A lubricating composition includes an oil of lubricating viscosity and a low-ash additive system including a low molecular weight amine with a Total Base Number of at least 150, and an N-substituted hydrocarbyl-substituted succinimide dispersant. The low-ash additive system provides the lubricating composition with a significant boost in TBN without substantially lowering the flashpoint. The composition is particularly suited to use as a marine diesel engine lubricant.

Total base number boosters for marine diesel engine lubricating compositions

A lubricating composition suited to use in a marine diesel engine includes an oil of lubricating viscosity and an amino carboxylate compound of formula (I): NRR&#x2014;((CHR)NR)&#x2014;(CHR)&#x2014;COY, where Rand Rare independently selected from &#x2014;(CHR)&#x2014;COY', H, and CCalkyl and wherein at least one of Rand Ris &#x2014;(CHR)&#x2014;COY&#x2032;; or wherein NRRis a cyclic structure; Y and Y&#x2032; are independently selected from &#x2014;OR, NHR, and &#x2014;N(R); each Ris independently selected from C-Calkyl and C-Calkenyl; R, Rand Rare independently selected from H and C-Calkyl; Ris selected from H, C-Calkyl, and (CHR)NH; x is from 2 to 4; and n is at least 1, except where NRRis a cyclic structure, where n is at least 0.

Michael adduct amino esters as total base number boosters for marine diesel engine lubricating compositions

A composition of an oil-soluble ionic detergent that does not contribute metal ions to the composition, and which comprises a quaternary non-metallic pnictogen cation and an organic anion having at least one hydrocarbyl group of sufficient length to impart oil solubility to the detergent, the detergent having a total base number (TBN) to total acid number (TAN) ratio of at least 2:1 imparts ash-free basicity to a lubricant composition.

Ashless or reduced ash quaternary detergents

A lubricating composition includes an oil of lubricating viscosity and an ionic tetrahedral borate compound which includes a cation and a tetrahedral borate anion which includes a boron atom, the boron atom having at least one aromatic bidentate di-oxo ligand. The compound may be represented by formula (I), where Rand Rare selected from Chydrocarbyl groups or together form a substituted or unsubstituted 5- or 6-membered ring; Rand Rtogether represent a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic ring; m is 0 or 1; X is hydrogen, a Chydrocarbyl group, &#x2014;OR, &#x2014;NHR, or &#x2550;O, Ris a Chydrocarbyl group; M represents the cation; and n is at least 1. The cation may be selected to provide detergent and/or dispersant properties to the lubricating composition. In the case of ammonium cations, the molecular weight may be 260 g/mol or higher for providing a highly soluble compound, particularly when X is &#x2550;O. 

Aromatic tetrahedral borate compounds for lubricating compositions

A lubricating composition comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity, 1 to 1000 parts per million by weight of titanium in the form of an oil-soluble titanium-containing material, and at least one additional lubricant additive provides beneficial effects on properties such as deposit control, oxidation, and filterability in engine oils.

Titanium and molybdenum compounds and complexes as additives in lubricants

The invention provides an oil of lubricating viscosity, a dispersant and an amine-functionalized additive, wherein the amine-functionalized additive is derived from an amine having at least 3 or 4 aromatic groups. The invention further relates to the use of the lubricating composition in an internal combustion engine.

Lubricating compositions containing a carboxylic functionalised polymer and dispersant

The disclosed technology relates to a dispersant composition comprising the reaction product of a polyolefin acylating agent and an amine terminated or hydroxyl terminated polyether. In accordance with the present invention, it has been discovered that an additive which is substantially insoluble in, has low solubility in and/or is otherwise incompatible with a functional fluid, may be supplied to the functional fluid by use of a gel composition and/or a solid additive composition containing the additive, such that the functional fluid can receive the benefit of the supplied additive and/or contain levels of the additive not otherwise achievable by conventional delivery method due to the incompatibility of the additive with the functional fluid.

A lubricant composition, comprising an oil of lubricating viscosity, a dispersant comprising the condensation product of a carboxylic-functionalized polymer with an aromatic moiety through an amide, imide, or ester linkage, and an oil-soluble titanium compound, exhibits good oxidative stability.
