A method of encapsulating an electrical winding in an encapsulant composition. The method includes: (i) providing an electrically insulated wire; (ii) applying the encapsulation composition to the electrically insulated wire to encapsulate the wire; and (iii) winding a further layer of wire around the encapsulated wire. The electrical encapsulant composition includes a silica containing inorganic-organic nano-hybrid matrix, and particles of refractory ceramic suspended in the inorganic-organic nano-hybrid matrix.

Methods of encapsulating electrical windings in an encapsulant composition

The present application discloses a fuel system for a gas turbine engine. The engine includes a main alternating current electrical generator driven by an engine shaft such that the electrical output frequency of the electrical generator varies in dependence on shaft rotational speed. The fuel system includes a variable flow fuel pump for providing a fuel flow to the engine, a frequency and/or voltage controller configured to provide electrical power having at least one of a predetermined output frequency and a predetermined voltage, and a variable speed electric motor configured to drive the fuel pump. The electric motor includes an induction motor having a stator and at least a first rotor, the stator having first and second sets of stator windings. Each set of stator windings is configured to impart a torque on the rotor in use.

Described is an electrical machine, including: a rotor having a magnetic flux source mounted thereto; a stator winding arrangement having a first set of electrical connections to provide a first output channel, and a second set of electrical connections to provide a second output channel, the first and second channels being electrically out of phase, wherein the stator winding arrangement is constructed from a plurality of winding portions which are connected in electrical series.

Fault tolerant electrical machine

A component of an electric machine, the component comprising a core; two or more teethextending radially therefrom; at least one electromagnetic winding, each windingaround at least one of the teeth; wherein the corehaving a cooling arrangement including at least one cooling insertlocated between adjacent windingsand whereby in use a cooling fluid being arranged to flow through the at least one cooling insertto facilitate heat transfer and dissipation from the electromagnetic windings. The cooling inserts providing improved cooling, structural support to the windings, and electrical insulation between the windings and the core.

Cooling arrangement of an electrical machine

Embedding electrical machines in gas turbine engines has particular advantages by avoiding the need to provide mechanical connections. However, electrical machines such as switched reluctance electrical machines require relatively large electrical capacitors to accommodate and filter voltage variations in the phases of the electrical machine. Generally, the electrical machine will have a motoring period or generating period with a spacer period between. By injecting electrical current as electrical power in the spacer period, there is limited effect upon net torque within the electrical machine or electrical power generation. However, such stored electrical power in an inductive winding element of the electrical machine augments power pulses provided by a power source incorporating an electrical capacitor. In such circumstances, a smaller sized electrical capacitor can be used.

Electrical machine

Within a power generating arrangementit is typically necessary to provide a coupling with an electrical power distribution cable. Previously this was sometimes achieved through use of brush gear and slip rings but such arrangements are subject to regular replacement for wear, maintenance and also there is a requirement to control humidity about the brush gear coupling. Alternatively, a system allowing an amount of rotation, limited by cable wind up was used. By providing a transformer in which windingsare physically separated by an air gap, but still induce voltage from variation in the magnetic flux, it is possible to create a power generating transfer transformer which can be rotated while driving electrical current for an external load. One componentacts as a stationary stator for ease of coupling to a power distribution cablewhilst the other rotating component incorporates another windingwith an alternating current in it in order to stimulate a voltage and therefore current in the stationary windingfor driving electrical current through to the external electrical load

Generator

With an active magnetic bearingthere is a limit to the available rapidity of response to transient loadings upon a target or rotor. Thus, in accordance with the present invention, storage deviceshold an electrical voltage VS significantly greater than the normal supply voltage V provided by a normal electrical source. In such circumstances when a very large transient loading is detected on the bearinga switchdischarges the supply voltage VS across the coilin order that a more rapid increase and higher value inductance current IT is presented to the coilin response to that variable loading upon the target/rotor. The electrical discharge from the storage devicecan be adjusted using the switchor mixing the storage devicesas required for an appropriate discharge signal shape. Generally, the active magnetic bearingis controlled by a controller device which monitors target/rotorposition in order to determine transient loading and therefore switching of the storage device
