A dam, or barrier, structure is moved along the edge, or corner, of a workpiece to control the flow limits of molten material of arc welding. The dam structure provides a dimentionally stable groove at the edge of the workpiece surface into which is received granulated flux and positions the body of the flux along the edge, or corner, of the workpiece surface to function as a mold for the molten material, and, thereby, prevent the falling of the flowing material from the surface. The dam structure has the specific form of a continuous tread of segments which advances around parallel rollers to reform the retaining groove structure opposite the arc operation on the surface of the workpiece.

Flux dam for submerged arc welding

Submerged arc strip cladding of the workpiece is carried out on a workpiece which has a surface inclined to the horizontal transverse to the direction of the welding progress. The flux burden is skewed in a zone overlaying the molten metal area with a heavier burden being located on the downhill side of the weld than on the uphill side.

Clad welding on an inclined surface

Granulated welding flux is supplied under fluid pressure from a reservoir mounted at a convenient location for reloading. The reservoir is connected to an elevated vacuum tank. Recovered excess flux is also brought up to the vacuum tank, both sources of flux maintaining a predetermined level of flux within the vacuum tank. A conduit from the vacuum tank provides gravity feed of flux from the tank to a lower divider box from which a plurality of conduits deliver flux to the traveling welding arc from behind and in front of the arc between the tip of the welding electrode and the work piece.

Welding flux closed loop system

The disclosure of the present application relates to an improved method of open-arc welding. According to the present method, the outer shield of a double-shield welding system consists of a stream of gas formed in a shield concentric with the inner shield. This method is distinguished by the fact that atmospheric air may be used as the outer shield gas because the outer-shield velocity is so regulated and so positioned as to prevent the air from being drawn into the weld area, the outer shield gas velocity nearly approximating the inner shield gas velocity.

Dual-gas shielding method

A method and apparatus for strip cladding into a corner while magnetically agitating the weld deposit. The clad strip is angled away from the corner in the plane of the electrode strip, and means are provided for using the corner-forming obstruction as a pole piece for the electromagnet. The welding head can thereby be positioned to clad into the corner without interference from an obstructing pole piece or from the welding head itself.

Angled strip cladding system

An apparatus for automatically seal welding a tube to the inside surface of a header. A mandrel concentrically supports the apparatus from the tube to be welded and carries a rotating support which in turn carries a welding torch. Electric motors for rotating and oscillating the torch are located with their axis parallel to that of the mandrel. Weld spatter shields protect the interior of the tube and also the various drive mechanisms.

Automatic seal welding apparatus

An improved method and apparatus for the submerged arc surfacing of metallic work pieces with metal electrode strips melting in an electric arc while forming welding beads upon the work piece. The apparatus comprises a work piece which is to be surfaced, an electrode strip comprising the cladding material, means operative to move the strip and work piece relative to one another, a DC source, the opposite poles of which are connected to the electrode strip and the work piece, an electro-magnetic means having poles of opposite polarity operatively positioned at opposite sides of the electrode strip and adjacent the pool of molten flux and molten metal lying behind the electrode strip. The current to the electro-magnetic means is pulsed to thereby cause an agitation of the molten slag and weld deposit thereby resulting in a weld bead of extremely high quality, uniform thickness and also a defect-free tie-in between adjacent weld beads.

Apparatus and method for submerged arc strip cladding of metallic work

A method and apparatus is disclosed for feeding welding flux to both the leading and trailing sides of the strip electrode used in a submerged arc strip cladding process. In order to prevent distortion of the bead shape the pressure due to the weight of the flux burden is controlled to be less in the region of the molten metal and slag pools lying directly behind the welding arc. The flux burden is caused to increase from a first depth directly behind the strip to a maximum depth at the trailing edge of the weld crater region where the quantity of liquid metal and liquid slag is a minimum.

A method and apparatus for removing a hollow tube from a tube sheet in which the tube is held by expansive forces in the tube. A GTA arc is established between an electrode and the interior tube wall. The arc parameters are such that it melts partially through the tube wall and the arc is then translated in a desired pattern of movement along the length of the tube contained in the tube sheet. Upon re-solidfication of the melted part of the tube the compressive forces of solidification shrinkage and thermal contraction result in a reduction of the tube diameter. Apparatus is disclosed for carrying out the method which, through a dual drive arrangement, is capable of producing a variety of weld head translation paths.
