An axial fan has an inner-rotor motor which includes a drive end, a non-drive end and a shaft which extends axially from the drive end; and an impeller which includes a cylindrical impeller cup and a number of impeller blades that extend radially from the impeller cup. The impeller cup has an open upstream end and a closed downstream end which is connected to the shaft. In operation, the motor spins the impeller to generate an airflow in a direction from the non-drive end of the motor to the drive end of the motor. The impeller cup is configured to receive the motor therein and surround the drive end of the motor but not the non-drive end of the motor. As a result, the non-drive end of the motor is exposed to the airflow during operation of the fan.

Compact axial fan

A two stage axial fan includes a tubular fan housing, first and second motors which are positioned in series in the fan housing, a first impeller which is positioned in the fan housing and is driven by the first motor, and a second impeller which is positioned in the fan housing and is driven by the second motor. The first motor is positioned on a first foot-mounted motor support structure which is connected to the fan housing and the second motor is positioned on a second foot-mounted motor support structure which is connected to the fan housing.

Axial fan configurations

A fan assembly for an electrical device which comprises a number of heat generating electrical components mounted in an enclosure that includes a front wall, a rear wall and two generally parallel sidewalls. The fan assembly comprises a plurality of fans which are arranged in a row that extends generally perpendicularly between the sidewalls. Each fan comprises an axis of rotation which is oriented at an angle relative to the sidewalls, and the fan assembly further includes a plurality of inlet plenums which each communicate with an inlet end of a corresponding fan and a plurality of exhaust plenums which each communicate with an outlet end of a corresponding fan. In operation, the fans generate an airflow which is distributed through the enclosure by the inlet and exhaust plenums to thereby cool the electrical components.

Fan assembly for rack optimized server computers

A fan comprises a fan housing which includes a fan inlet, a motor which is connected to the fan housing, and an impeller which is removably connected to the motor. The impeller includes an impeller hub, a number of impeller blades which extend radially outwardly from the impeller hub, an impeller leading edge, an impeller trailing edge and an impeller tip. The fan housing includes an inlet shroud which is positioned over the impeller. The inlet shroud comprises an upstream end portion within which the fan inlet is formed and a downstream end portion which is removably connected to a separate portion of the fan housing. The inlet shroud further includes a first section which extends axially from the upstream end portion to approximately the impeller leading edge, a second section which extends axially from the first section to approximately the impeller trailing edge, and a third section which extends axially from the second section to approximately the downstream end portion. The second section comprises a configuration which conforms to the configuration of the impeller tip, and the third section comprises a radius which increases from approximately the upstream end of the third section to approximately the downstream end of the third section.

Flow trim for vane-axial fans

A cooling fan includes an impeller which comprises a plurality of radially extending blades, each of which includes a blade hub, a blade tip and a blade midspan approximately midway between the hub and the tip. In addition, each blade includes a camber of between about 60&#xb0; and 90&#xb0; at the blade hub, between about 15&#xb0; and 40&#xb0; at the blade midspan and between about 15&#xb0; and 40&#xb0; at the blade tip.

High efficiency cooling fan

A cooling fan having a fan housing, a motor which is positioned within the fan housing and a plurality of electronics components which are associated with the motor includes at least one strut which extends radially between the motor and the fan housing and on which the electronics components are mounted.

Fan with strut-mounted electrical components

A cooling fan comprises an impeller which includes a plurality of radially extending blades, each of which includes a blade hub, a blade tip and a blade midspan approximately midway between the hub and the tip. In addition, each blade comprises a blade suction surface, and substantially the entire blade suction surface is visible from the forward looking aft direction.

Low camber microfan

An air mover, such as a cooling fan, comprises a motor and an impeller which is driven by the motor to generate a flow of air through a flowpath. The motor comprises at least one inlet opening and at least one outlet opening, each of which is in fluid communication with the flowpath. In operation of the air mover, a pressure difference between the inlet and outlet openings causes a portion of the flow of air to flow into the inlet opening, through the motor and out the outlet opening to thereby cool the motor.

