A hard disk drive includes an enclosure housing a first set of magnetic recording media coupled to a first spindle motor, a second set of magnetic recording media coupled to a second spindle motor, and a third set of magnetic recording media coupled to a third spindle motor. The first set of magnetic recording media at least partially overlaps with the second set of magnetic recording media and the third set of magnetic recording media.

Provided herein is a magnetic write head including a near field transducer and a magnetic recording media including a media lubricant. The media lubricant includes a first portion and a second portion. The second portion of the media lubricant is evaporated in response to heat emitted from the near field transducer. The second portion of the media lubricant that is evaporated removes a contaminant over the near field transducer.

A multi-stage sensor is situated on the head transducer and configured to interact with a magnetic recording medium. A first sensor stage of the multi-stage sensor has a temperature coefficient of resistance. A second sensor stage of the multi-stage sensor is coupled to the first sensor and has a temperature coefficient of resistance. The first sensor stage is configured to preferentially sense asperities of the media relative to the second sensor stage, and the second sensor stage configured to preferentially sense proximity to, and contact with, a surface of the media relative to the first sensor stage. The first and second sensor stages may be connected in series or in parallel.

An aspect of the disclosure relates to data storage heater systems with diodes. In one embodiment, data storage systems include a first electrical connection point, a second electrical connection point, a first electrical branch, and a second electrical branch. The first electrical branch is connected to the first and the second electrical connection points. The first electrical branch has first and second diodes biased in a first direction. The second electrical branch is connected to the first and second electrical connection points. The second electrical branch has third and fourth diodes biased in a second direction.

Recording heads for a data storage system include a first diode, a second diode, and a first electrical component. The first electrical component is electrically connected in series to the first and second diodes. In another embodiment, recording heads include first, second, third, and fourth electrical connection points. A read transducer is electrically connected to the first and second electrical connection points. A write transducer is electrically connected to the first and third electrical connection points. A first heater and a second heater are electrically connected to the first and fourth electrical connection points.

An apparatus includes a slider body having a leading edge and an opposite trailing edge, as well as a top face and a bottom face each extending between the leading edge and the trailing edge. The slider body further includes a plurality of protrusions extending from the bottom face, a first recess defined on one of the protrusions, and a sacrificial layer deposited on the slider body in the recess. A bottom surface of the sacrificial layer extends at least as far from the bottom face as bottom surfaces of the plurality of protrusions. In another aspect, a first blocking feature is located at a first uptrack edge on an air bearing surface of a slider, with the first blocking feature being substantially continuous along the first uptrack edge and protruding outwardly from the air bearing surface to reduce particle interaction with the air bearing surface.

Recording heads for a data storage system include a first side having at least a portion of a metal component. A carbon overcoat is on the first side and covers the at least a portion of a metal component. A corrosion inhibitor is incorporated in the carbon overcoat. The corrosion inhibitor is illustratively located between the carbon overcoat and the at least a portion of a metal component, on top of the carbon overcoat, or within the carbon overcoat. In an embodiment, the carbon overcoat includes diamond-like carbon.

A method is disclosed for producing sliders with protective contacts features the fabrication of which is initiated at the wafer level. Recesses are formed in the wafer, a protective material is provided in the recesses, and the wafer is sliced along the recesses and diced into sliders, such that the protective material forms corners of the sliders. The protective material may be disposed such that it has a low elastic modulus at the corners, and a higher elastic modulus at a displacement from the corners which is still lower than the elastic modulus of the slider body, thereby providing superior protection for potential contacts between the slider and an adjacent media surface.

A data recording component includes a read transducer and a write transducer. A thermoelectric device generates heat flow between the read transducer and the write transducer. The heat flow is conducted by thermal conductors. A controlled current source provides current to the thermoelectric device that changes polarity to change directions of the heat flow and thereby vary a gamma ratio of transducer protrusion.

A head with a heating element and control regime therefor is disclosed. In embodiments described, the control regime or controller energizes the heater or heating element to provide intermittent heating between read or write operations to optimize transducer temperature and operating characteristics or parameters of a data storage device. In particular, in one embodiment described, the controller provides a low amplitude signal or current to provide low grade thermal heating. In another embodiment, the controller provides a high amplitude signal or current to preheat the transducer portion for write operations.
