A closure assembly for a camshaft phaser. A plug or a cap is provided with either a radially-sealing gasket seal or a face-sealing gasket seal, the seal being formed by insertion of the plug into a bore, or by installation of a cap over a neck formed in a cover plate. The closure is provided with a plurality of spaced-apart locking elements, and the plate is provided with a plurality of spaced-apart, radially extending second locking elements in the form of fingers surrounding a central opening. During assembly, the closure is mated to the plate with the first locking elements interspersed with the second locking elements. The closure is rotated to bring the locking elements into locking engagement with each other, preventing counter-rotation of the closure. No threads or torque specifications are required.

A peristaltic piston pump driven by a dedicated pump cam disposed on a camshaft of an engine. A plurality of valve-opening cams are disposed along the camshaft. The pump cam has a plurality of lobes equal in number to the number of valve cams and each pump lobe is disposed at 180&#xb0; from a valve cam lobe such that the camshaft valve torque and secondary oil pump camshaft torque partially cancel, reducing overall camshaft torque oscillation. The pump includes a lost-motion shuttle and spring to permit continuous response of the pump to the cam.

Method and apparatus for reducing oscillatory camshaft torque in an internal combustion engine

A two-step roller finger follower including an elongate body having side walls defining coaxially disposed shaft orifices, a pallet end and a socket end interconnecting with the side walls to define a slider arm aperture, and a latch channel. The socket end is mountable to an hydraulic lash adjuster, and the pallet end is matable with a valve stem. A slider arm for engaging a high-lift cam lobe is disposed in the slider arm aperture and has a first end pivotably mounted to the pallet end of the body and the second end forming a slider tip for engaging an activation/deactivation latch. The latch is slidably disposed in the latch channel, and the latch has a nose section for selectively engaging the slider tip. A spool-shaped roller having first and second roller elements fixedly attached to the shaft is rotatably disposed in the shaft orifices, the roller being adapted to follow the surface motion of low-lift cam lobes. Preferably, the shaft is journalled in roller or needle bearings which extend between and through the first and second shaft orifices, being thus exposed to normal copious oil flow through the RFF.

A roller finger follower (RFF) wherein the shaft of the roller bearing is restrained in the follower finger by the overhead cam. Ends of the shaft are positioned in place in the follower finger by notches formed in the side walls of the follower finger. The notches restrain the shaft from axial movement. The cam in position over the RFF keeps the shaft nested in the notches. Further restraining means are disclosed to keep the shaft loosely nested in the notches in the follower finger before the cam is installed in position.

The present invention is a unique sequential process for treating carbon and alloy steels to improve resistance to tribological stresses while reducing conventional processing time required to obtain articles having a similar hardness. This process comprises carburizing or carbonitriding the article, tempering the carburized or carbonitrided article, net-shaping (machining) the tempered article, and plasma (ion) nitriding the tempered article for a significantly reduced period of time versus conventional plasma (ion) nitriding.

Carbon and alloy steels thermochemical treatments

An improved direct acting hydraulic valve lifter (DAHVL) has features including reduced dead oil storage with lower mass and faster filling, improved air venting, internal oil recirculation and targeted oil supply that combine to reduce the presence of air in the lifter. Foam filling and baffle reconfiguration are included among means for reducing stored oil volume which can also improve the follower cylinder support. Means for venting along the piston and cylinder of the lifter are shown. The various features combine to limit air intake and to more quickly expel air which does enter the lifter.

Direct acting hydraulic valve lifter

A direct acting hydraulic valve lifter features in a preferred embodiment a follower assembled with a thin wall metal shell and a light plastic baffle to support a lash adjusting hydraulic element assembly. An inlet riser chamber has sufficient cross section to minimize oil flow restriction in cold oil conditions. Dead space between the shell and baffle is filled with a strong lightweight foam to support and retain the baffle and displace oil for low mass.

Low mass direct acting hydraulic valve lifter

Low mass hydraulic and mechanical valve lifters are shown and described. The lifters are of oblong configuration for reduced mass, with straight or narrowed sides connecting longitudinally spaced ends having depending semi-cylindrical end walls that are received in similarly shaped end portions of lifter gallery openings to absorb all longitudinal and lateral side loads. The lifters are preferably made by investment casting of steel alloys. The investment casting permits the use of thin semi-cylindrical walls at each end of the valve lifters which also have internal reinforcing ribs extending on their undersides.
