As combined with a protective garment having a generally tubular portion, such as a protective coat having a sleeve, or such as a pair of protective pants having a pants leg, which may be regarded as being generally tubular, and a drag harness, which is assembled to the generally tubular portion and which facilitates dragging a wear from a hazardous situation. The drag harness includes a loop, which is assembled to and within the generally tubular portion, and a grip, which extends through an aperture in the generally tubular portion. The loop and the grip may be made from a single length of strapping or, alternatively, the loop and the grip may be made from separate lengths of strapping. The loop may have a fixed length or, alternatively, the drag harness may have a running noose, by which the loop is adapted to tighten when the grip is pulled.

Drag harness and garment combination

As worn by a firefighter or by an emergency rescue worker, a protective garment having a lower torso-covering portion and two leg-covering portions is equipped with a drag harness or drag harnesses. Each drag harness is accessible through an aperture or apertures somewhere in the lower torso-covering and leg-covering portions. In the illustrated and described embodiments, the protective garment is equipped with two knee pads. Each knee pad is manipulatable between a position wherein such knee pad covers the aperture or apertures in a given one of the leg-covering portions and positions wherein such knee pad does not cover the aperture or apertures in the given one of the leg-covering portions. Each knee pad may serve as a flap or may be completely detachable.

A drag harness for use with a protective garment for a fire fighter or emergency worker is provided. The drag harness includes a gripping loop having a pull strap affixed thereto. The pull strap extends from an aperture in the protective garment such that the drag loop can be pulled through the aperture to drag the wearer. Furthermore, the protective garment may include a pocket wherein a portion of the drag loop may be contained when in a stored state.

A protective helmet, which is intended to be only worn by a wearer who is authorized to pass through a security perimeter, comprises an outer shell, a pocket, which is mounted to the outer shell and which defines a window, a flap, which is movable between a position wherein the flap covers the window and positions wherein the flap does not cover the window, and a card, which is disposed in the pocket. The card displays or records data, which are readable through the window by a human, by an electronic reader, or by both, and which are unique to the authorized wearer of the protective garment. The data may comprise symbolic data, such as bar code data, and may comprise a photograph of the authorized wearer of the protective garment. When the flap covers the window, the flap protects the data against becoming unreadable because of foreign matter, such as soot, or because of surface abrasion.

In a combination wherein a thermal imaging camera having a front lens is mounted to a protective helmet, such as a firefighter's helmet, where the thermal imaging camera is not covered from above by any portion of the protective helmet, wherein a display is mounted below the front area of the brim, and wherein an arm connects the thermal imaging camera to the display, a shroud, which is aluminized so as to be heat-reflective, is adapted, when secured to the protective helmet, to cover the exposed top, side, and front surfaces of the thermal imaging camera, except for a front opening for the front lens and except for a bottom opening, through which the display and the arm connecting the thermal imaging camera to the display can pass when the shroud is being installed.

A protective pad is affixed to a protective garment having a moisture barrier and having an outer shell covering the moisture barrier, the moisture barrier being impervious to moisture and the outer shell being pervious to moisture. The protective pad has a moisture absorber incorporating a superabsorbent polymer and an outer cover pervious to moisture. The moisture absorber covers a region of the outer shell of the protective garment. The outer cover of the protective pad covers the moisture barrier. The outer cover of the protective pad is affixed to the outer cover of the protective garment, at least partly around the moisture absorber. The outer cover of the protective pad and the outer shell of the protective garment, in the covered region, are adapted to conduct moisture into the moisture absorber, in which the superabsorbent polymer is adapted to absorb much if not all moisture conducted into the moisture absorber. The moisture absorber has a fibrous matrix incorporating particles of the superabsorbent polymer and being disposed between an inner cover pervious to moisture and an outer cover pervious to moisture. The covers may be quilted so as to segregate discrete regions of the fibrous matrix. The outer cover of the protective pad is affixed to the outer shell of the protective garment, at least partly around the moisture absorber, as by stitching or adhesively. A gap may be left, which enables the moisture absorber to be withdrawn from a space between the outer cover of the protective pad and the outer cover of the protective garment, to be reinserted into the space therebetween, or to be replaced by a similar absorber to be inserted into the space therebetween. A fastener may be provided to fasten the outer cover of the protective pad releasably to the outer shell, across the gap.
