A functional aspartate prepared by A) reacting an aziridine with a Michael-acceptor molecule to form an aziridinyl aspartate, and B) reacting the aziridinyl aspartate with an active hydrogen containing compound to form the functional aspartate. The functional aspartate can be used in adhesive, sealant or coating compositions that also include an isocyanate functional material. The composition can be used in a method of bonding a first substrate to a second substrate that includes applying a coating of the above-identified adhesive composition to at least one surface of the first substrate or the second substrate, and contacting a surface of the first substrate with a surface of the second substrate, where at least on of the contacting surfaces has the coating applied thereto. The composition can also be used to coat substrates.

Aspartic ester functional compounds

A hydroxyl functional polyester suitable for use in powder coating formulations and bearing sulfonate salt groups, its preparation, and its use in powder coating formulations with methoxyalkylene amino group bearing curatives are described. These polyester resins preferably have 200.degree. C. ICI cone and plate viscosities between about 10 and 90 Poise, have DSC determined glass transition temperatures of at least about 40.degree. C., have hydroxyl numbers between about 10 and 60, and have a sulfonate salt group content between about 0.25 and 4 weight percent. They are preferably synthesized by esterification or transesterification utilizing a sulfonate salt group bearing reactant such as 5-sodium sulfo isophthalic acid. The sulfonate salt groups, preferably alkali metal salt groups, serve to catalyze the curing reaction between the resin and the curative. A preferred powder coating composition involves a resin based on terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid and neopentyl glycol and tetramethoxymethyl glycol uril in a resin to curative weight ratio of between about 90:10 and 94:6.

Internally catalyzed sulfonate bearing hydroxyl terminated powder

The present disclosure is concerned with catalyzing the reactivity of carboxyl group bearing polyesters such as terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, neophentyl glycol based polyesters which are suitable for use in powder coating formulations with epoxide compounds. An enhanced uniformity of catalysis is obtained without a degradation of color by adding 1-methyl imidazole to a liquid melt of the polyester. In a preferred embodiment between 0.03 and 0.3 weight percent of the 1-methyl imidazole is added to a molten polyester which has an acid number between 10 and 100, a 200.degree. C. I.C.I. cone and plate viscosity between 20 and 70 Poise, and a DSC determined glass transition temperature of at least about 40.degree. C. when the polyester is at a sufficiently elevated temperature to have I.C.I. plate and cone viscosity of less than about 70 Poise. A particularly advantageous powder coating composition results when such a polyester is combined with an at least difunctional epoxy compound such as triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) at an epoxy to carboxyl ratio of between about 0.9 to 1.4 extrusion mixing.
