A compact coupling reaming apparatus and method for reaming coupling bolt holes of a rotor coupling. The apparatus includes a fixture plate for mounting the apparatus to the face of the coupling via a plurality of the coupling bolt holes. The apparatus also includes a drill axially slidably, radially slidably, and axially rotatably mounted to the fixture plate. During the reaming process, the drill is first aligned with the center of a first coupling bolt hole, the drill having a fixed distance from an axis of the rotor after being aligned with the center of the first coupling bolt hole. After reaming the first coupling bolt hole, the drill is aligned with a center of the holes and all other coupling bolt holes to be reamed by axially rotating the drill to the center of the second coupling bolt hole while maintaining the fixed distance of the drill from the axis of the rotor.

Coupling reaming apparatus and method

Methods and apparatus for milling a flat surface on a large scale assembly, such as the horizontal joint surface of the outer structure of a steam turbine, are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, lateral and longitudinal drive means are installed on a lower base assembly which is specifically adapted to be mounted and leveled by engaging portions of the structure to be machined. Sliding platforms are engaged with drive means, and a milling head is mounted to the platforms to provide the capability to move the milling head both laterally and longitudinally along the surface to be machined. In a preferred embodiment, the milling head is affixed to a platform that permits indexing the milling head to a position where it may extend beyond the maximum travel of the drive means and thereby machine the corners or otherwise inaccessible areas of the structure.

Methods and apparatus for milling the horizontal joint of a steam turbine

The method of the present invention uses a combination of gap measurement methods to map the gap in a joint in a high pressure vessel such as a steam turbine or steam valve. An exposed and supported surface is hydraulically balanced allowing any twisting of the surface to be removed. The map is then created using a blue contact method, feeler gages, deformable gap measuring medium and laser profiling for both surfaces of the joint. A restoration plan is produced using the map which minimizes the restoration work and produces matching joint surfaces. The joint surfaces are welded and/or machined and finally finished in accordance with the plan. A laser can be used to guide or reference the machine tool. Matching joint surfaces, especially if relatively flat, provide a better high pressure seal than relatively flat surfaces that do not match while relatively flat surfaces that do match produce an even better seal.
