A valve actuation system comprises a first arm having a first arm contact surface and operatively connected to a valve actuation motion. A second arm having a second arm contact surface is operatively connected to the at least one engine valve. A discrete lost motion device is provided that is controllable between a first, motion conveying state and a second, motion absorbing state. The discrete lost motion devices comprises a plunger contact surface and a housing contact surface. The housing contact surface is configured to engage one of the first or second arm contact surfaces, and the plunger contact surface is configured to engage another of the first and the second arm contact surfaces. The first and second arm contact surfaces, the housing contact surface and the first plunger contact surface are configured to support the discrete lost motion device between the first arm and the second arm.

The present disclosure provides a lubrication system comprising: a pump having an inlet in fluid communication with a lubricant source and an outlet; a cooler having an inlet in fluid communication with the outlet of the pump and an outlet; a lubrication filter having an inlet in fluid communication with the outlet of the cooler and an outlet; a first delivery path in fluid communication with the outlet of the lubrication filter, the first delivery path being configured to deliver cooled, filtered lubricant to a bearing system of an engine; and a second delivery path in fluid communication with the outlet of the pump, the second delivery path being configured to deliver uncooled, unfiltered lubricant to piston cooling nozzles of the engine.

Reduced parasitic lube system

A cylinder liner for a cylinder bore of a cylinder of an internal combustion engine. The cylinder liner includes a cylindrical casing having an outer surface and an inner surface, wherein each surface has a respective surface area. The liner includes a liner seat positioned on the outer surface wherein the liner seat engages with the cylinder bore to position the cylindrical casing in the cylinder bore. The liner includes a relief feature positioned on the outer surface either adjacent the liner seat or above a mid-stop wherein the relief feature resists distortion of the cylindrical casing from the cylinder bore. The liner can include a stiffening feature positioned above the relief feature on the outer surface. The relief feature forms a depressed surface on the outer surface and the stiffening feature forms a raised surface on the outer surface of the cylindrical casing.

Profiled cylinder liner for bore distortion control

An engine block includes one or more cylinder bores wherein each cylinder bore is surrounded by a cylinder bore wall. The cylinder bore wall includes a liner stop mechanism to locate a liner in the cylinder bore. The cylinder bore includes a mid-portion that spans between an upper end and a lower end, wherein the liner stop mechanism can be located near the upper end, near the lower end, or the mid-portion. The engine block has an outer cylinder block wall that is exterior to the cylinder bore wall. The outer cylinder block wall includes a first rib positioned above the liner stop mechanism and a second rib positioned below the liner stop mechanism relative to a cylindrical axis of the cylinder bore. The first and second ribs straddle the liner stop mechanism to reduce rotation and buckling of the liner during operation of the engine.

An engine block includes one or more cylinder bores at least partially surrounded by a cylinder bore wall. The cylinder bore wall includes a liner stop mechanism to support a liner in the cylinder bore. The engine block has an outer cylinder block wall that is exterior to the cylinder bore wall. The outer cylinder block wall includes at least one rib located relative to the liner stop mechanism to reduce rotation and buckling of the liner during operation of the engine.

The cylinder block portion includes a plurality of cylinder block openings disposed therein, a cylinder block flange portion positioned at a top of the cylinder block portion and a cylinder block crankcase portion disposed at a base of the cylinder block. The cylinder block flange portion is configured for coupling the cylinder block to a cylinder head. The cylinder block portion includes a plurality of cylinder block walls extending between the cylinder block flange portion and the cylinder block crankcase portion and positioned about the plurality of cylinder block openings. The cylinder block walls house a plurality of internal channels. The plurality of cylinder block walls are void of enclosed openings extending through at least one of the cylinder block walls in the plurality of cylinder block walls.

A cylinder head defines an EGR crossover tube integrally formed in the cylinder head. The EGR crossover tube includes a first end fluidly coupled to an exhaust port of an engine. A second end is fluidly coupled to an intake port of the engine. A Venturi tube configuration is positioned between the first and second ends. A first sensor port extends through the cylinder head to the EGR crossover tube. The first sensor port is positioned at a restriction of the Venturi tube configuration. A second sensor port extends through the cylinder head to the EGR crossover tube. The second sensor port is positioned proximate the first end. A differential pressure sensor includes a first pressure sensor positioned in the first sensor port and a second pressure sensor positioned in the second sensor port.

Systems and methods are provided for a cylinder block having one or more bulkheads. The bulkheads provide a dual-wall structure that may enhance the stiffness of the cylinder block in bending and torsion. The bulkheads may also provide an oil drain to allow oil to directly drain through a hollow core of the bulkhead. An overflow outlet may be formed in an inner wall of a bulkhead. In some implementations, a cylinder block with bulkheads may increase an oil capacity of an engine.

An engine assembly and method of distributing coolant in an engine assembly. A cylinder block includes one or more pairs of cylinder block openings disposed therein. Each pair of cylinder block openings include two cylinder block openings, each configured to house a piston. A cylinder head in fluid communication with the one or more pairs of cylinder block openings. A coolant manifold includes coolant flow passages, each in fluid communication with a coolant flow inlet disposed in the cylinder block between the two cylinder block openings in each pair of cylinder block openings. Fluid from each coolant flow inlet diverges into two coolant flow passages, each extending about a peripheral portion of a respective cylinder block opening. Each coolant flow passage extends from the peripheral portion of the respective cylinder block opening into one or more outlets from the engine block and into the cylinder head.

The engine block includes a plurality of cylinder barrels positioned in the engine block, at least one oil jacket channel formed in the engine block, and an oil inlet port positioned in a peripheral wall of the engine block and connected to the at least one oil jacket channel. The at least one oil jacket channel includes a plurality of curved channel sections. Each curved channel section in the plurality of curved channel sections extends about at least a portion of a circumferential portion of a respective cylinder barrel in the plurality of cylinder barrels. The at least one oil jacket channel extends between adjacent cylinder barrels of the plurality of cylinder barrels in the engine block.

The at least one oil jacket channel includes a plurality of curved channel sections. Each curved channel section in the plurality of curved channel sections extends about at least a portion of a circumferential portion of a respective cylinder barrel in the plurality of cylinder barrels.
