A multifunction high frequency integrated circuit structure and circuit configuration includes a resonator or oscillator circuit coupled to a buffer amplifier by way of a stripline coupler. The resonator circuit includes an input terminating region which is coupled to three input terminating ports. A first one of the input terminating ports is coupled directly to the resonator for either being electrically connected to a selected signal source or load, a second one of the input terminating ports is electrically connected to either a fixed or variable potential source, and the remaining input terminating port is coupled to the resonator input terminating region through another stripline coupler, and is intended to be electrically connected to another selected signal source. Depending upon the choice of circuit components and signal sources connected to the input terminating ports, the multifunction high frequency integrated circuit may serve as a voltage controlled oscillator, low phase noise oscillator, direct up/down frequency signal converter, or injection locked oscillator.

An array of unit oscillators interconnected with one another in that the transistors of the oscillators are connected to common lines. Separate lines in proximity provide coupling capacitance for feedback to sustain the oscillation of the unit oscillators. The separate lines also form a grid which results in an antenna for emanation of the oscillators, radiation The array can effectively function at extremely high frequencies (i.e., greater than 30 GHz). The array is specially designed to accommodate monolithic implementation.

Power combining oscillator

A mixer includes a local oscillator (LO) matching network having an LO input port, an RF matching network also having an input port and an IF filter which provides an IF output from the mixer. A FET having a gate, drain and source operates at the center of the mixer. A resonant loop is connected between the drain and gate of the FET. The gate of the FET is connected to an output of the LO matching network. The drain of the FET is connected to an output of the RF matching network. The source of the FET is connected to an input of the IF filter. The resonant loop may incorporate a DC blocking capacitor which does not function as part of the resonant loop, but which serves to block DC allowing the drain and gate of the FET to be biased independently.
