The present disclosure provides systems and methods for channel power offsets for multi-rate dense wave division multiplexed (DWDM) transmission over optical add-drop multiplexers (OADMs). The present invention includes algorithms to set power levels of each type of channel in different sections of a fiber system to optimize the performance of that type of channel at the receiver. For example, the present invention can optimize power levels based on different channel modulation formats, bit rates, channel spacings, and the like. Advantageously, the present invention improves the total capacity (bit rate) and reach that channels of a given bit rate can achieve, and maximizes the reach of channels without sacrificing capacity.

Systems and methods for channel power offsets for multi data rate DWDM transmission over optical add drop multiplexers

Optical systems of the present invention include amplifiers configured to achieve maximum signal channel in a span downstream of the transmitter and amplifier site and to decrease the interaction between the wavelengths at high signal channel powers. In addition, the system can include various types of optical fiber positioned in the network to provide for increased signal channel powers and higher gain efficiencies in the system.

Optical transmission systems including optical amplifiers, apparatuses and methods

Optical transmission systems of the present invention include at least one optical amplifier generally including an optical signal amplifying medium supplied with pump power in the form of optical energy in via an optical pump source. The pump source includes multiple optical sources, at least two of which provide optical energy in first and second wavelength ranges separated by a frequency difference. The amplifier includes a wavelength controller configured to adjust the wavelength range of at least one of the optical sources to vary the frequency difference in a manner sufficient to vary optical intensity noise produced when the optical energy from the multiple optical sources is combined.

Optical transmission systems including optical amplifiers and methods

An add/drop arrangement using broadband optical couplers provides a low-loss, highly flexible add/drop capability for survivable wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) ring networks. At each node in the ring having the broadband optical coupler-based add/drop element, a portion of optical signal power of the entire WDM signal (i.e., all optical channels) is tapped off so that one or more optical channels of particular wavelengths can be dropped at the node. Information (e.g., data) to be added at the node is supplied in an optical channel that is added to the WDM signal via the broadband coupler. Because the add/drop element uses a broadband coupler, another portion of optical signal power of the WDM signal, including any added optical channels, passes through the node onto the ring. Depending on the specific ring topology being used with the broadband coupler-based add/drop arrangement, additional wavelength assignment and handling measures may be required. For example, certain ring topologies may experience interference between optical channels of particular wavelengths due to possible re-circulation of these optical channels beyond the add and drop nodes (e.g., after an optical channel passes its destination node). According to one illustrative embodiment, a node is equipped to perform wavelength conversion and/or wavelength suppression to prevent undesirable re-circulation of optical channels.

Optical add/drop arrangement for ring networks employing wavelength division multiplexing

Optical transmission systems of the present invention include at least one optical amplifier in which pump power being provided to an amplifying medium is amplified using a pump amplifier prior to being introduced into the amplifying medium. In various embodiments, a cascaded Raman resonator is used as a pump booster source to provide Raman amplification of the pump power being supplied from one or more pump sources to the signal channel amplifying medium.
