An exemplary method of facilitating hand-offs between Femtocells includes receiving an indication of a cell identifying code detected by a mobile station currently communicating with a serving Femtocell. A determination is made whether the received cell identifying code corresponds to a known Femtocell. The known Femtocell becomes a target Femtocell if a successful hand-off was previously made from the serving Femtocell to the known Femtocell. A hand-off is instigated to the target Femtocell.

Example embodiments provide a method and/or network element capable of mitigating one or more effects of operating at full capacity. According to an example embodiment, a network element may address load capacity by identifying that a first network element (e.g., a femto) is operating at a threshold capacity. If a communication from a second network element intended for the first network element is received, an operation is performed that informs the second network element of at least one of (i) that the first network element is operating at a threshold capacity and (ii) that the communication cannot be delivered to the first network element while the first network element is operating at a threshold capacity.

A method for hand-off of a CDMA access mobile from a macrocell to a femtocell is disclosed. The method includes tracking each femtocell which mobile stations have allowed access incorporating a mobile station identification for each of the mobile stations. The method continues with storing the mobile station identification for each femtocell. This may occur in a database or similar structure. The message continues on with requesting a hand-off from the macrocell to the femtocell via PN offset and the method concludes with querying all femtocells that have that PN offset that are within range of the macrocell's neighbor list. If only one femtocell fits that criteria the method is done. If more than one femtocell fits that criteria, a priority list may be set up based at least in part on the number of times and/or frequency that the mobile station has been allowed access on the femtocell. The method could include allocating resources for all high priority femtocells and cleaning up resources for the femtocells that do not send a hand-off complete message.

Method and apparatus to allow hand-off from a macrocell to a femtocell

A method and apparatus are provided to allow a mobile communications device to identify and store the locations of femtocells which are not contained on a preferred femtocell list of the mobile communications device. Upon identifying a specific femtocell, an authorized mobile communications device may register with the specific femtocell to initiate and receive calls. Moreover, each broadcast message comprises at least one occurrence for each available carrier. Disclosed is a method for utilizing SCH resources more efficiently for supplemental channels (SCH) by minimizing gaps between data bursts due to overhead delays. Such gaps are minimized using a supplemental channel sharing algorithm to prospectively assign SCH resources supporting existing SCHs and to schedule future issuance of DNRs such that currently unavailable SCH resources may be prospectively assigned based on states of the SCH resources, wherein an existing SCH is a SCH over which a data burst is currently being transmitted.

A method of allocating CDMA codes from a set of the same is provided for use in connection with a wireless network. The method includes, after identifying a desired size of the code to be allocated, determining if there exists a code of the desired size whose sibling is unavailable. If such a code is found, then it is allocated. Otherwise, it is determined if there exists a code of smaller than the desired size whose sibling is unavailable. When such a code (i.e., a code of smaller than the desired size whose sibling is unavailable) is found, a descendant thereof which has the desired size is allocated.

Walsh code allocation/de-allocation system

Multiple carriers are used to provide access to a wireless communication system. A first carrier transmits synchronization messages in accordance with the IS-95B standard (communication protocol revision 5). The synchronization message directs mobiles attempting to access the network to a paging channel on the first carrier. The paging channel enables mobiles conforming to a standard of IS-2000 revision 0 or older to access the wireless network. The paging channel also includes an extended global service redirection message (EGSRM) that instructs mobiles conforming to the IS-2000 revision A standard (communication protocol revision 7) to use a synchronization channel on a second carrier for reception of an IS-2000 revision A synchronization message. The IS-2000 revision A (communication protocol revision 7) synchronization message instructs the mobile to access the wireless communication network using a BCCH and/or FCCCH on the second carrier, or using a BCCH and/or FCCCH on the first carrier.

Multi-carrier method for providing access to a wireless communication system

A method and apparatus for transmitting a burst of data over a supplemental channel on just one leg of a handoff by changing the maximum allowed burst duration of the data to be transmitted over the supplemental channel as a function of the future and/or current characteristics of the communication link of the leg(s) of the handoff. The data is then transmitted over just one leg of handoff using the maximum allowed burst duration. By changing the parameters of the data, the data may still be acceptably received at the mobile terminal over just one leg of the soft handoff even when the strength of the pilot signal used for the supplemental channel changes significantly. In an illustrative embodiment of the invention the stability of the communication link is used as a way of ascertaining the future conditions of the communications link.

Data transmission in a wireless communication system

The present invention, in illustrative embodiments, implements systems and methods for adjusting the timing of access requests in mobile communications systems, such as IS-95-A mobile telephone systems, to reduce the likelihood of request collisions&mdash;especially during periods of very high calling rates. These embodiments employ measurements of access channel occupancy, as well as system operator inputs, to develop thresholds and parameter translations at a base station. Execution of control algorithms at a base station advantageously yields modified persistence test parameters sent to mobile stations. When overload conditions are present, these modified parameters cause the mobile stations to experience variable delays through judicious control of persistence testing at the mobile stations.
