Analyte arrays such as solutes in a slab-shaped gel following electrophoresis, and particularly arrays that are in excess of 3 cm square and up to 25 cm square and higher, are imaged at distances of 5 cm or less by either forming sub-images of the entire array and stitching together the sub-images by computer-based stitching technology, or by using an array of thin-film photoresponsive elements that is coextensive with the analyte array to form a single image of the array.

Provided is a method for determining one or more kinetic parameters of binding between a first binding member and a second binding member. The method includes adsorbing the first binding member to a surface at a plurality of microspots. The second binding member is then presented to the first binding member at each of the microspots, there being a plurality of combinations of first binding member surface density and second binding member concentration among the plurality of microspots. Data indicative of a binding reaction between the first of microspots are then obtained and analyzed so as to obtain one or more kinetic parameters of the binding between the first and second binding members. Also provided is a system for carrying out the method. A method for localizing a molecular species at microspots on a surface, and a probe array produced by the method are also provided.

A gel enclosure and buffer tank for vertical slab gel electrophoresis are disclosed. The gel enclosure is formed from two flat plates, one of which contains angled troughs extending off to one side to serve as extensions of the sample wells, thereby increasing the volumetric capacity of each sample well, and improving the ease of loading it with sample. The buffer tank is constructed in such a manner as to hold one flat plate of the gel enclosure in contact with a flat heat transfer wall of the buffer tank, with cooling applied to the outside of the wall by thermoelectric means. Buffer solution below the gel enclosure is also cooled by the cooling wall, and bubbles generated at an electrode, also positioned below the gel enclosure, agitate the cooled buffer solution, extending the cooling effect over the entire surface of the other flat plate of the gel enclosure.
