Disclosed embodiments may relate to systems and methods for monitoring and/or mapping noise data from a plurality of noise monitoring devices. In some embodiments, the plurality of noise monitoring devices may include hearing protection devices configured to detect noise, and typically may communicate such noise data (which may also include location) so that the noise data can be pooled. The pooled noise data from the plurality of noise monitoring devices may then be used to the benefit of one or more of such noise monitoring devices.

Hearing protection device

A hearing protection device configured to measure the noise exposure of a user and to provide a time remaining estimate until a maximum noise exposure level is achieved. Generally, the hearing protection device may comprise a sound sealing section, a microphone configured to generate a detected sound signal indicative of the measured sound level at the user's ear canal, a memory/storage configured to record the detected sound signal as sound exposure history, a timer configured to measure the amount of time the hearing protection device is exposed to sound, and a processor configured to receive a timer signal from the timer and the detected sound signal to calculate a time remaining estimate until reaching the maximum noise exposure level. Additionally, the maximum noise exposure level may be based on industry regulations or personalized hearing thresholds.

A hearing protection earmuff may be configured to dampen vibrations at an interface. Generally, the hearing protection earmuff may comprise two ear cups, a headband attached to and connecting the ear cups, one or more sensors, a processor, an electroacoustic shock absorber, and an electromagnetic controller. Typically, the electromagnetic controller may be associated with an electroacoustic shock absorber and may be configured to control the dampening of the electroacoustic shock absorber. The dampening of the electroacoustic shock absorber may occur as a smart fluid changes viscosity in response to a signal received from the electromagnetic controller. In some embodiments, the clamping force between the headband and the ear cup may be varied by the electroacoustic shock absorber to minimize the vibrational impact on the user's ears. In some embodiments, the electroacoustic shock absorber may control the compressibility of the seal cushion located on each ear cup.

Embodiments relate generally to methods for customizing speakers in hearing protection earcups in conjunction with an amplifier so that the maximum speaker output may be capped, for example to acceptable OSHA or other such standards. By customizing such speaker(s), the maximum speaker output may be set precisely at the desired cap level. Thus, hearing may be protected, while also ensuring that maximum speaker output will not undershoot the desired cap level (which might negatively affect performance).

Embodiments relate generally to devices and methods for improved active noise cancellation hearing protection. For example, multiple speakers might be used in each earcup, with each speaker providing active noise cancellation for a narrow frequency range which is a portion of the total frequency range of the entire array of speakers. By dividing the active noise cancellation up across an array of speakers, each speaker can better target its specific narrow frequency range, resulting in improved active noise cancellation.

Embodiments of the disclosure include hearing protection earmuffs, which generally might have two earcups providing passive noise reduction (e.g. an effective NRR to protect a user from a damaging external noise environment). Disclosed embodiments include systems and methods for transmitting external sounds to a speaker within the earcup, blocking transmission of sounds that are higher than a hearing protection threshold, amplifying sounds that are below the hearing protection threshold, and reducing or filtering undesirable background sounds by determining the frequency of the transmitted sounds.

Embodiments of the disclosure include methods and devices for folding the earmuffs of a headset via at least two different axes of rotation. The headset may comprise a headband and two earmuffs, wherein the earmuffs are connected to the headband, and wherein the headband comprises a plurality of rotational axes, about which the earmuffs may be rotated in one or more directions. The movement of the earmuffs may allow for comfortable wearing of the earmuffs in different positions, such as around a wearer's neck, and may allow for compact carrying or storage of the headset. The headset and earmuffs may be designed to be used as hearing protection, wherein the earmuffs may be larger and comprise special material, and wherein the earmuffs may comply with regulations for hearing protection devices.
