An apparatus is disclosed for permitting or preventing a panel from closing an opening within a wall. A hinge secures the panel to the wall for pivoting the panel relative to the opening. The apparatus comprises an inverted generally u-shaped frame defining a slot for positioning to the panel. A bar member includes a first end and a second end. A fulcrum pivot is interposed between the first end and the second end for pivotably mounting the bar member to the inverted generally u-shaped frame. The fulcrum pivot pivots the bar member between a generally vertical position and a generally horizontal position. The bar member pivots to the generally vertical position for disengaging the second end from the wall for permitting the panel to close the opening of the wall. The bar member pivots into the generally horizontal position for engaging the stopper end with the wall for preventing the panel from closing the opening of the wall.

A multi-user system for creating and maintaining a knowledge base is implemented on a variety of computer systems, including single-user personal computers, networked personal computers, and data communications networks, including the Internet. The system has a graphic user interface which can be easily learned by non-programmers. The knowledge base is displayed as a hierarchical multiplicity of nodes, in which each node is related to one or more superior nodes. Title of text, rules, references, and attributes associated with each node are displayed, and may be modified. Simulation is used to verify the knowledge base once generated. Data may be extracted from the bases in the form of hard-copy books, databases for downloading into Web browsers, and databases for downloading into hand-held computers including a multiplicity of grids, and a multiplicity of branches in the form of a logic tree. The user may choose one of the alternative display formats, and the hierarchy can be displayed in either collapsed view or expanded view. Interference between two or more users accessing the system concurrently is prevented by a locking and authorization subsystem, which also prevents unauthorized access to the environment. The system provides an organization of workflow into a multiplicity of development stages. Each such stage has associated with it an authorization level, developers working on the system concurrently are limited by these levels to access only particular stages and levels of development.

Multi-user system for creating and maintaining a medical-decision-making knowledge base

The invention is a tester that uses a capacitive probe to test whether components that have multiple power and/or ground pins are correctly oriented relative to the signal-pin tracks on a circuit board. The tester connects, to the signal-pin track to which the pin under test is connected, a test-signal source that supplies to that pin a relatively high-voltage test signal. The tester actively guards the pin by applying to the remaining component pins, through the tester scanning system and its internal resistance, a signal that has the same voltage as that sensed by the capacitive probe. If the component is oriented such that one of the multiple power or ground pins is connected to the signal-pin track to which the test signal is applied, the test signal appears also at the other power or ground pins, since these pins are interconnected by a low impedance path through the component. The signals on these interconnected pins are capacitively coupled through the component lead frame to the capacitive probe, which senses a much higher voltage than it does when the test signal appears at a single signal pin. Accordingly, the tester determines if a power or ground pin is connected to the signal-pin track by comparing the voltage at the capacitive probe with a predetermined threshold. The tester may also determine how much the component is misoriented by testing each of the pins and comparing the measured voltages with rotation patterns, which are determined by mapping the thresholds associated with the pins of a properly oriented component to the pin locations to which the pins may be rotated if the component were incorrectly oriented.

Test system for determining the orientation of components on a circuit

A bus arbitration algorithm using round robin and variable packet counts. In addition, each node is assigned a maximum packet size which can be adjusted by the operating system. The round robin determines which node will be granted the bus based on priority on a serial wrap-around list. The packet count is one factor in determining how long the node granted the bus may use it. The maximum packet size is a second factor in determining the permitted duration on the bus.

Bus arbitration algorithm and apparatus

A technique for starting up a data processing system in which a 'basic' or 'kernel' instruction set is stored in an auxiliary store and transferred to the processor's control store in start-up. The kernel instruction set in used to execute an initialization program which identifies an I/O device in which a microcode local program and a desired microcode file are stored. No microcode load program is transferred to the processor's main memory, using the kernel instructions and the desired microcode file is then transferred in selected blocks from the I/O device to the main memory and there to the microcode control store. The microinstructions of the desired microcode file then can be used to load appropriate operating system software so that the overall processor is then ready for use in whatever applications are desirable.
