Spin on disposable filters are useful in removing contaminates from the fluid of fluid systems. Preventing axial elongation of the filter due to fluid pressure therein requires the use of thicker elements, thereby increasing the manufacturing cost. The subject twist on disposable filter includes a twist-lock connector device which captures a portion of a housing between cooperating members of the twist-lock connector device. The area of imbalance caused by seal placement is greatly reduced by the twist-lock connector device, thereby minimizing the forces tending to cause axial elongation of the filter. This permits the use of less expensive materials therein and simplifies the manufacturing procedure.

Spin on disposable filters are useful in removing contaminants from the fluid of fluid systems. Preventing axial elongation of the filter due to fluid pressure therein requires the use of thicker elements, thereby increasing the manufacturing cost. The subject twist or disposable filter includes a twist-lock connector device which captures a portion of a housing between interconnected members of the twist-lock connector device. The twist-lock connector device is adapted for axial sealing engagement with a mounting device and minimizes the area of imbalance, thereby minimizing the forces tending to cause axial elongation of the filter. This permits the use of less expensive materials therein and simplifies the manufacturing procedure.

An automatic wrapping apparatus for wrapping an external tape support about a filter element includes an indexable turret assembly having a plurality of filter element clamps rotatably mounted at spaced radial positions on the indexable turret. Means are provided at one of the radial positions for rotating a filter element clamp about a longitudinal axis. The wrapping apparatus also includes means for selectively varying the position of the strand of tape along the longitudinal axis during rotation of the clamp. Further, the apparatus includes means for severing the strand of tape and wrapping the severed ends about a respective pleated filter assembly. A method for wrapping an external tape support about a pleated filter element includes clamping a pleated filer between opposed face surfaces, contacting one end of a continuous strand of adhesive coated tape with an outer pleated edge surface of the pleated filter assembly carried in the clamp fixture, rotating the filter element assembly about a longitudinal axis and simultaneously move the position of the taped material in one direction along the longitudinal axis to spirally wrap the tape externally about the pleated filter element. After wrapping, the filter element is indexed to a second radial position and the trailing strand of tape is severed, producing a loose end which is pressed into contact with the outer ede surfaces of the pleated filter element. The present invention is particularly useful in the automatic assembly of cylindrical filter cartridge elements.

An automatic assembly machine for assembling a pleated filter material and a perforate hollow core member includes a wrapping station, an adhesive application station and a clamping station. A conveyor moves the filter material and the core member together as a unit through the wrapping station and the adhesive application station. The clamping station both clamps the seam to which adhesive has been applied for a period of time sufficient to permit curing of the adhesive joint, and simultaneously conveys the filter material and core member assembly. A method for assembling a pleated filter material and a perforate hollow core member includes the steps of conveying both the filter material and the hollow core member to a point where they come in mutual contact, supporting one of the members on the other, and simultaneously conveying the filter material and core member sequentially through a wrapping station and an adhesive application station. At the wrapping station the filter material is formed about the core member and the free ends of opposed end pleats are brought into juxtaposition. An adhesive material is applied to selected apposite surfaces at the adhesive application station. Following the application of adhesive material the apposite surfaces are clamped together for a period of time sufficient to permit curing of the adhesively joined surfaces and, simultaneously therewith, the assembled elements are conveyed as a unit.

A body having rubber material thereon is positioned on a lower member, and an upper member is moved toward the lower member, such relative movement causing tread-forming shoes to move to inward positions to form a tread on the rubber material. As an alternative, the upper and lower members may be brought together, and rubber material may be injected into position to have a tread formed thereon. Upon movement of the upper and lower member relatively apart, the rubber material is made to remain in contact with the shoes, and the body is removed, whereupon an annular core having rubber material thereon is disposed on the lower member, and the upper and lower members are again brought together to deposit the rubber material in contact with the shoes onto the rubber material on the core.

A seal arrangement for an oval tire and rim is disclosed including an oval tire having an annular base with a radially inner mounting surface and an air inlet passage therethrough, a supporting rim having a radially outer mounting surface disposed in facing relation with the inner mounting surface of the tire and with a valve opening therethrough alignable with the inlet passage, and a raised sealing device is localizably associated with one of the mounting surfaces for preventing the escape of pressurized air from the inlet passage and outwardly between the tire and the rim.

An expandable tire rim arrangement is disclosed including a transversely split tire supporting rim having an outer peripheral tire engaging surface, an inner peripheral surface, and relatively circumferentially movable ends disposable between a rim diameter reducing position for ease of insertion of the supporting rim axially into a tire and a rim diameter increasing position, and a rim expanding and wheel mounting assembly having diametric dimensions somewhat larger than the diameter of the inner peripheral surface of the supporting rim when in its diameter reducing position and being axially slidably insertable into the supporting rim for tightly expanding it against the tire.
