A system for delivering and applying a flowable mixture to an article (-) is disclosed. The system includes a mixture delivery system () and a skinning system (). The mixture delivery system () includes a mixer () configured to mix a dry material and a fluid to produce the flowable mixture, and a pump () configured to pump the flowable mixture to a delivery line. The skinning system () receives the flowable mixture from the mixture delivery system () through the delivery line. The skinning system () includes a skinning pipe () configured to apply the flowable mixture to the article (-) and a manifold () that supports the skinning pipe (). The skinning system () also includes an article feeding mechanism () configured to push the article (-) into the skinning pipe (). The skinning system () includes a transfer system () configured to hold the article (-) and move the article (-) out of the skinning pipe ().

Systems and methods for skinning articles

Systems and methods of measuring ferrule-core concentricity for an optical fiber held by a ferrule are disclosed. The method includes: generating ferrule distance data by measuring distances to a ferrule outside surface as a function of rotation angle using a distance sensor and rotating either the ferrule or the distance sensor about an axis of rotation that is off-center from the true ferrule axis; aligning the axis of rotation with the fiber core; using the ferrule distance data to determine a position of the true ferrule center relative to the optical fiber core; and measuring the concentricity as the distance between the true center of the ferrule and the optical fiber core.

Ferrule-core concentricity measurement systems and methods

Gradient index (GRIN) lens holders employing groove alignment feature(s) and a recessed cover, as well as optical connectors and methods employing such GRIN lens holders, are disclosed. In one embodiment, the GRIN lens holder contains one or more internal groove alignment features configured to secure one or more GRIN lenses in the GRIN lens holder. The groove alignment features are also configured to accurately align the end faces of the GRIN lenses. The GRIN lens holder also contains a recessed cover having a front face that is negatively offset with respect to a mating surface of the GRIN lens holder. The GRIN lens holders disclosed herein can be provided as part of an optical fiber ferrule and/or a fiber optic component or connector for making optical connections.

A mechanism for positionally restraining a microplate is disclosed. The mechanism is defined by a base having at least one surface with a receptacle for the insertion of a microplate into the base. Supports and/or positioning structures on a surface of the base have point contacts to restrain movement of the microplate in a stable position for repeatable optical detection measurements. The supports and/or positioning structures permit insertion of the microplate for an initial measurement, removal of the microplate for analytical manipulation, and re-insertion of the microplate to an exact position so as to allow analysis of precise comparative measurements by an optical reader.

Kinematic wellplate mounting method

An apparatus for sealing a substrate assembly by applying a force to the assembly while simultaneously exposing the substrate assembly, and in particular a sealing material disposed between two substrates of the substrate assembly, to an irradiating beam of electromagnetic energy. The beam heats, cures and/or melts the sealing material, depending upon the sealing material to form the seal. The force is applied by directing a flow of fluid against the substrate assembly, and beneficially improves contact between the substrates of the substrate assembly and the sealing material during the sealing process, therefore assisting in achieving a hermetic seal between the substrates.

Methods for producing optical fibers along nonlinear paths include incorporating fluid bearings. An optical fiber is drawn from a preform along a first pathway, contacted with a region of fluid cushion of a fluid bearing, and redirected along a second pathway as the fiber is drawn across said region of fluid cushion.

A non-contact method for measuring the tension applied to a drawn optical fiber includes drawing an optical fiber and displacing the optical fiber by applying a pressurized fluid to the optical fiber. The pressurized fluid may be applied to the optical fiber using a fluid bearing. The fluid bearing may include a fiber support channel. The optical fiber may be directed through the fiber support channel and is displaced relative to the fluid bearing by supplying the pressurized fluid to the fiber support channel. The displacement of the optical fiber caused by the application of the pressurized fluid to the optical fiber may then be measured. The tension applied to the optical fiber may then be determined based on the determined displacement.

Methods for measuring the tension of optical fibers during manufacture

A pull roll assembly is described herein that is used to draw a glass sheet. The pull roll assembly includes a first roll assembly, a second roll assembly and a device (e.g., differential drive, sensor(s)). The device enables one to control the first and/or second roll assemblies based in part on pulling forces (e.g., glass contact normal force and/or required sheet pulling force) associated with a glass sheet while the glass sheet is being drawn between the first and second roll assemblies. A glass manufacturing system and method for using the pull roll assembly are also described herein.
