed within the first bore to define a first oil chamber. A slave piston is disposed within the second bore to define a second oil chamber. A means fluidly connects the first and second oil chambers. The master piston is forced toward the first oil chamber when another one of the combustion chambers is in the exhaust stroke. The second oil chamber becomes pressurized and forces the slave piston to open the valve means during the compression stroke of the one combustion chamber allowing compressed air to flow through a passage in the head and into a storing means. A means for monitoring the pressure in the storing means is utilized to control the integral air compression system.

Fumes disposal systems used with existing engines are complex, induce pollution and cause engine malfunction to occur. The present fumes disposal system overcomes these problems by utilizing the heat from the engine exhaust to heat a tubular member and cause excessive oil droplets, carbon particles and fumes to burn. The flow of exhaust from the engine is used to dissipate the remaining crankcase fumes insuring that any concentration of fumes are purged with the exhaust. Furthermore, the system controls the pressure within the crankcase of the engine.

A reciprocating engine including a block having at least one cylinder therein, a piston reciprocally received in the cylinder and having a crown, a depending skirt and a ring-receiving groove on the skirt near the crown. The piston has a central cavity terminating near the crown and a coolant-receiving passage in heat exchange relationship to the groove. A nozzle is stationarily mounted on the engine and has first and second jets, the first jet directing coolant to the cavity and the second jet directing coolant to the coolant-receiving passage, both for all operating positions of the piston within the cylinder. A filtered oil supply for the nozzle is provided.
