Radioactive therapeutic device

A brachytherapy source delivery device includes a first tissue-piercing leg having proximal and distal ends, a second tissue-piercing leg having proximal and distal ends, wherein the proximal ends of the first and second tissue-piercing legs are joined at a span section in a first angular orientation with respect to each other, and a carrier element formed at, or attached to, the span section, the carrier element configured to support a radioactive brachytherapy source. The distal ends of the first and second legs can be curved inward toward each other to pierce a tissue when engaged toward each other into a closed position. The first and second tissue-piercing legs can be formed of a wire having a circular cross-sectional or non-circular cross-sectional shape. The carrier element can be tangentially attached to the span section. Each of the legs have a length that is greater than the length of the span section.

The present invention provides a means for achieving greater ability to negotiate small radii like 5 mm of curvature in the human body to treat tumors, for example, with radioactive materials. This is accomplished by incorporating the source capsule into a flexible housing, which, in its simplest configuration, eliminates the direct connection of the source capsule to the driving cable, adding a degree of flexibility that is not available with a direct connection of the source capsule to the driving cable as in the presently available source capsules, and further providing segmented source capsules, and further providing devices for shielding of tissue using the segmented source assemblies.

Radioactive therapeutic device able to turn small radii

Devices and techniques for permanent application of radioactive sources in the field of brachytherapy are described. In an embodiment, an implantable device for radiation therapy of pathological tissues directed toward the administration of radiation to tissue adjacent a cavity wall or surgical excision. The device may include an insertable member, such as a substantially cylindrical member, having at least two ends, a central section positioned between the ends, and a fixation element to retain the implantable device implanted in tissue at a desired position. The device may further include a radioactive source at least partially positioned within the insertable member and that is disposed to deliver radiation to a desired area.

A staple delivery applicator for delivering radioactive staples during brachytherapy medical treatment has an actuating device for attaching source staples located distally thereform. The actuating device is removably attachable to an actuator arm on a proximal end. A staple applicator cartridge holder is attached to the actuator arm on a distal end. The staple applicator cartridge is mountable in the holder and has slots for mounting of radioactive source staples therein. An anvil therein crimps the staples. The staple applicator cartridge holder is removably mountable in a connector and the connector is also removably mounted to a surgical staple holder. A trigger device has a control for closing the anvil of the cartridge holder and for firing of the source staples in the cartridge therein to cause the staples to crimp, and a control for opening the anvil and releasing the trigger device from the actuator arm.

A gamma radiation source comprisesSelenium wherein theSelenium is provided in the form of compounds, alloys or mixtures with one or more nonmetals which upon irradiation do not produce products capable of sustained emission of radiation which would unacceptably interfere with the gamma radiation ofSelenium. A further gamma radiation source comprisesSelenium wherein theSelenium is provided in the form of compounds, alloys or mixtures with one or more metals or nonmetals, the neutron irradiation of which does produce products capable of sustained emission of radiation which would acceptably complement the gamma radiation ofSelenium. Further, the gamma radiation source may have components that are separately irradiated before being combined and the components may be of natural isotopic composition or of isotopically modified composition so that the subsequent radiation peaks may also be adjusted in relative frequency.

Gamma radiation source

A radiation modulator is used with a low energy source for breast brachytherapy using a balloon-like catheter. The clinical evaluation of the patient determines the modulator's optimal configuration so as to produce a non-uniform dose distribution to avoid healthy tissue. This modulation may range from a few percent to many tens of percent. A modulating member having predetermined dimensions and materials, i.e., length, width, thickness, is attached to a catheter in close proximity to the intended location of the radioactive source. The modulating member, for example, may be shaped as a rectangular plate, an oval plate or such and be attachable to a catheter.

A further gamma radiation source comprisesSelenium or a precursor thereof, wherein theSelenium is provided in the form of one or more thermally stable compounds, alloys or mixtures with one or more metals or nonmetals, the neutron irradiation of which does produce products capable of sustained emission of radiation which would acceptably complement the gamma radiation ofSelenium. Further, the gamma radiation source may have components that are separately irradiated before being combined and the components may be of natural isotopic composition or of isotopically modified composition so that the subsequent radiation peaks may also be adjusted in relative frequency.

Radioactive sources are manufactured for treating a tumor or cancerous area occurring around a conduit or duct in the body by emitting X-rays to destroy or reduce the tumors. The sources contain ytterbium which is substantially enriched inYtterbium and which is activated by exposure to neutron flux so as to contain a minor, but significant, fraction of X-ray and gamma-emittingYtterbium. The radioactiveYtterbium source is inserted through a catheter or applicator or needle to the site of the cancer where it is maintained in position for a period of time to reduce the occurrence of cancer. The ytterbium also acts as an X-ray-opaque marker to facilitate external visualization of the sources during their delivery to the treatment site. The sources are encased in a shell to prevent direct contact of the radioactive material with human tissue. This encapsulation may be formed by welding a pair of end caps to a tubular member.

X-ray and gamma ray emitting temporary high dose rate brachytherapy source

A radiation protection system for shielding medical personnel from a gamma ray source being used to provide brachytherapy to a patient is provided by disposing shielding material between the source of radiation and locations outside the radiation protection system in such a manner as to provide shielding for the primary radiation in directions from which radiation from the source may emerge, while providing the patient an open viewing area with a large field of view for the patient to view the locations outside the radiation protection system. The described system reduces the radiation exposure of staff in the treatment room, thereby permitting physicians and therapists to observe the patient without being exposed to excessive amounts of radiation. The opening in the radiation protection system around the head of the patient provides the ability for the patient to see his surroundings and to eliminate the anxiety resulting from the feeling of being closed in.
