The present invention provides a method of inhibiting the formation of infectious herpes virus particles, particularly infectious herpes simplex virus (HSV) particles, in a host cell. The method involves administering an effective amount of a hydroxylated tolan, particularly a polyhydroxylated tolan, to a herpes virus infected host cell. The present invention also provides a method of treating a herpes virus infection, particularly an HSV infection. The method comprises administering a topical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a hydroxylated tolan to a herpes virus-infected site. The present invention also relates to a topical composition for treating a herpes virus infection selected from the group consisting of an HSV infection, a cytomegalovirus infection, and a varicella zoster virus infection. The method involves administering an effective amount of a poly-hydroxylated stilbene, particularly resveratrol, to a herpes virus infected host cell. The present invention also provides a method of reducing or inhibiting the growth ofandin vitro and in vivo. The method comprises administering a composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a tri-hydroxylated stilbene to a growth surface which has come into contact or could come into contact with the bacterium.

Methods for treating subjects infected with a herpes virus

The present invention provides a method of inhibiting the formation of pseudorabies particles in a host cell. The method involves administering an effective amount of a poly-hydroxylated stilbene, particularly resveratrol, to a herpes virus infected host cell. The present invention also provides a method of reducing or inhibiting the growth of and in vitro and in vivo. The method comprises administering a composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a tri-hydroxylated stilbene to a growth surface which has come into contact or could come into contact with the bacterium.

Method of inhibiting formation of infectious microorganisms

The present invention provides a method of inhibiting the formation of infectious herpes virus particles, particularly infectious herpes simplex virus (HSV) particles, in a host cell. The method involves administering an effective amount of a hydroxylated stilbene, particularly resveratrol, to a herpes virus infected host cell. The present invention also provides a method of treating a herpes virus infection, particularly an HSV infection. The method comprises administering a topical composition comprising a therapeutically effective amount of a hydroxylated stilbene to a herpes virus-infected site. The present invention also relates to a topical composition for treating a herpes virus infection selected from the group consisting of an HSV infection, a cytomegalovirus infection, and a varicella zoster virus infection. The present invention also provides a method of reducing the cytopathic effect of HSV on mammalian cells. The method involves administering resveratrol to the host cell, either in vitro or in vivo, in an amount sufficient to inhibit replication of HSV-1 or HSV-2 within the host cell.

Method of inhibiting formation of infectious herpes virus particles

A method utilizing compositions for topical application which are adapted for the prevention and treatment of viral infections such as Herpes, AIDS and other envelope virus infections are disclosed. The compositions of the present invention produce a synergistic anti-viral effect when used in combination. The formulation contains a humectant such as sorbitol, glycerol, or other comparable compound in the range of 20-80% w/v final concentration, which facilitates structural and/or functional three dimensional disruption or disorientation of the viral envelope. The activation of the destruction of the envelope and subsequent death of the envelope virus is then achieved using combination of inorganic monovalent anions, nonionic detergents and anionic detergents. These monovalent anions can include sodium bicarbonate, sodium thiocyanate, sodium fluoride and sodium chloride at about 0.5 to 5% w/v final concentration; nonionic detergents such as Tween 20 at concentrations of about 0.1% to 3% v/v, ethanol up to about 15% v/v, and other antimicrobial agents such as chlorhexidine or comparable basic substances at concentrations from about 0.01 to 0.2% v/v. The formulation may also include anionic surfactants, flavor and water added to 100%.

Antiviral composition and method

A composition for reducing the transmissability of viral infection from a subject infected therewith which comprises a topically applicable, pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and a viricidally effective amount of a polypeptide of between 24 and 500 aminoacid residues comprising at least 24 residues of L-Histidine.
