Aqueous compositions are employed to form a protective coating on metal surfaces, in particular, ferrous or tin surfaces, and are especially useful for the coating of blackplate or tin-plated cans. The compositions contain, in the form of an aqueous emulsion, an epoxy resin, an alkylated melamine-formaldehyde resin, an acid catalyst, a block copolymer of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide and water. The composition is applied to a clean metal surface by any conventional technique and even-cured to provide a protective, paint-receptive coating.

Water-borne coating for metal surfaces

An organic coating bonded to a metallic substrate and applied from an acidic, aqueous coating composition containing epoxy resin solids and a cross linking resin. The resin solids are incorporated into the coating composition as an emulsion in a water insoluble solvent, so that the reactive resin is isolated from the acidic aqueous medium. The novel composition and the novel method result in a coating which can be pigmented and which can be utilized as a final corrosion resistant coating or as an undercoat for a later applied finish coat.

Coating bath composition and method

Disclosed is a single-application non-electrolytic method for the treatment of bare metal surfaces to form a corrosion-resistant coating. The clean metal surfaces are treated with an aqueous composition containing a melamine-formaldehyde resin and a vegetable tannin. The resulting dried coating exhibits superior qualities for a single-application coating process when used as a paint base and the process does not require the use of environmentally objectionable chromium compounds. Application to ferrous, zinc or aluminum surfaces may be by any known technique designed to provide a deposited layer of desired uniformity.

Melamine-formaldehyde and tannin treatment of metal surfaces

Disclosed are an improved composition and process for the treatment of aluminum surfaces for the purpose of imparting corrosion resistance and improved receptivity of an organic finish. A lithium compound is added to an aqueous tannin composition to obtain this effect.

Treating aluminum with tannin and lithium

Disclosed is a process for the post-treatment of conversion-coated metal surfaces. The aqueous treating solution contains a melamine-formaldehyde resin and preferably contains a vegetable tannin and is free of chromium. Treatment with the melamine-formaldehyde resin-containing solution provides improved corrosion-resistance over that obtained with a water rinse and treatment with the melamine-formaldehyde resin and vegetable tannin combination solution gives corrosion results as measured by salt spray resistance comparable to those obtained with the use of the commercial dilute chromium-containing rinse.
