Techniques for providing enhanced graphics in a user interface by efficiently using enhanced graphics resources. A computing device displays the enhanced graphics in an upper view of the user interface and the enhanced graphics resources identify a visual region in which the enhanced graphics are positioned. The computing device accesses the enhanced graphics resources to identify and store a hit test region based on the visual region. The hit test region is stored separately from the enhanced graphics resources for hit testing. When a hit is received in the user interface, the computing device determines whether the upper view or lower view will respond to the hit based on the hit test region that is stored separately from the enhanced graphics resources.

Graphics performance for complex user interfaces

A method for dynamic installation and activation of software packages in a distributed networking device. A master node provides a software package database that contains software packages for all nodes. It notifies a node that a software update is being requested, which examines the package identifiers and the dependencies and determines the running processes that will be affected by the update. The processes evaluate the effect that the update will have on their operation. If any of the processes determine that the update will degrade or have a negative impact on the operation of the node, the process will veto the update. If the master node receives no vetoes, it updates the node which installs and activates without interrupting the normal operation of the node.

Dynamic installation and activation of software packages in a distributed networking device

A Distributed Ring Protocol (DRiP) arrangement includes a database and protocol for maintaining and distributing information within a distributed token ring (TR) bridge having a logical switch fabric that is distributed over a TR switching network of switches interconnected by trunk links, such as Inters witch Link (ISL) trunks. The DRiP information is used by switches within the ISL switched fabric to determine the status (configured and/or activated) and association (within a switch) of ports of the distributed bridge.

Distributed ring protocol and database

A backup CRF VLAN arrangement provides an alternate, redundant path for traffic between undistributed Concentrator Relay Functions (CRFs) located on separate switches interconnected by trunk links of a distributed token ring bridge. The backup CRF virtual local area network (VLAN) arrangement defines a backup network path which may be utilized if a primary active path is not a valid path to a backup network. Notably, the backup network comprises a special type of CRF that is distributed among the switches, but that has only one port active at any given time.
