This invention provides means to replace vulcanized natural rubber with non-allergenic synthetic rubbers in the manufacture of health care devices such as protective gloves, condoms, tourniquets and dental dams. The synthetic rubbers are latexes and aqueous polyurethane dispersions having very low glass transition temperatures and crosslinked by means other than sulfur vulcanization of double bonds.

A high solids coating composition suitable for use, for example, as a high performance automotive coating is provided, which comprises (1) a particular polyurethane polyol which is the reaction product of an asymmetric diol component and an isocyanate component, and (2) an hydroxyl groups-reactive crosslinking agent. When formulated as a one-pack coating preferably with an aminoplast crosslinking agent, these coating compositions possess a number of desirable properties including excellent acid etch resistance.

Acid etch resistant coatings containing polyurethane polyols

A polyurethane polyol is provided, which is the reaction product of a particular isocyanate component and a particular diol component in a specified ratio, which polyol component is selected from substantially monomeric diols wherein the hydroxyl groups are separated by 3 carbon atoms or less. Such polyurethane polyols possess a desirable spectrum of molecular weight properties, making them especially suitable for use in formulating high solids, high performance coatings.

Protective and decorative coatings for metal are prepared using aqueous polymer compositions consisting essentially of a thermosetting vinyl or acrylic polymer which has been polymerized in the presence of a preformed, crosslinked, elastomeric copolymer. The rate at which the monomers of the thermosetting polymer are added to the reaction mixture is substantially equal to the rate of reaction of these monomers to form the thermosetting polymer. This is believed to result in the formation of minute emulsified particles containing a core of the elastomeric copolymer surrounded by a layer of the thermosetting polymer. The thermosetting polymer contains pendant hydroxyl groups and a latent, heat-activated crosslinking agent.

The heretofore unattainable objective of a light-curable, substantially solventless coating composition containing sufficient pigment to obtain acceptable levels of hiding power is achieved by the presence of the carboxylic acid anhydride.
