Separation of the components of liquid mixtures is achieved by contacting a liquid mixture with a nonporous membrane having a fluoropolymer selectively permeable layer and imposing a pressure gradient across the membrane from feed side to permeate side. Unusually high transmembrane flux is obtained when the membrane is subjected to one or more process conditions prior to separation. These include (a) leaving some residual amount of membrane casting solvent in the membrane, and (b) contacting the membrane with a component of the mixture to be separated for a duration effective to saturate the membrane with the component.

Organic fluid permeation through fluoropolymer membranes

A cyclic process for controlling environmental emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) from vapor recovery in storage and dispensing operations of liquids maintains a vacuum in the storage tank ullage. In one of a two-part cyclic process ullage vapor is discharged through a vapor recovery system in which VOC are stripped from vented gas with a selectively gas permeable membrane. In the other part, the membrane is inoperative while gas pressure rises in the ullage. Ambient air is charged to the membrane separation unit during the latter part of the cycle.

Cyclic membrane separation process

A method of raising the concentration of a liquid mixture utilizes osmotic distillation to transfer a volatile liquid component from the mixture in contact with one side of a nonporous, preferably high free volume, gas permeable membrane to a strip solution in contact with the other side of the membrane. Due to its nonporous nature the gas permeable membrane resists penetration and wetting by oily components that may be present in the feed mixture. Similarly, occlusion of the membrane by solids is resisted. Preferably, an amorphous copolymer of perfluoro-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole is useful for the gas permeable membrane. Osmotic distillation utilizing such high free volume, nonporous gas permeable membranes can concentrate difficult liquid mixtures such as pulpy fruit juices and especially, limonene-containing juices, for example, orange juice. The process can be operated at high flux for long durations between membrane cleanings. Additionally, less contamination of the strip solution into the feed mixture occurs to provide a high quality concentrate.

This invention utilizes the partial pressure difference of alcohol in two areas separated by a microporous membrane wherein one area contains a solution of alcohol and at least one other liquid and the other area contains predominately only the other liquid to cause the alcohol to migrate through the membrane.

Process for removing alcohol from liquids

A gas permeable material comprising a material having continuous pores through it, in which the pore interiors are coated with an amorphous copolymer of tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoro-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxole.

Dioxole/TFE copolymer composites

Radiation resistant composites made of adjacent layers of a microporous hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene layer and one or more supporting layers made of woven metal material or woven synthetic organic polymeric material and a microporous hydrophobic polytetrafluoroethylene membrane are described. A coated product is provided that is comprised of a substrate and a coating comprised of a microporous scaffold material having a high void volume and open, interconnecting void microstructure, the scaffold material having a layer of a selected polyurethane thereon which extends in the voids. The coated product has good barrier properties with respect to bacteria, viruses, and air-borne particulate.

The gridwork of tubes is sized and configured to leave the laminar flow of the air stream substantially undisturbed.
