An exemplary exercise device includes a handheld force sensor with complementary male and female connectors extending from opposite sides thereof. The force sensor senses pulling and/or pushing forces exerted between the opposing sides. The male connector may be resistant to travel through the female connector except in limited orientations. The connectors allow the exercise device to interface with any mobile or immobile device having complementary connectors. Non-complementary connectors can connect with the exercise device through a body passage. Depending on devices interfaced with the exercise device, force readings can be taken during a vast variety of motions using different muscle groups during training, exercise, and rehabilitation/physical therapy in homes, schools, healthcare facilities, health clubs, etc. Force readings from the force sensor may be communicated via wired and/or wireless technologies to other devices for live (real-time) processing and display as well as additional historical analysis and reporting.

An exercise bar is configured to removably receive elastic lines, allowing its use in elastic resistance exercises, and/or inelastic lines, allowing its use in suspended bodyweight exercises. Separate grips, each being engageable by a hand or a foot, are also provided, and may be removably connected to the bar or to each other via one or more lines. Bar supports may also be provided to support the bar above the ground, allowing easy use of the bar to perform push-ups and other exercises.

Versatile exercise bars and handles

An exercise assembly includes an exercise handle with a grip base suitable for resting on a floor, and a grip elevated above the grip base. A user can situate the grip bases of a pair of the exercise handles on the floor, grasp their grips, and then perform push-ups. The grip bases can also be mounted to the top of a door or to other overhead structure, and the user can then grasp their grips to perform chin-ups. Preferably, this is done by providing a cradle which mounts to the door or other overhead structure, wherein the exercise handles may be firmly (but removably) nested into the cradles to mount them to the structure. The exercise handles may also bear passages or attachments for receiving elastic (or inelastic) cables for use in performing further exercises.

Push-up / chin-up exercise assembly

A strap attachment device includes a main body with a lower body end that has an opening suited for a strap. Based on its position, a cam lever at the opening of the lower body end holds or releases the strap, permitting adjustment of the length of the strap that enters the opening. Extending upward from the lower body end is an upper body end that is curved into a hook or any other shape appropriate for connection to an object. A flexible or translatable gate may extend from the main body so as to prevent the upper body end from inadvertently becoming detached from the object. Slip-resistance on the upper body end resists slippage between the upper body end and the object during side-to-side movements. Ends of the strap may include a loop or handle or connect to other devices.

Exercise bars and handles with interchangeable attachment of elastic and inelastic members

An exemplary exercise device descending from an elevated support (e.g., a bar or door frame) allows a user to insert a body part in a loop (e.g., a foot for pull-ups or a waist for push-ups) descending from an elastic resistance unit, which uses a variable number of stretchable elastic members between top and bottom connectors to reduce the effective weight the user has to pull/push up. Each of the resistance unit top and bottom connectors has several elastic member sockets, each socket having a socket passage extending through the connector. Each elastic member has an elongated portion between two member plugs sized to resist passing through the elastic member socket passages. Elastic members can be removably and replaceably installed by inserting a portion of each member plug within an elastic member socket, one member plug in each of the resistance unit top and bottom connectors.

Exercise device providing variable lift assistance during pull-up and push-up exercises

An unconstrained equalization method and apparatus with gain and timing bias to control runaway are provided for a direct access storage device (DASD) data channel. A direction for moving each of a plurality of tap weights of a finite impulse response (FIR) filter is calculated. New tap weights are determined for each of a plurality of tap weights in the direction. A gain of the FIR filter for the new tap weights is compared with a set threshold gain value. A polarity of a gain bias is set to adjust a gain of a gain loop of the data channel by a preselected amount responsive to the compared gain and set threshold gain values, A phase lag of the FIR filter for the new tap weights is compared with a set threshold phase lag value. A polarity of a timing bias is set to adjust a phase lag of a timing loop of the data channel by a preselected amount responsive to the compared phase lag and set threshold phase lag values.

Unconstrained equalization method and apparatus with gain and timing bias to control runaway for direct access storage device (DASD) data channels

An equalization method and apparatus with gain adjustment are provided for a direct access storage device (DASD) data channel. A direction for moving each of a plurality of tap weights is calculated. New tap weights are determined for each of a plurality of tap weights in the direction. A gain of the FIR filter for the new tap weights is compared with a set threshold gain value. A gain of a gain loop of the data channel is incrementally adjusted responsive to the compared gain and set threshold gain values. A phase lag of the FIR filter for the new tap weights is compared with a set threshold phase lag value. A phase of a timing loop of the data channel is incrementally adjusted responsive to the compared phase lag and set threshold phase lag values.

