An ejector for use in a refrigeration system has a mixing tube or diffuser which is partitioned into multiple flow passages. Selectively directing a continuously flowing primary high velocity fluid jet stream, which stream entrains a secondary fluid, cyclically into each of the multiple flow passages creates an effective pulsing of the primary high velocity fluid jet stream with respect to each flow passage. Pulsing the primary high velocity fluid jet stream in this manner enhances the mixing and compression of the primary high velocity fluid jet stream and the secondary fluid in the diffuser.

Pulsating ejector refrigeration system

In accordance with the centrifugal erosion testing method of the invention, a material specimen is rotated with a flat surface facing the direction of rotation and a narrow stream of an abrasive particle slurry is concurrently flowed at a preselected rate in a radial direction across the flat surface, the rotating step being at sufficiently high angular velocity to urge the abrasive particles by Coriolis acceleration into a compacted mass against the flat surface and erode material therefrom by scouring type action as the particles flow radially outward. The rotating and flowing steps are continued for a sufficient preselected duration to erode material to a measurable depth, and the depth to which the flat surface is worn by the abrasive particles is measured as an indication of the erosion resistance of the specimen material. The centrifugal slurry erosion testing apparatus includes a rotatable cylindrical vessel into the interior of which the abrasive slurry is fed and a specimen holder extending radially from the vessel having a cavity for receiving the specimen and a radial slurry flow passage communicating with the interior of the vessel. One of the radial passage longitudinal walls is defined by the flat surface of the specimen. Preferably the specimen holder comprises mating semicylindrical halves one of which has a specimen-receiving cavity in its abutting surface and the other has a narrow rectangular-in-cross section groove in its abutting surface which communicates with the interior of the vessel and together with the flat surface of the specimen defines the radial slurry flow passage. The mating semicylindrical halves are enclosed by a sleeve having an annular rim disposed interiorly of the vessel to prevent radially outward movement of the specimen holder.

Method and centrifugal apparatus for slurry erosion testing

A clutch is disclosed with at least two engaging surfaces and a friction lining between the surfaces. Interposed between the friction lining support member and a driven member is a fusible, low melting point material, which can be an alloy or an element. At an elevated clutch temperature, dependent upon the melting temperature of the selected material, the material will melt and allow the driven member to slip or freely rotate relative to the driving member. The material solidifies upon cooling below its melting temperature, and thereby allows the clutch to engage and function in its usual manner with no maintenance or repair.

Clutch with fusible material as protective element

A charge forming apparatus for metering fuel in which a stream of induction air impinges upon a stream of liquid fuel in which the fuel is stripped from the stream of liquid fuel for dispersing into the air stream and excess fuel is returned to the fuel source. The stream of liquid fuel is flat and wider than it is high.

Fluid jet carburetor

A drive coupling between a pair of shafts transmitting torque when the driving shaft is rotated in one direction and for selectively disengaging the shafts when the driving shaft is rotated in the opposite direction. The coupling comprises a two-part clutch, a first part of which is connected to the driven shaft and the second part of which is connected to the driving shaft. The latter has a cylindrical sleeve which surrounds a cam sleeve connected to the driving shaft with a cam groove engaged by a follower means connected to the clutch sleeve. The cam groove is shaped to provide two cam positions, i.e., one for the coupled drive and the other for disengaging the drive. Means are provided to lock the second part of the clutch against rotation to change the position of the follower for decoupling the shafts upon reverse rotation of the driving shaft. A remotely operated coupling constructed as before mentioned provides a convenient means for coupling and uncoupling pump stages in a submersible pump thus permitting adjustment of the performance of the pump by the addition or subtraction of pump stages. This can be conveniently accomplished without pulling the entire assembly from the well.

Drive coupling

The operating characteristics and the nominal, best operating point of a multi-stage centrifugal pump are shifted to lower flow rates without loss of nominal head and without substantial loss of efficiency by machining or otherwise shortening the trailing edge of all or some of the stationary guide vanes of the diffusers between impeller stages. By so doing, a single pump size can be adapted to a range of flow requirements, as desired. Thus, it is possible to reduce the number of pump sizes manufactured, and yet supply the needs of customers.

