A fastener is provided which is adapted to be at least partially embedded within a intake manifold. The fastener comprises a first threaded section and a second section. The second section has a first end part defining a shoulder for making contact with a first portion of a mold during formation of the workpiece and a second end part having an outer end face for making contact with a second portion of the mold during formation of the workpiece. The second section further includes a crush-boss extending outwardly from the outer end face for contacting the second portion of the mold and thereby ensuring that the second section of the fastener is compressively engaged by the first and second portions of the mold during formation of the workpiece.

Fastener for a molded workpiece

A fastener is provided which is adapted to be at least partially embedded within a molded workpiece. The fastener comprises a first threaded section and a second section. The second section has a first end part defining a shoulder for making contact with a first portion of a mold during formation of the workpiece and a second end part having an outer end face for making contact with a second portion of the mold during formation of the workpiece. The second section further includes a crush-boss extending outwardly from the outer end face for contacting the second portion of the mold and thereby ensuring that the second section of the fastener is compressively engaged by the first and second portions of the mold during formation of the workpiece.

In a connector for joining a pair of optical fibers in end-to-end relationship along a straight axis, a fiber receiving member is mounted in a cylindrical glass sleeve intermediate a pair of glass fiber guides which each have an orifice for guiding a respective fiber along the straight axis.

Optical fiber connector

An in-line splice case assembly includes a pair of end plugs exhibiting axially disposed apertures for mating optical fibers and fiber wands associated therewith. A pair of elongated, rigid torque bars join the end plugs and support at least one, but preferably two, rotatably attached, resilient clips, the clips for securing appropriate elastomeric fiber splices. A substantially cylindrical housing encloses the end plugs, the torque bars, and the clips. The housing exhibits an interior surface having threaded portions at opposite ends thereof, complementary to threaded portions of a pair of end caps threaded thereinto.

Fiber optic in-line splice case assembly

A housing for a fiber optic splice, in particular, for a splice of the glass tubular type, includes mating top and bottom sections. The bottom section is characterized by two sets of four chamfered teeth positioned at either end and along the sides of a primary portion. A trough is formed in the primary portion so as to accommodate the contours of the particular splice to be encountered. The top section includes a center portion with walls extending upwards from both sides. Elevated members extend upward from the surface at each end of the center portion so as to provide, in concert with the chamfered teeth of the bottom section, an aperture through which a glass fiber may be inserted. Tapered tabs in the walls of the top section lock into longitudinal cavities cut out of the bottom section so as to maintain a relatively fixed relationship between the two sections.

Housing for a fiber optic splice

A fiber optic splice assembly comprises a hermaphroditic splice housing comprised of mating housing halves. Each of the halves provides a first cavity for a ferrule crimp and both of the halves, when mated, define a second cavity for an elastomeric splice. The splice includes a metallic sleeve and an elastomeric insert, the insert preferably offers an opening having a triangular cross-section so that contact is made with a glass fiber at three points on the circumference of the fiber. The ferrule crimps, one is provided for each of the two fibers to be spliced, also include an elastomeric insert and a ferrule crimped about the insert so as to provide strain relief for the glass fiber when the fiber is enclosed in the housing. The insert assumes a configuration dictated by the particular optical fiber cable configuration encountered. The housing halves are characterized by substantially identical contours and are therefore interchangeable. In particular, the housing halves contain a locking portion comprised of an integumentary layer with circumferential slots and an interior layer with mating locking flanges.

A hermaphroditic housing for a fiber optic splice comprises substantially identical, and therefore interchangeable, mating sections. Each of the sections exhibit a substantially tubular contour and is characterized by a primary portion having an orifice at one end for the insertion of an optical fiber, a tubular locking portion having a diameter greater than the diameter of the primary portion, and a tapered portion disposed between and joining the primary portion and the gripping portion. The housing provides a trisectional, substantially cylindrical cavity comprising a first section having a diameter appropriate for the insertion of a ferrule crimp, a second section having a diameter greater than the diameter of the first section and appropriate for the insertion of an elastomeric splice, and an intermediate section disposed between the first section and the second section and having a diameter greater than the diameter of the first section but less than the diameter of the third section. The locking portion is comprised on an interior layer and an integumentary which extends a finite distance beyond the interior layer. The integumentary layer exhibits a pair of diametrically opposed slots while the interior layer comprises a pair of complementary, diametrically opposed, locking flanges.

Fiber optic ferrule crimp

A connector which forms an optical fiber to a fiber receiving member along a straight axis includes a slidable member having a camming means for holding the fiber when the fiber is moved toward the receiving member to complete an optical connection.

The work tray assembly includes a rectangular PVC board from which a first pair of slots, for the insertion of a splice platform, has been perforated. A second pair of slots, orthogonal to the first, is adapted to accommodate an elongated splice housing. A plurality of arcuately-shaped, flexible plastic clips are mounted in the board for the retention of cladded glass fibers. The board also supports at least one pipelike ring for grasping a vial containing chemicals required to strip and clean the cladded glass fibers. A pair of cable clamps positioned on opposite sides of the board at the extremities of a virtual center line drawn through the first pair of slots positions and supports fiber optic cables brought onto the work tray assembly and across the platform in anticipation of a stripping, cleaning and splicing procedure.

Splice work tray assembly

An end plug is characterized by a pair of rounded surfaces complementary to the interior of a splice case housing and a pair of flat surfaces to which torque bars are fastened. The end plugs exhibit two pairs of apertures extending in an axial direction the length of the end plugs. The larger diameter apertures accommodate the coated glass fibers which may be surrounded by woven protective layers. In practice the protective layers are dressed back and away from the fibers, positioned in lateral cutout portions, and secured by a pair of tie-off screws. In addition, the fiber optic cable will be customarily provided with a reinforcing 'wand' running the length of the cable. The wand may be comprised of a strand of steel, fiberglass, copper or other material of suitable tensile strength. The wands are to be dressed through smaller diameter apertures and severed at the other side of the end plugs. A pair of fasteners is provided each of the end plugs in order to secure the wands thereto. The fasteners are in the form of a pair of setscrews that are threaded into bores extending generally radially from the rounded surface toward the interior of the end plugs.

End plug for a fiber optic in-line splice case assembly

A splice casing assembly for an elongated splice housing assembly and associated fiber optic cables includes a mounting insert disposed within a substantially tubular casing. A particularized mounting insert is characterized by a rectangular platform portion for supporting the splice housing assembly and by disklike end portions for positioning the insert within the tubular casing. Each of a pair of casing plugs comprises a threaded portion for fastening the plug at an end of the tubular casing and a tapered portion into which a fiber optic connector is threaded. Each of the connectors, a pair are included, comprises a threaded portion, a hexagonal gripping portion, a major cylindrical portion, and a minor cylindrical portion disposed between the hexagonal gripping portion and the major cylindrical portion. The casing assembly is configured so that fiber optic cables, supported by the connectors, may be routed through the connector, through the plug casings and into the splice housing assembly.

Splice casing assembly

An apparatus for terminating a plurality of conductors to a connector includes an elongated frame having a connector holding fixture at one end and a carriage mounted for sliding movement toward the fixture for effecting termination of the connector. Movement of the carriage is effected by a beam having a pivotable joint mounted intermediate the carriage and fixture so that movement of the pivotable joint in direction normal to the longitudinal direction of the frame moves the carriage toward and away from the fixture member.
