A submersible pumping system for use in producing wellbore fluids from a wellbore within a subterranean formation includes a motor and a pump driven by the motor to produce the wellbore fluids. The pumping system further includes a self-supporting power cable connected to the pump. The self-supporting power cable includes a plurality of conductors and a plurality of strength members. A method of deploying and retrieving a submersible pumping system in a wellbore includes the steps of connecting a wireline to the submersible pumping system, connecting a self-supporting power cable to the submersible pumping system, lowering the submersible pumping system into the wellbore while the weight of the submersible pumping system is borne by the wireline. The method continues with the step of locating the submersible pumping system on a landing assembly, disconnecting the wireline from the submersible pumping system, and retrieving the wireline from the wellbore without removing the submersible pumping system from the wellbore.

Wireline-deployed ESP with self-supporting cable

An electrical submersible pump ('ESP') has a seal member that carries a packer. A retainer initially retains the packer in a fixed axial position with the seal member as the ESP is lowered into a well conduit. The retainer is releasable after the packer has been set in the conduit in response to a thermal growth axial force on the seal member, enabling relative axial movement between the seal member and the packer. The seal member has annular seal rings that extend over an axial length on the tubular member that is greater than an axial length of the bore of the packer.

Coiled tubing deployed ESP with seal stack that is slidable relative to packer bore

A string of coiled tubing having a power cable therein supports and supplies power to an electrical submersible well pump assembly in a well. The coiled tubing has an upper section and a lower section joining each other, the upper section having a smaller inner diameter than the lower section. The power cable has an upper portion installed in the upper section of the coiled tubing and a lower portion installed in the lower section of the coiled tubing. The power cable has three insulated electrical conductors embedded within an elastomeric jacket. A metal armor strip has turns wrapped helically around the jacket. The armor strip is compressed between the jacket and the coiled tubing both in the upper section and in the lower section of the coiled tubing.

Coiled tubing power cable with varying inner diameter

A connector secures an ESP to coiled tubing containing a power cable. Upper and lower barriers in the connector housing define an upper chamber, a lower chamber, and a center chamber. An upper chamber dielectric fluid in the upper chamber is in fluid communication with the interior of the coiled tubing. A lower chamber dielectric fluid in the lower chamber is in fluid communication with motor lubricant in the motor of the ESP. Center chamber dielectric fluid in the center chamber is sealed from contact with the upper and lower chamber dielectric fluids by the upper and lower barriers. A thermal expansion device has a container portion for allowing center chamber dielectric fluid to expand into the container.

Coiled tubing connector to electrical submersible pump

A method for installing an electrical submersible pump (ESP) in a well containing a production conduit includes securing an ESP to a lower end of a coiled tubing segment containing an electrical power cable. An operator secures a load transfer device with a gripping member to the coiled tubing segment above the ESP. The operator lowers the coiled tubing segment into the well along with the ESP and the load transfer device. The load transfer device contacts an interior side wall of the production conduit with the gripping member and transfers a load on the coiled tubing segment to the production conduit. When powered, the ESP causes well fluid to flow upward from the ESP through the load transfer device up the production conduit.

Load reduction device and method for reducing load on power cable coiled tubing

A string of coiled tubing for an electrical submersible well pump has insulated power conductors encased in an elastomeric jacket within the coiled tubing. A textured interface between the jacket and the inner side wall of the coiled tubing enhances frictional engagement between the jacket and the coiled tubing. The textured interface may be formed on the inner side wall of the coiled tubing and consist of a roughened or knurled surface. A tape may be wrapped helically around the jacket, the tape having an outer side with a textured surface in contact with the inner side wall of the coiled tubing. The textured interface may extend continuously for the length of the coiled tubing.

Frictional enhancement of mating surfaces of power cable installed in coiled tubing

A splice connects segments of coiled tubing and power cable together. The splice has a base and a head, each having an interior conical surface and a collet with fingers that deflect inward in gripping engagement with one of the segments in response to axial movement of the head collet and the base collet. A compression sleeve extends between the base collet and the head collet and exerts forces on the collets while the base and head are being secured together. An insulator tube slides over each of the power conductors. A retainer ring for each insulator tube grips one of the power conductors and abuts a shoulder in the insulator tube to prevent movement of the insulator tube along the power conductor.

Coiled tubing electrical power splice

An electrical submersible pump assembly has modules including a pump, at least one motor, and a pressure equalizer coupled to the motor. First and second ones of the modules have a threaded connection including a first adapter having threads. A second adapter mounted to the second module has a tubular body, a neck of smaller diameter than the body, an external shoulder at a base of the neck, a rim on the neck, and an external groove between the external shoulder and the rim. A collar is rotatably carried and axially movable on the neck, the collar being in threaded engagement with the threads of the first adapter, the collar having an internal groove. A split shoulder ring carried partly in the external groove and partly in the internal groove retains the collar on the neck and is biased into one of the grooves.

