A data received is provided with DC restoration circuitry for correcting the DC level of received multi-level data signals. A DC shift detection circuit detects whether the received DC level multi-level signals has shifted due to a predominance of one of the data levels in the data stream. A correction circuit responds to the shift detection circuit by applying a corrective bias to an isolation transformer. Alternatively, the correction circuit applies a corrective bias to the received signals within the receiver circuit.

Data receiver having bias restoration

Improved connectors for optically coupling a fiber optic transmission line and an opto-electronic device electrically interfaced to a substrate. The improved connectors include the opto-electronic device being mounted on the substrate, such as a printed circuit board, and means for mounting the fiber optic transmission line to the substrate such that the operative axis of the opto-electronic device is substantially not coincidental with the light transmission axis of the fiber optic transmission line. The connectors also require light bending means in operative optical association with said opto-electronic device for directing along the light transmission axis of the fiber optic transmission line at least a portion of the light emitted from said opto-electronic device or for directing along the operative axis of said opto-electronic device at least a portion of the light emitted from said fiber optic transmission line. Applicants have discovered that a connector provided in accordance with the present invention overcomes many of the difficulties associated with prior art connectors of this type.

Light bending devices

A data transmitter circuit includes a pseudoternary conversion circuit for converting a binary logic signal to a differential pseudoternary signal having symmetric rise and fall characteristics. The output of the pseudoternary conversion circuit is filtered and passed to an electrically conductive medium via an isolation transformer. The conversion circuit includes a symmetric arrangement of toggle circuits which respond to transitions in respective complementary binary signals constituting a differential binary input signal. Voltage dividers are connected to the output terminals of the toggle circuits for providing three levels of output voltages in response to the logical states of the toggle circuits.

Multi-level data transmitter

A device for providing an optical feedback path for a receiver comprises a header including a base having a major surface and first, second and third leads. The first and second leads extend through the base to form first and second posts on the major surface of the base and the third lead is electrically connected to the base. The portion of the first and second leads extending through the base are surrounded by electrical insulation so that the first and second leads are electrically insulated from the base. A submount comprising a flat insulating block with a layer of gold on its top and bottom surfaces is solder-bonded to the major surface of the base and the gold layer on the top surface of the submount is wire-bonded to the base. An LED is solder-bonded to the top surface of the submount and wire-bonded to the first post on the major surface of the base, the LED emitting optical radiation when it is forward biased. A P-I-N diode is also solder-bonded to the top surface submount and wire-bonded to the second post on the major surface of the base of the header. The P-I-N diode detects the optical radiation emitted by the LED. In order to insure that the light emitted by the LED is detected by the P-I-N diode as is required to establish a feedback path for a receiver, the standard header cover with a glass window is utilized. However, to form an optically reflecting surface, the interior surface of the glass window is illustratively metallized by platinum sputtering followed by gold plating.
