A method of controlling a vehicle telematics unit includes placing the vehicle telematics unit in a data mode while camped on a base station that does not use a simultaneous voice and data (SVD) cellular standard; sensing an amount of time that has passed since the vehicle telematics unit last received a request for data while in the data mode; comparing the sensed amount of time with a predetermined threshold using the vehicle telematics unit; and commanding the vehicle telematics unit to maintain the data mode and also to enter a voice mode when the sensed amount of time exceeds the predetermined threshold.

Opportunistic data connectivity

The disclosed examples illustrate a system and method that prevent excessive current drain through the network access device (NAD) of a telematics unit and provide flexible discontinuous-receive management. Normally, when in a Standby State and where communication service is unavailable, the NAD may dissipate current at rate many times more than where communication service is available. A Standby Counter provides the length of the time interval for Standby State or the sleep cycle. Certain of the disclosed examples prevent excessive vehicle battery drain by operating the telematics unit in a first mode wherein a sleep cycle value of the telematics unit is above a first predetermined threshold, and if the communication service is available, operating the telematics unit in a second mode wherein a sleep cycle value is in a range from zero to the first predetermined threshold.

Method to prevent excessive current drain of telematics unit network access device

The invention provides a method for inband emergency notification for voice calls by multiplexing at least one emergency signal within an audible data stream and transmitting the audible data stream from a telematic communication unit to a mobile vehicle communication system. The mobile vehicle communication system decodes the emergency signal from the audible data stream and provides an emergency service as a function of the emergency signal.

A method and system for verifying an embedded module of a mobile vehicle. The method includes the steps of providing a validation test plan including a plurality of test keywords indexed to a requirement in a spread sheet format, receiving a validation test plan request including at least one requirement, determining the test keywords of the validation test plan based on the requirement according to a test keyword definition, and sending the test keywords from a call center to the embedded module based on correspondence between the requirement and test keywords. A computer usable medium with suitable computer program code is employed for verifying an embedded module of a mobile vehicle.
