Armor for lightweight ballistic protection is made up of composite tiles which can be assembled into modules. The modules can be assembled into panels and can be mounted on vehicles and aircraft and on the walls of shelters. The tiles have core layer(s) of non-homogeneous materials provided by particles of grit distributed in a plastic, preferably rigid polymeric matrix, and which are faced by a layer of high modulus stiff material such as ceramic. The tiles are preferrably backed by elastomeric material and may have sheets of composite material between the elastomeric layer and the non-homogenous core layer. The tiles may be stacked, forming modules and the modules assembled in rows to form panels. An incoming object causes the facing layer to distribute the impact force over a large area of the non-homogeneous grit/polymeric core layer which fractures and absorbs the impact and shock waves, both the compressive direct wave and the tensile wave reflected from the back interface. The non-homogenity and distributed grit particles in the core layer also serve to reflect and disperse the shock wave. The elastomeric layer also aids in distributing the shock wave. In response to the impact and shock waves and projectile penetration, the non-homogeneous grit/polymeric core layer cracks, pulverizes and disintegrates resulting in high energy absorption by crack propagation. Also the small debris particles which are generated absorb kinetic energy as they are propelled into motion, diverted and scattered.

Armor for lightweight ballistic protection

Composite mixture materials made of recycled plastic, glass and rubber, and optionally, sand, gravel, coal combustion by-product and metal, and containing no petroleum distillates (unless a fire retardant or recycled asphalt pavement is used) are disclosed. Methods of using the composite mixture materials include making expansion joints in pavement, filling manhole cover recesses, filling potholes in pavement, making new pavements, and making panels, walls, blocks, impact protection walls, and other such structures. Methods of making the composite mixture materials include heating the components of the material in an inert gas environmentally friendly manner. Compressive pressure is applied to composite mixture materials used in making expansion joints, manhole cover recess fillers, and in filling potholes to build in an elastic strain to overcome both a composite material shrinkage on cooling solidification of the material and the thermal contraction of pavements, and in making the composite material for any other of the uses disclosed.

A dryer uses a two-phase drying system having a brief water condensation interval, followed by impinging parallel laminar recirculating hot air jets which impinge on wet ink to increase the copy rate of inkjet printing and to increase the quality of the printed image.

An air-bearing imaging platen (20) for supporting imaging medium (40). The imaging platen (20) is comprised of an array of disks (62). Each disk has an air exit hole (64) in an approximate center of the disk (62) and a pneumatic system provides air to each disk. Air exits the hole (64) and flows in a radial direction across a surface (69) of the disk (64) creating a negative pressure in the area between the hole (64) and an edge (68) of the disk (62). The negative pressure holds the imaging medium (40) close to the hole (64), and the air flow provides a cushion which supports the imaging medium (40), thus insuring frictionless support while holding the image medium (40) in a curved shape. The air flow exits at the edge (68) of each disk. In various embodiments the contour of the surface (69) of the disk (62) may have various cross sectional shapes such as flat, conical, or spherical.

Humidity control apparatus for articles being stored, comprising: a) a chamber within which the articles are to be contained, b) a conveyor passing by a portion of, and exposed to, the contents of the chamber, c) a drive mechanism for driving the conveyor past the portion of the chamber, d) a desiccant on the conveyor, e) a humidistat positioned to measure the water vapor content within the chamber, and f) a control mechanism operatively connecting the humidistat and the drive mechanism for advancing fresh desiccant past the chamber when the water vapor content of the chamber is too high.

A receiving sheet having a loose toner image on a surface of the sheet is transported from an image member to a fuser by continuing movement of the image member. To prevent disruption of the loose toner image and to accommodate any difference in speeds of the image member and the fuser, air is directed on the image side of the receiving sheet to force the receiving sheet against a curved guide positioned behind the receiving sheet.

In a reproduction machine wherein thermoplastic marking particles are permanently fixed to a receiver member by application of heat in a fusing assembly as the receiver member is transported along a travel path, an improved device for cooling the receiver member. The improved cooling device comprises a thermally conductive guide plate located in juxtaposition with the receiver member travel path downstream, in the direction of receiver member travel, of the fusing assembly. A plurality of heat transfer fins extend from the guide plate on the opposite side thereof from the travel path. The heat transfer fins are oriented in a direction parallel to the direction of travel of a receiver member along the travel path. Cooling air is directed over the heat transfer fins to dissipate heat from a receiver member moving along the travel path.

A preferred embodiment of a composite mirror comprises (1) a substrate of carbon-carbon, (2) intermediate layers of silicon carbide, silicon dioxide, (3) optically polished layers of metals and/or suitable glass (ultralow-expansion or modified fused-silica glass) and (4) an optical coating of high reflectivity. The resulting mirror exhibits desired features including high optical quality and a low coefficient of thermal expansion; such mirrors being well suited to high thermal flux applications. Methods of producing the composite mirror are described.

Heat-absorbing phase-change materials are contained in voids provided in the substrate of a mirror to provide passive cooling. This arrangement for passive cooling of mirrors has been found especially suitable for composite mirrors used in high thermal energy laser and similar applications.
