A centrifugal separator for removing particles from a fluid stream includes an angular velocity increaser configured to increase the angular velocity of a fluid stream, a flow splitter configured to split the fluid stream to form a concentrated-particle stream and a reduced-particle stream, and an exit conduit configured to receive the reduced-particle stream. An inducer assembly for a turbine engine includes an inducer with a flow passage having an inducer inlet and an inducer outlet in fluid communication with a turbine section of the engine, and a particle separator, which includes a particle concentrator that receives a compressed stream from a compressor section of the engine and a flow splitter. A turbine engine includes a cooling air flow circuit which supplies a fluid stream to a turbine section of the engine for cooling, a particle separator located within the cooling air flow circuit, and an inducer forming a portion of the cooling air flow circuit in fluid communication with the particle separator. A method of cooling a rotating blade of a turbine engine having an inducer includes directing a cooling fluid stream from a portion of turbine engine toward the rotating blade, separating particles from the cooling fluid stream by passing the cooling fluid stream through a inertial separator, accelerating a reduced-particle stream emitted from the inertial separator to the speed of the rotating blade, and orienting the reduced-particle stream by emitting the reduced-particle stream from the inertial separator into a cooling passage in the inducer.

Turbine engine, components, and methods of cooling same

A method for making shaped cooling holes in a substrate by pulsing and stopping a laser while moving the laser or substrate. The method produces shaped cooling holes with a bore angled relative to an exit surface of the combustor liner. One end of the bore is an inlet formed in an inlet surface of the combustor liner. The other end of the bore is an outlet formed in the exit surface of the combustor liner. The outlet has a shaped portion that expands in only one dimension.

Method of forming a cooling hole by laser drilling

A method for fabricating a combustor liner for a gas turbine engine is provided. The method includes providing an annular shell including a plurality of circumferentially extending panels, wherein the plurality of circumferentially extending panels includes a first panel positioned at an upstream end of the shell and a second panel positioned downstream from, and adjacent to, the first panel. The method also includes forming a plurality of primary dilution holes in the first panel and forming a plurality of secondary dilution holes in the second panel, wherein the primary and secondary dilution holes are configured to discharge dilution air into the shell.

An article includes turbulation material bonded to a surface of a substrate via a bonding agent, such as a braze alloy. In an embodiment, the turbulation material includes a particulate phase of discrete metal alloy particles having an average particle size within a range of about 125 microns to about 4000 microns. Other embodiments include methods for applying turbulation and articles for forming turbulation.

Turbine airfoil with separately formed tip and method for manufacture and repair thereof

A gas turbine engine hollow airfoil has chordally spaced apart leading and trailing edges extending radially from a radially inner base to a radially outer airfoil tip. A cooling circuit within the airfoil has radially extending first, middle, and last channels arranged respectively in series with the first channel in fluid communication with a source of cooling air from outside the airfoil. The last channel is in fluid communication with one of the edges. A refresher passageway extends through a radially inner wall bounding a radially inner portion of the last channel and is in fluid communication with the source of cooling air. The refresher passageway is separate, spaced apart, and independent from the first channel. In one embodiment, a metering plate covers an inlet to the refresher passageway and the metering plate has a metering hole over the inlet and the metering hole is adjustable.

A turbine bucket includes an airfoil extending from a platform, having high and low pressure sides; a wheel mounting portion; a hollow shank portion located radially between the platform and the wheel mounting portion, the platform having an under surface. An impingement cooling plate is located in the hollow shank portion, spaced from the under surface, and the impingement plate is formed with a plurality of impingement cooling holes therein.

A gas turbine engine hollow airfoil includes an airfoil outer wall having width wise spaced apart pressure and suction side walls joined together at chordally spaced apart leading and trailing edges of the airfoil and extending radially outward from a base to a tip. The airfoil includes a single three pass aft flowing serpentine cooling circuit and a straight through leading edge cooling channel extending radially through the airfoil and bounded in part by the leading edge. The exemplary embodiment includes a trailing edge cooling plenum and a straight through single pass trailing edge feed channel for providing cooling air to the trailing edge cooling plenum.

A rotor blade for a gas turbine engine including a tip region that facilitates reducing operating temperatures of the rotor blade is described. The tip region includes a first tip wall and a second tip wall extending radially outward from a tip plate of an airfoil. The tip walls extend from adjacent a leading edge of the airfoil to connect at a trailing edge of the airfoil. A notch is defined between the first and second tip walls at the airfoil leading edge. At least a portion of the second tip wall is recessed to define a tip shelf.

Method and apparatus for reducing turbine blade tip temperatures

A cooling hole configuration for an air-cooled component, such as a gas turbine engine airfoil. The cooling hole is configured to have cross-sectional variations and a noncircular-shaped diffuser-type opening that significantly improve the cooling film distribution across the external surface of an airfoil, with the result that heat transfer from the surrounding environment to the airfoil is reduced. The cooling hole is configured to have its central axis at an acute angle to the exterior surface of the airfoil, and defines a noncircular-shaped opening at the airfoil surface. The cooling hole generally has a first region adjacent the airfoil surface and a second region interior to the airfoil. The cooling hole is configured such that the second region has an oblong or oval-shaped cross-section, with a major diameter approximately equal to the major diameter of the first region and a minor diameter less than the major diameter of the first region, with a smooth transition existing between the first and second regions. The oblong shape of the second region is preferably the result of a recess being present in the wall of the cooling hole opposite the direction in which the cooling hole extends toward the airfoil surface, causing the central axis of the cooling hole to have an arcuate shape in which the central axis is disposed at a lesser angle to the airfoil surface in the first region than the angle in the second region. The cooling hole can be generated using a water jet technique.

A turbine nozzle includes outer and inner bands between which extend a plurality of vanes for channeling combustion gases. Each of the vanes includes leading and trailing edges, and pressure and suction sides extending therebetween, and also a bow along the trailing edge to increase pressure in the gases adjacent the inner band. The vanes also include a thermal barrier coating (TBC) selectively disposed solely along the suction side between the leading and trailing edges.

A method of forming a shaped hole in a substrate, including substrates protected by coatings, as is the case where an air-cooled component has a thermal barrier coating for protection from a hostile thermal environment, such as the turbine, combustor and augmentor sections of a gas turbine engine. In particular, cooling holes are formed in an air-cooled component after a ceramic layer has been deposited on the surface of the component without damaging or spalling the ceramic layer. Processing steps generally include forming a hole through the ceramic layer and a substrate protected by the ceramic layer, thereby defining an opening at the surface of the ceramic layer. The diameter of the hole is less than the final size required for the cooling hole. A high-pressure abrasive fluid stream is then directed into the hole to enlarge the cross-section of the hole and impart a noncircular shape to the opening by removing portions of the substrate and ceramic layer without removing the ceramic layer surrounding the resulting noncircular-shaped opening. In a preferred embodiment, the abrasive fluid stream is traversed across the surface of the ceramic through a series of nested patterns that are not concentric with the central axis of the hole. Preferably, the hole acquires the desired noncircular shape in the ceramic layer, but retains a circular shape in the substrate.