Reverse flow cooling for fan motor

A FLADE fan assembly includes radially inner and outer airfoils extending radially inwardly and outwardly respectively from an annular shroud circumferentially disposed about a centerline. Inner and outer chords extend between inner and outer leading and trailing edges of inner and outer airfoil cross-sections of the radially inner and outer airfoils respectively. Inner and outer stagger angles between the inner and outer chords respectively at the shroud and the centerline are different. The radially outer airfoils may outnumber the radially inner airfoils and particularly by a ratio in a range of 1.5:1 to about 4:1. Load paths or radii may extend radially through the inner and outer airfoils and through the rotating shroud between the inner and outer airfoils and may pass near or through the inner and outer leading edges and through the inner and outer trailing edges.

A variable cycle turbofan engine includes first and second fans independently joined to respective turbines. A first bypass duct surrounds a core engine disposed in flow communication with the second fan. A second bypass duct surrounds the first bypass duct in flow communication with the first fan. A first exhaust nozzle is joined to both the core engine and first bypass duct. And, a second exhaust nozzle is joined to the second bypass duct.

Double bypass turbofan

A turbofan includes a row of fan blades extending from a supporting disk inside an annular casing. Each blade includes an airfoil having opposite pressure and suction sides extending radially in span between a root and tip and axially in chord between leading and trailing edges. Adjacent airfoils define corresponding flow passages therebetween for pressurizing air. Each airfoil includes stagger increasing between the root and tip, and the flow passage has a mouth between the airfoil leading edge and the suction side of an adjacent airfoil and converges to a throat aft from the mouth. The row includes no more than twenty fan blades having low tip solidity for increasing the width of the passage throat.

Low solidity turbofan

A cooling fan comprises a rotor configured to generate airflow. The cooling fan further comprises an outlet guide vane adapted to receive the airflow generated by the rotor and to orient the airflow in a substantially axial direction relative to the rotor. The cooling fan further comprises a diffuser configured to receive the airflow from the outlet guide vane and produce airflow with higher static pressure relative to an inlet of the diffuser. The cooling fan produces a work coefficient greater than 1.6 and a flow coefficient greater than or equal to 0.4.

High performance cooling fan

A compressor flowpath includes circumferentially spaced apart airfoils having axially spaced apart leading and trailing edges and radially spaced apart outer and inner ends. An outer wall bridges the airfoil outer ends, and an inner wall bridges the inner ends. One of the walls includes a flute adjacent the leading edges for locally increasing flow area thereat.

Fluted compressor flowpath

A gas turbine engine outlet guide vane assembly has annular inner and outer end walls, a flowpath between the inner and outer end walls, outlet guide vanes radially disposed between the inner and outer end walls, and boundary layer energizing means for energizing boundary layers using secondary flow to mix free stream flow into the boundary layers along the inner and outer end walls and suction and pressure sides of the vanes. The boundary layer energizing means includes having the vanes circumferentially leaned in a direction that the suction sides face. The boundary layer energizing means also includes swept leading and/or trailing edges of the vanes that extend radially between the inner and outer end walls. The swept leading and/or trailing edges may be curved inwardly into the vanes from the outer end walls to leading and/or trailing edge points respectively between the end walls. The boundary layer energizing means also includes vanes that are bowed circumferentially outwardly in a circumferential direction and more particularly vanes that are bowed circumferentially outwardly in a circumferential direction the pressure sides face.

Compressor outlet guide vane and diffuser assembly

A rotor assembly for a gas turbine engine operates with reduced circumferential rim stress. The rotor assembly includes a rotor including a plurality of rotor blades extending radially outward from an annular rim. A root fillet extends circumferentially around each blade between the blades and rim. The rim includes an outer surface including a plurality of concave indentations extending between adjacent rotor blades and forming a compound radius. Each indentation extends from a leading edge of the rotor blades towards a trailing edge of the rotor blades.