Pump modification for matching performance

Rotary drive apparatus includes coaxial inner and outer shaft portions. One portion supports a pair of bearings on axes offset from the shaft axis. The other portion supports rotatable bearing rings offset from the shaft and bearing axes, but in alignment with the bearings. A flexible sealing member is oriented between the two shaft portions and is non-rotatable. Band contact between the bearings, the flexible sealing member, and the rings due to Hertzian stress results in absorption of stress forces over a wide area, thus reducing wear.

Hermetically sealed rotary drive apparatus

A flow valve mechanism comprising a rotating shaft with a valve body mounted on the shaft for rotation therewith and a valve member mounted for radial movement with respect to said body and said shaft. The valve member has a weighted head and a pressure differential head mounted in a fluid cavity. The pressure differential head divides the cavity into a pair of chambers and an orifice is provided in the pressure differential head communicating with said chambers. A fluid inlet supplies fluid under pressure to one of said chambers, and a fluid outlet is connected to said other chamber whereby the flow of fluid through said orifice and to the outlet will be proportional to the speed of rotation of the shaft.

Flow valve

Charge forming apparatus in which impact of an air stream upon a stream of fuel exposed in a channel displaces fuel into the air stream to form a mixture, wherein the length of the fuel stream exposed to the air stream can be varied for controlling the proportions of fuel and air in the mixture.

Charge forming apparatus with variable air-fuel ratio control

A separator assembly for separating different density fluids, such as gas and liquid, which comprises three stages, i.e., an inducer stage, a mixed flow impeller stage, and a centrifugal separator stage. The assembly is usually associated with a pump or pumps for pumping the separated fluids from the assembly. The inducer stage comprises a screw means which, with the impeller stage, delivers fluid to be separated into the separator stage. The impeller stage imparts rotary motion to the fluid. The centrifugal separator stage is a centrifuge and comprises inner and outer cylindrical members which rotate in unison and wherein centrifugal force on the fluid separates the heavier and lighter components, which components flow from the separator stage to the associated pump or pumps.

Separator

A fluid-actuated friction clutch having means for controlling engaging pressure responsive to the relative speed of the driving and driven elements. Such means includes a bleed passage of relieving fluid pressure and control means responsive to the relative rotation of the driving and driven elements for increasing the rate of bleed as the relative rotation decreases.

Slip speed responsive device for controlling engagement of fluid

An improved dynamic shaft seal particularly useful with submersible pumps employing in combination magnetic fluid seals and a centrifugal seal filled with a magnetic seal fluid, wherein the centrifugal seal provides sealing at high rotational speeds, and the magnetic seals prevent escape of fluid from the centrifugal seal chamber at low rotational speeds.

Hybrid magnetic fluid shaft seals

Submersible electric motors, i.e., those which operate in water or brine wells, are protected against the entry of the well liquid which may contain foreign matter by being submersed in a neutral liquid, such as refined oil. Apparatus is provided which includes a float to sense the interface between the oil inside the electric motor and the well fluid outside the motor, which float and a cooperating valve and an auxiliary oil pump provides a regulated flow of oil to maintain the interface of the oil and well fluid at a fixed location. The intrusion of motor damaging well fluid into the motor is prevented.

Oil-water interface control for submersible electric motor

A fuel system in which excess fuel is recirculated from the charge forming apparatus, including means for regulating pressure of the recirculated fuel which in turn influences the air-fuel ratio of the charge forming apparatus. One embodiment of the regulator includes manual adjusting means for maintaining a stable pressure and air-fuel ratio, while another embodiment includes an electronically controlled transducer for varying the pressure and air-fuel ratio while the engine is operating.

Fuel regulator

A device for developing a signal indicative of the torque load on an internal combustion engine and particularly suited to provide said signal for an automatic transmission to be driven by said engine comprising actuator means having a piston movable in response to a pressure. The torque sensing device is adapted to be connected to one or more cylinders of the internal combustion engine so that said device is actuated by the average cylinder pressure as an indication of engine torque load.
