A tire having a modified geodesic belt is described. The ideal geodesic belt path is modified to select the centerline belt angle and to avoid excessive build up of the belt at the belt edges. The method includes the step of calculating the minimum three dimensional distance from one belt edge to the other belt edge preferably using dynamic successive approximation.

Pneumatic tire with geodesic belt

Pneumatic tires for aircraft service having a belt package with shoulder reinforcement. The tire includes a belt reinforcing structure or belt package having multiple cut belts, multiple spiral wound belt layers positioned radially between the cut belts and the tread, and multiple spiral wound shoulder layers proximate the shoulder. The spiral wound belt layers and the spiral wound shoulder layers are formed by a continuous cord-reinforced strip having a strip width. The spiral wound belt layers are characterized by a first winding pitch of approximately one strip width per revolution and the spiral wound shoulder layers are characterized by a second winding pitch of less than one strip width per revolution. Alternatively, the spiral wound shoulder layers may be formed with a tiered arrangement by shifting the starting location for successive spiral wound belt layers laterally so that the side edges are not coincident.

Pneumatic aviation tire

A pneumatic tire having a carcass and a belt reinforcing structure wherein the belt reinforcing structure is a composite belt structure having at least one pair of radially outer zigzag layers and at least one spirally wound belt layer with cords inclined at an inclination of 5 degrees or less relative to the tire's centerplane and located radially inward of and adjacent to the at least two radially outer belt layers. The at least two radially outer zigzag belt layers have cords inclined at 5 degrees to 30 degrees relative to the tire's centerplane and extending in alternation to turnaround points at each lateral edge of the belt layer. At each turnaround point the cords are folded or preferably bent to change direction across the crown of the carcass thus forming a zigzag cord path.

Tire having a composite belt structure

An aircraft tire having a folded belt construction and a belt edge strip over the folded belt construction has improved high speed properties. The belt edge strip substantially covers the top surface and/or the bottom surface of the folded belt in addition to the folded belt edges. The folded belt construction is reinforced with high modulus materials, and the belt edge strip is reinforced with low modulus materials. In a method of the invention, plies which make up the belt reinforcement package are applied to a belt building drum while the building drum is at different diameters to minimize stresses on the belt package. In a method of building a tire of the invention, a tire carcass on a tire building drum is expanded to the belt package.

Aircraft tire with improved high speed properties

A method of forming a composite belt structure for a tire is disclosed. The composite belt structure has cord reinforced layers including at least two radially outer zigzag belt layers. The cords per inch in the shoulder portion are greater than the cords per inch in the central portion as measured centered on the centerplane of the belt structure. The method discloses the steps of applying a multicord reinforced strip having a strip width SW onto a rotating crowned building drum, the strip being wound in a zigzag configuration to form at least two zigzag layers, wherein the crowned drum has non-overlapping portions of the strip placed in a central portion and extending in alternation to a pair of shoulder portions having portions of the strips overlapping to form belt layers.

Pneumatic tire with composite belt structure

A pneumatic tire for use in aircraft landing applications is provided. The tire includes a breaker assembly A, B having circumferentially extending layers of cord fabric and wear strips to enhance performance. In one embodiment, the wear strips are rubber and are provided as central portions of breaker layers with cord fabric extensions on either side. In a second embodiment, the wear strips are thin, narrow rubber strips imposed between adjacent cord fabric breaker layers . In a third embodiment, the wear strips are narrow cord fabric strips imposed between adjacent cord fabric layers

A radial ply pneumatic tire (10) has carcass plies (13,14,15) reinforced by cables comprising only yarns of aramid filaments, and belt plies (31-35) reinforced by cables comprising at least one yarn of aramid filaments twisted together with at least one yarn of nylon or polyester filaments. In a preferred embodiment which is suitable for use on an aircraft, there are both turn-up (13,14) and turn-down (15) carcass plies.

A pneumatic tire (10) has adjacent carcass plies (13, 14, 15) which are reinforced by cables comprising aramid filaments. The amount of strength retained by the cables over a period of normal use of the tire is increased when for each pair of adjacent carcass plies: (a) the cables of the radially innermost of said carcass plies intersect the mid-circumferential plane (CP) of the tire at a first angle in the range of 75.degree. to 105.degree. and the cables of the radially outermost of said carcass plies intersect the mid-circumferential centerplane (CP) at a second angle in the range of 75.degree. to 105.degree.; (b) said second angle is nearer to 90.degree. than said first angle; and (c) the included angle between said first and second angles is not greater than 10.degree..
