This disclosure describes a chopper mixer telemetry circuit for use in a wireless receiver. The receiver may be located in an implantable medical device (IMD) or external programmer. The chopper mixer telemetry circuit may include a mixer amplifier that operates as a synchronous demodulator to provide selective extraction of wireless signals received from a transmitter while suppressing out-of-band noise that can undermine the reliability of the telemetry link between an IMD or programmer and another device. The mixer amplifier may utilize parallel signal paths to convert the received telemetry signal into an in-phase (I) signal component and a quadrature (Q) signal component and recombine the I and Q signal components to reconstruct the total signal independently of the phase mismatch between the transmitter and receiver. Each signal path may include a chopper-stabilized mixer amplifier that amplifies telemetry signals within a desired band while suppressing out-of-band noise.

Chopper mixer telemetry circuit

Implantable devices and related systems utilize coils or coil portions of a coil for inductive telemetry at one frequency and recharge at another frequency. The coils or coil portions are included in one or more tank circuits that share at least one node between the coils or coil portions. The recharge application may be provided with variations for aspects including power management and rectification. The telemetry application may be provided with variations for aspects including receiver connectivity for the downlink and coil driving for the uplink.

Implantable medical devices and systems having dual frequency inductive telemetry and recharge

Techniques associated with a universal recharging device for recharging a power source of implantable medical devices (IMDs). The recharging device includes an interface to allow an antenna assembly to be removably coupled. The antenna assembly has a primary coil and a corresponding sense coil. The sense coil has a configuration that is selected based on the configuration of the primary coil. The sense coil is adapted to prevent voltage across the primary coil from exceeding a maximum voltage amplitude allowable with the recharging device. The maximum voltage amplitude may be selected based on a maximum magnetic field strength to which a patient is to be exposed. In one embodiment, the maximum voltage amplitude is programmable.

Universal recharging of an implantable medical device

A device includes a housing, a radio-frequency (RF) antenna, a ground plane, an inductive telemetry antenna, and a processing module. The RF antenna is associated with the housing. The ground plane of the RF antenna is within the housing. The inductive telemetry antenna is within the housing and is disposed over a portion of the ground plane. The processing module is within the housing and is configured to communicate with a medical device using at least one of the RF antenna and the inductive telemetry antenna.

Converter device for communicating with multiple medical devices

A device includes a housing and electronics disposed in the housing. A telemetry antenna is disposed in the housing and is operably coupled to the electronics. A shielding coil is disposed between the housing and the telemetry antenna. The shielding coil has a first end and a second end. The second end is electrically terminated in circuitry of the electronics.

A charging system for an implantable medical device having a secondary coil. The charging system includes an external power source having at least one primary coil, a modulation, circuit operatively coupled to the primary coil and capable of driving it in a manner characterized by a charging parameter, and a sensor in communication with the modulation circuit and capable of sensing a condition indicating a need to adjust the charging parameter during a charging process. The parameter may be varied so that data sensed by the sensor meets a threshold requirement, which may be based on a patient preference, a government regulation, a recommendation promulgated by a health authority and/or a requirement associated with another device carried by the patient. In one embodiment, the regulation dictates maximum magnetic field exposure, and a field limiting circuit is employed to adjust the charging process.

Closed loop long range recharging

A physiological monitoring or therapy delivery system includes autonomous, wirelessly linked, implantable devices located at different areas to sense physiologic signals and deliver therapy. At least one of the implantable devices can trigger synchronized action (e.g. data capture or therapy delivery) by other implantable devices via a telemetry link.

Telemetry-synchronized physiological monitoring and therapy delivery systems

An implantable medical device includes a control circuit for controlling the operation of the device and for obtaining physiological data from a patient in which the medical device is implanted. The implanted device also includes a communication circuit for transmitting the physiological data to an external device. A first power source is coupled to the control circuit and provides power to the control circuit. A second power source is coupled to the communication circuit and provides power to the communication circuit.

Implantable medical device with a dual power source

A method and system for programming settings of a medical device surgically implanted within a body of a patient. The system comprises a physician programmer, a patient programmer, an external neural stimulator, and a telemetry component being in communication with the implanted medical device, the external neural stimulator, and the physician programmer. The implantable medical device may be programmed using a two-phase process, a screening phase and an implant phase. During the screening phase, the physician and patient programmers may be used to roughly test the parameters of the stimulation to determine that the treatment therapy is efficacious. During the implant phase, the same physician and patient programmers may be used to fine tune the parameters of the stimulation.

Method and apparatus for programming an implantable medical device

An apparatus and method that will allow for external communication, via an external programmer, for positive device identification and for retrieval of device or patient information stored by an implantable medical device with a depleted power source. The external programmer will deliver energy to a secondary power source located inside the implanted device using RF telemetry sufficient to charge up the secondary power source, e.g., a small capacitor. The capacitor will charge up immediately within milliseconds. Once the secondary power source is sufficiently charged, it can be used to power up a controller having the stored information in the implantable medical device. Once the controller is operational, the implanted device will transmit device and patient information to the external programmer via RF telemetry.

Apparatus and method for allowing immediate retrieval for information and identification from an implantable medical device having a depleted power source

An apparatus and method for a telemetry system that automatically selects a symmetric modulation protocol configuration for telemetry communication between medical devices and programmers used in providing patient treatment. The standardized telemetry protocol will use the symmetric modulation protocol configuration to establish a downlink or uplink connection. The standardized telemetry protocol will automatically select the appropriate modulation protocol configuration depending on the modulation format and data rate capability best suited for the components needing to communicate via telemetry.

Telemetry modulation protocol system for medical devices

Downlink telemetry for an implantable medical device includes controlling downlink energy by generating a downlink strength signal representative of the strength of one or more downlink control bursts transmitted from an external communication device and received at the receiver of the implantable medical device. The peak amplitude of modulated downlink data bursts is controlled by adjusting the burst duration of the ramped envelope of such downlink data bursts as a function of the downlink strength signal.
