A blower unit which, in one embodiment, includes an elongate main mounting member, a stator, a fan subassembly, and a blower housing, is described. In the one embodiment, the elongate main mounting member is the main structural member of the unit. The stator includes a stator core and stator windings, and the stator is secured to the main mounting member. The fan subassembly includes a rotor and a plurality of vanes. The rotor includes a substantially cylindrical iron ring and a magnetic portion having a substantially cylindrical shape. The magnetic portion is secured within the inner diameter of the iron ring and defines a rotor bore. The stator is located in the rotor bore and is concentric with respect to the rotor. The rotor is coupled to the plurality of vanes so that the vanes rotate with the rotor. The fan subassembly also includes bearing assemblies which are spring biased toward, and into rotatable engagement with, the elongate main mounting member. The fan assembly further includes a shroud for partially enclosing the plurality of vanes.

Integrated motor and blower apparatus

An oven for heating a crystal for nonlinear frequency conversion of a laser beam. A grasping device resiliently grasps together the first and second sides of the crystal while allowing for generally unrestricted thermal expansion of the crystal. A heater element and a temperature sensor are each supported by the grasping device and are each in thermal contact with the crystal. A temperature controller is connected to the heater element and the temperature sensor.

An exemplary laser apparatus comprises an amplification medium which amplifies a coherent beam passing through the amplification medium, a pump which provides energy to the amplification medium, a tunnel having a first end proximate to the pump and a second end proximate to the amplification medium, wherein the energy provided by the pump passes through the tunnel en route to the amplification medium, and a moveable member for adjusting a spatial distribution of the energy provided to the amplification medium by the pump. The moveable member typically comprises a flat, reflecting strip or flap which redirects a portion of the energy of the pump beam to a peripheral region of the amplification medium. The angular and translational position of the flap is adjustable on line so that the pump distribution can be adjusted while the laser is running to reduce observed optical distortions caused by heating of the amplification medium.

A blower unit includes an elongate main mounting member, a stator, a fan subassembly, and a blower housing. The elongate main mounting member is the main structural member of the unit. The stator includes a stator core and stator windings, and the stator is secured to the main mounting member. The fan subassembly includes a rotor and a plurality of vanes. The rotor includes a substantially cylindrical iron ring and a magnetic portion having a substantially cylindrical shape. The magnetic portion is secured within the inner diameter of the iron ring and defines a rotor bore. The stator is located in the rotor bore and is concentric with respect to the rotor. The rotor is coupled to the plurality of vanes so that the vanes rotate with the rotor. The fan subassembly also includes bearing assemblies which are spring biased towards, and into rotatable engagement with, the elongate main mounting member. The fan subassembly further includes a shroud for partially enclosing the plurality of vanes.

A laser head includes a body having opposite ends, and a bore extending axially therethrough for defining a reflector. The body is a unitary member circumferentially around the reflector. The reflector includes a center cavity for coaxially receiving a laser rod, and a plurality of lateral cavities disposed parallel to and extending radially outwardly from the center cavity for receiving flashlamps for optically pumping the laser rod. Reflector and lamp endcaps are removably mounted to the body for mounting the lamps and rod, and allowing individual replacement thereof.

A slab module for a face-pumped laser includes a box frame having top and bottom walls and opposite end walls defining a central slab chamber therein. The end walls have central access holes for receiving opposite ends of a laser slab positionable in the slab chamber. The frame also includes opposite side pockets which join with the slab chamber. The pockets are configured for receiving laser pumping modules for pumping the laser slab, with the modules including diode laser arrays in an exemplary embodiment.

A modular slab assembly for a face-pumped laser includes a slab module having top and bottom reflector segments, with first and second inner end caps joined thereto. A plurality of alignment keys are disposed between the inner end caps and the reflector segments for maintaining alignment therebetween, with the inner end caps being removably fastened to the reflector segments. The inner end caps have central apertures for supporting a slab tube, with a laser slab being disposed through the tube and supported at its ends by outer end caps removably fixedly joined to respective ones of the inner end caps. A pair of removable lamp modules are disposed on opposite sides of the slab module and contain lamps for exciting the laser slab.

Mechanical apparatus and method for positioning an optical fiber for injection with a laser beam is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a mechanical seat which is positioned to abut a first optical fiber which has been aligned by an optical alignment technique. Upon the need to replace the first fiber, the apparatus enables positioning of the mechanical seat at the same location so that a second fiber can be aligned in the same position as the first fiber without the need to employ an optical alignment technique.

Apparatus and method for optical fiber end positioning for laser

A system for directing successive beam pulses of a pulsed laser into different optical fibers, for transmission therethrough, is disclosed. The system comprises at least one lens, a plurality of optical fibers with the tips thereof positioned proximate a focal point of the lens, and at least one galvanometer driven mirror for directing a laser beam through the lens for focusing separately onto each fiber tip. The galvanometer, driven by computer generated position addresses, moves the mirror, between laser pulses, to predetermined positions each effective to direct the laser beam, through the lens, into one of the fiber tips for transmission via the fiber to a remote workstation location. In a first illustrated embodiment, a single mirror is mounted to direct the laser beam into fiber tips positioned substantially in the same plane and proximate the focal points of eight lenses. In a second illustrated embodiment, two mirrors are respectively mounted to scan the laser beam along 'x' and 'y' coordinate directions to direct the laser beam into fiber tip positioned proximate the respective focal points of four lenses.

An optical fiber holder includes a pair of flat, adjacent surfaces. Each of the surfaces includes a straight groove, the grooves opposing so as to form a passage shaped to engage an optical fiber in a snug fit. Means are provided for fastening the two surfaces together. The optical fiber holder is preferably constructed of material transparent to a laser beam at a predetermined wavelength, thereby making the optical fiber holder particularly adapted for use with a laser device generating such a laser beam.

A system for injecting successive beam pulses of a pulsed power laser into optical fibers, for transmission therethrough, is disclosed. The system comprises four lens, four fiber groups with the tips thereof respectively proximate the focal points of the lenses, two galvanometer driven mirrors for directing the laser beam through one of the lenses for focusing onto a selected fiber tip, and control means to drive the galvanometers to reorient the two mirrors between laser beam pulses into successive pairs of predetermined positions effective to inject the successive beam pulses into selected fibers. Failure to reorient the mirrors before the succeeding beam pulse arrives results in laser shutdown. Means are provided for detecting a malfunction of the mirrors, fracture of a lens or a missed fiber injection and, in either case, shutting down the laser.