Equalization method and apparatus with gain adjustment for direct access storage device (DASD) data channels

A multi-track density direct access storage device is disclosed. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a direct access storage device for data storage within a data processing system comprises a housing, a rotatable spindle, at least one disk, and several heads. The disk is fixedly mounted to the rotatable spindle, and the rotatable spindle is rotated by a motor within the housing. A first disk surface of the disk has a first track density and a second disk surface of the disk has a second track density; wherein the second track density is preferably greater than the first track density. Each of the several heads contains a transducer to read and write information from and to the disk during the disk rotation. Under this configuration, the lower storage density it first disk surface is utilized to store data that are frequently accessed while the higher storage density second disk surface is for storage capacity supplementation such that the total data storage capacity of the direct access storage device can be increased without degrading the data-accessing performance.

Multi-track density direct access storage device

In a ultra high density, multiple-disk drive, track switches within a cylinder of tracks as well as track switches to tracks on other cylinders both require a movement of the head stack actuator. Track switching latency in such a disk drive is reduced by overlapping pre-movement portions of the track switching process with the data transfer operation of the currently active recording head. In addition, post-movement portions of the track switching process are overlapped with the movement of the heads so that the next selected read/write head may begin a data transfer operation immediately upon arrival at the next track. Further, the pre-movement and post-movement portions of the track-switch process may be overlapped with low displacement movement of the read/write heads relative to the currently active track or the next track.

Method and apparatus for reducing track switch latency in a disk drive

A method and apparatus for automating the convergence of tap weights in an equalizer for a data channel is disclosed. The automated equalization method is contained within the channel and obtains a temporary copy of each of a plurality of current tap weights from a current tap weight memory, determines a direction for modifying the temporary copy of each of the plurality of current tap weights, constrains the modifications to the temporary copy of each of the plurality of current tap weights to produce adjusted tap weights and at the end of a read operation, stores the adjusted tap weights to the current tap weight memory for use during a next read operation. The sign&mdash;sign LMS products for each of the plurality of current tap weights is calculated, the sign&mdash;sign LMS products for each of the plurality of current tap weights is summed to produce a count and the count for each of the plurality of current tap weights is compared to a threshold produce a desired tap direction indicator for each of the plurality of current tap weights. The desired tap direction comprises a positive value if the count is more positive than the threshold and a negative value is if the count is more negative than the threshold. The summing further includes incrementing the count by &plus;1 if the sign product is positive and by &minus;1 if the sign product is negative. The constraining further includes moving odd/even taps in pairs having opposite signs so that the sum of the odd/even taps is unchanged.

Self contained equalization method and apparatus

A method and apparatus are provided for variable spindle rotation speed in a direct access storage device (DASD). The direct access storage device (DASD) includes a multi-phase, brushless, direct current (DC) spindle motor. Speed and commutation control signals are applied to a plurality of spindle motor drivers for normally operating the plurality of spindle motor drivers in saturation mode while performing read and write operations. A spindle rotational speed is detected and compared with a predetermined spindle speed range. Responsive to the detected spindle rotational speed being within said predetermined spindle speed range, normal operations of the direct access storage device (DASD) are enabled. One or more write sync fields are provided on each surface of a magnetic disk media. The write sync field is used for timing write operations in the direct access storage device.

A multi-track density direct access storage device is disclosed. In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention, a direct access storage device for data storage within a data processing system comprises a housing, a rotatable spindle, at least one disk, and several heads. A method and an apparatus for optimizing movement of a disk drive's head actuator arm away from a magnetic latch that holds the arm in a parked position at the Inner Diameter (ID) of a disk. Current energizing of the arm's actuator motor moves the arm away from the magnetic latch and is controlled to compensate for any change in magnetic holding force. When the disk drive is powered up, a current pulse of one polarity is applied to the actuator motor. This initial current pulse normally moves the arm away from the magnetic latch and is followed by a current pulse of the opposite polarity to decelerate movement of the arm. If this initial sequence fails to move the arm away from the magnetic latch, the magnitude of the two current pulses is increased, and the opposite polarity pulse is followed by a small magnitude current of the one polarity. The read signal from the head is monitored to indicate that the arm has moved into the disk's central databand area, and then into the disk's Outer Diameter (OD) area. At this point, the magnitude of current of the one polarity is increased in small steps to gently bring the arm into contact with the disk drive's OD crash stop. The current of the one polarity is then decreased in small steps, and the arm gently moves away from the OD crash stop. The head signal is monitored until the head is positioned at a selected track.
