A prime mover arrangement includes a prime mover () including a first shaft () driven by the prime mover, a second shaft (), and a speed and torque manipulator () connected to the first shaft () and to the second shaft (), the speed and torque manipulator permitting manipulation between at least one non-one-to-one ratio or a plurality of different input/output ratios of speeds and torques input by the first shaft and output to the second shaft. A method is also disclosed.

A series hybrid transmission includes a first motor device for driving a first shaft, a second motor device for driving a second shaft. Drive gears on the first and second shafts can be simultaneously engaged in the same or different gears and torque from the two motor devices can he multiplied. When shifting up or down, the drive gear on one of the shafts can be disengaged while the drive gear on the other one of the shafts remains engaged to avoid interruption in application of torque.

A method of operating an engine includes starting and stopping operation of an internal combustion engine that includes a crankshaft having a bearing journal and a bearing in which the bearing journal is rotatable. The crankshaft is constantly turned when the internal combustion engine is in the non-fueled mode. An oil pump can be driven to lubricate the bearing journal and the bearing while the internal combustion engine is in the non-fueled mode to provide hydrodynamic lubrication. A transmission capable of triple overdrive includes a main box section connected to a first input shaft. The main box section comprises clutch collars which are connected to the main shaft and axially movable by an operator to selectively couple one main shaft gear to a main shaft via a countershaft gear fixed on a countershaft. An auxiliary section is connected to the main box section and contains a splitter section and a range section. An output shaft is connected to the auxiliary section The transmission is selectively configured Io operate in a plurality of gear combinations. At least three of the gear combinations are configured for overdrive. The main box section is connected directly to the splitter section.

A parallel hybrid vehicle launches from rest or near rest with its internal combustion engine and with its electric motor/generator in generator mode, accelerates to a maximum speed, and decelerates to rest with its internal combustion engine disengaged and its motor/generator in generator mode. Electrical energy generated is stored in an energy storage device and is only as much energy as needed for operation of the vehicle's electrically powered auxiliary equipment while the vehicle is at rest.
