A carrying case for a personal computer card may include an integral antenna. The carrying case may be secured onto a laptop computer so that the antenna extends above the laptop computer. The case may include a pair of hingedly connected portions, one of which may extend along the screen of the laptop computer and the other which may extend above the laptop computer while the case is secured to the upper edge of the laptop computer display screen. A cable may extend from the antenna within the case down to a personal computer card plugged into the computer.

Briefly, a method and apparatus for decoding and authenticating an antenna is disclosed. The method may include detecting attachment of an antenna to a transmitter by authenticating a cipher received from the antenna. The method further includes suspending transmission if the antenna is not attached to the transmitter.

A system is disclosed having a remote access unit and two transceiver modes, one for implementing wireless wide area network communications and another for implementing local wireless network communications. High speed data communications with a cellular system may be maintained in the wireless wide area network mode with the advantage of a flexible and unconstrained remote access unit, which can be placed for improved wireless reception. Computers and other devices with complementary wireless personal network communications protocol units may connect to a wireless wide area network through the remote access unit.

A RF signal repeater system is added to a wireless communications network which increases user data rates at the periphery of the cellular coverage area by boosting the downlink (base station to mobile user) signal and uplink (mobile user to base station) signal. The RF signal repeater system includes a signal tagging means that adds a unique electronic signature to the repeated signal such that position determination errors due to a non-line of sight propagation path can be corrected. The repeated signal is received and processed with a location measurement unit to determine the time of arrival and to extract the signal tag of the repeated signal. The time of arrival measurement and recovered signal tag are then processed at a mobile location center to determine the true position of the transmitter.

An antenna system for use in cellular and other wireless communication includes a dual polarized compact antenna array. In one embodiment, the antenna system includes four T-shaped dipole antenna elements mounted on a ground plane, forming a side of a square shaped array. In another embodiment, the antenna system includes seven T-shaped dipole antenna elements mounted on a ground plane to form two side by side square arrays, wherein the square arrays share a common T-shaped dipole antenna element.

Improved antennas and antenna systems for use in cellular and other wireless communications systems. A folded mono-bow antenna element is provided which has a substantially omnidirectional radiation pattern in a horizontal plane and shows variation in gain in an elevation plane depending upon the size of an associated ground plane. The folded mono-bow antenna element comprises a main bowtie radiating element and parasitic element wherein the main bowtie radiating element and parasitic element are separated by a dielectric material having a dielectric constant preferably less than 4.5 and, in some cases, less than or equal to 3.3. Various antenna arrays and methods of making the same are also provided.
