A family of new and novel molecules for mechanically superior two-dimensional (2D) polymers is described herein. By combining stiff carbon-containing cyclic polymer nodal units with more compliant linear polymer bridge units in an ordered, 2D repeating molecular structure it is possible to tailor the mechanical properties of 2D polymers and their assemblies to provide high stiffness, strength, and toughness. Furthermore, the inherent dimensionality of 2D polymers and their ability to be stacked into ordered and chemically interactive ensembles gives them inherent benefits in a variety of barrier and structural applications over current stiff and strong linear polymer technologies.

This invention outlines a method for synthesizing a blended resin system in a one pot reaction that may utilize, for example, bio-based anhydrosugars such as isosorbide as a principle component to produce isosorbide dimethacrylate and other monomeric materials for thermosetting applications. This invention establishes a one-pot procedure for reacting a hydroxy group containing compound with methacrylic anhydride in the first step and using the by-product methacrylic acid to react with glycidyl ethers to form additional methacrylate compounds in the second step. This methodology can be formulated to produce a wide array of resin systems that have controlled ratios of hydroxy group containing compound/cross-linker/reactive diluent. Additionally, the novel resin systems may be partially to fully bio-based, promoting global sustainability and reducing costs, and when free radically polymerized have properties that meet or exceed their petroleum derived counterparts.

The present invention relates to the unexpected discovery of novel monomer compounds capable of crosslinking interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs). In certain embodiments, the monomer compounds of the invention each comprise at least one methacrylate functionality capable of forming polymeric bonds with other methacrylate and vinyl functionalities, and at least one epoxide functionality capable of forming polymeric bonds with epoxide functionalities, amine functionalities, and/or reactive oxygen species.

The present invention relates to the unexpected discovery of novel multi-aromatic, multi-substituted compounds. In certain embodiments, the compounds of the invention are generated by condensing at least two phenolic- and/or aniline-containing monomers and an aromatic, aliphatic or heteroaromatic aldehyde- and/or ketone-containing monomer. In other embodiments, at least one monomer is isolated from a bio-based resource. In yet other embodiments, the compounds of the invention are bis- or poly-phenolic compounds.

Bio-based, multi-aromatic compounds, and methods of making and using same

Grafted triglycerides comprising a triglyceride grafted with a fatty acid residue containing 4 to 30 carbon atoms are reacted with an epoxide resin and an amine curing agent to yield an epoxy thermoset. The grafted triglyceride is prepared by reaction of an epoxidized triglyceride with a fatty acid. By varying the length of the fatty residue, the number of fatty residues per triglyceride, the identity of the epoxy resin and the amine curing agent, it is possible to prepare epoxy thermosets that exhibit superior physical properties compared to the properties of epoxy thermosets prepared without the grafted triglyceride, or as compared to epoxy thermosets wherein the epoxidized triglyceride is used in place of the grafted triglyceride.

Multi-modal vinyl ester resins having one or more of good fracture toughness, good processing viscosity, and low volatile organic compound emissions are provided. The multi-modal vinyl ester resins are the reaction product of a liquid or crystalline epoxy and an amorphous, solid epoxy, as determined at 25&#xb0; C., with a vinyl carboxylic acid. The multi-modal vinyl ester resins may contain a reactive diluent, though generally, lower reactive diluent contents are required for such resins than for similar, commercially available vinyl ester resins.

The present invention relates to a composition and method for fabricating composite resins that produce either reduced or zero volatile organic compound (VOC) and zero hazardous air pollutant (HAP) emissions. The non-volatile reactive diluents of the composite resin, fatty acid monomers, enhance the stability, shelf-life, flexibility and strength of the composite resin. The resins incorporating fatty acid monomers may be used to repair military equipment or for any commercial repair purposes.

Novel fatty acid monomers and methods for their synthesis are provided for use in polymerization reactions. Fatty acid monomers are employed as reactive diluents in the polymerization of vinyl esters and polyesters for one or more purposes selected from improving the fracture resistance, lowering the processing viscosity and reducing the volatile organic compounds present in the polymerization mixture.