Threaded connection for tandem motors of electrical submersible pump

A splice connects a lower coiled tubing segment containing a lower power cable segment to an upper coiled tubing segment containing an upper power cable segment. The splice has a lower terminal electrically connecting together upper ends of lower power conductors. An upper terminal electrically connects together lower ends of upper power conductors. An electrical intermediate connector has an upper end that stabs into engagement with the upper electrical terminal and a lower end that stabs into engagement with the lower electrical terminal. A load supporting member surrounds the intermediate connector and joins to upper and lower ends, respectively, of the lower coiled tubing segment and the upper coiled tubing segment.

An electrical submersible pump assembly has modules including a pump, upper and lower tandem motors, and a pressure equalizer coupled to the motors. A thrust bearing support member is provided in the lower tandem motor and has a central counterbore with a thrust bearing located in the counterbore. Motor wire holes extend axially through the thrust bearing support member and are spaced radially outward from the counterbore. Motor wires of the lower tandem motor extend through the motor wire holes. A plurality of slots extend radially from the motor wire holes to the counterbore. Each of the slots have an axial length at least equal to an axial length of each of the motor wire holes, and a width greater than a diameter of each of the motor wires of the lower tandem motor.

An electrical submersible pump assembly has modules including a pump, a motor, and a pressure equalizer. A first adapter having threads is mounted to one of the modules. A second adapter is mounted to an adjacent one of the modules, the second adapter having a tubular body, a neck, and an external shoulder at a base of the neck. A collar is rotatably carried on the neck and in threaded engagement with the threads of the first adapter. A clamp secures around the neck between the external shoulder and the collar after the collar is fully engaged with the threads on the first adapter. A pair of flanges are mounted to and extend outward from the clamp. A motor lead locates between the flanges.

Threaded connectors between submersible well pump modules

An electrical submersible pump assembly has a rotary pump, an electrical motor, and a seal section. A drive shaft extends from the motor into the pump. A radial bearing for the shaft includes a bearing sleeve secured to the shaft for rotation. A bushing rotatably receives the bearing sleeve in sliding contact. A support member has a receptacle into which the bushing locates. The receptacle has a greater inner diameter than an outer diameter of the bushing, defining an annular gap. A bearing carrier has a bore into which the support member is secured against rotation and radial movement relative to the bearing carrier. A compliant member in the gap in engagement with the bushing and the support member prevents rotation of the bushing relative to the support member and allows limited radial movement of the bushing relative to the bearing carrier.

An electric submersible pump (ESP) torque absorbtion anchor system (TAS) and a method to assemble the same are disclosed. The TAS includes a collar having an uphole end coupled to a production string and a flange formed on an outer diameter of the collar. The TAS also includes a sleeve having a rim extending radially inward from an uphole end of the sleeve. The collar is positioned in a cavity of the sleeve so that oppositely facing shoulders of the collar and the sleeve contact and transfer axial loads between the sleeve and the collar. A spring is positioned in an annulus between the sleeve and the collar and mounts to the collar and the sleeve so that rotational loading of the sleeve relative to the collar transfers to the spring.

Torque absorbtion anchor system and method to assemble same

Systems and methods of cooling a motor of an electrical submersible pump (ESP) assembly employed in an electrical submersible subsea booster pumping system, are provided. A supporting frame structure such as an ESP mounting skid or top end assembly of a caisson having structural members exposed to environmental seawater, is modified or designed to include fluid conduits within the structural members to establish lubricant pathways for lubricant to flow. A heated/hot lubricant line connects between a supporting structure lubricant inlet port and an ESP motor lubricant outlet port. A cooled lubricant line connects between a supporting structure lubricant outlet port and an ESP motor lubricant inlet port. A pump or other fluid moving device circulates lubricant from the ESP motor to the lubricant pathways within the supporting frame structure, whereby the seawater cools the lubricant contained therein, which is then circulated back into the motor to assisting cooling the motor.

Systems and methods of using subsea frames as a heat exchanger in subsea boosting systems

A method of performing a wellbore operation is disclosed. A device is provided that includes a material that expands from an original shape to an expanded shape when a selected charge is applied to material. The device is placed in the wellbore in the original shape. The selected charge is applied to the material to expand the material, causing a pressure differential across the device in the wellbore. A fluid is supplied into the device to set the device in the wellbore.
