According to an example computer-implemented method, user input is received indicating N regions within a data range of a data variable, where N is greater than or equal to three. A slide control is displayed representing the data range and the regions within the data range. The slide control includes N&#x2212;1 sliders, with each slider representing a boundary between two of the regions. Responsive to movement of a selected slider, its associated boundary is reset. A determination is made of which one of the regions within the data range a received data variable value falls within. Based on the determination and the boundaries, the following items are displayed separately from the slide control: a graph of the data range that indicates which region the received data variable falls within, and a percentage value that indicates where the received data variable value falls within the data range.

The slider defines a selected area of an image, which is then displayed. The scope of the selected area corresponds to the size of the slider. The resizable slider is then resized by a user's direct manipulation, e.g. by a click-and-drag technique, to redefine the selected area, which is then displayed. The scope of the redefined selected area corresponds to the size of the resized slider. A second command is then received from the operator to copy or cut the selected portion into a clipboard in a memory of the computer, wherein the second command indicates whether to replace the contents of the clipboard with the selected portion or whether to append the selected portion to the contents of the clipboard.

A system and method for aiding a user in scrolling through a multiple-page are disclosed. The system and method include providing visual and/or audio cues in a graphical user interface (GUI) environment including a window to alert a user that a portion of the document is not currently displayed in the window. The scrolling may also be made more customizable and convenient. In a first aspect, the GUI includes a scroll bar which appears briefly at the center of a window. This indicates to the user that the document contains more than one page and that the user may scroll to view content beyond what is currently displayed. In this aspect, the scroll bar may be dynamic and dockable. Thus, in this aspect a mechanism is provided to allow the user to dock the scroll bar in a desired location. In a second aspect, the system and method include providing voice cues indicating the total number of pages in the document or that the document contains multiple pages. The voice cue may optionally indicate the current page number when the page is scrolled into the window. In another aspect, the method and system include providing variations on the scroll bar and the scrolling related GUI components. The user may customize the scroll bar and GUI components. Customization may include allowing the user to dock the GUI components used for scrolling. These components may be docked to the window's status bar to free additional space for the window.

A method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for managing and displaying a plurality of views of information in a graphical user interface, with views grouped together to form a stack upon which operations that jointly manipulate the views may be performed. A viewclip mechanism is associated with a stack to provide one or more mechanisms for performing actions on the stack such as shuffling forward and backward through views, directly accessing specific views, and unlocking a stack to permit views to be added or removed from the stack. The stack is represented as a single frame which displays one of the views at a time as its contents. Frame manipulation mechanisms, e.g., minimizing, maximizing, resizing, and repositioning, may be applied to the frame to jointly manipulate display characteristics of the plurality of views in the stack.
