A windage shield system is provided. The system includes an annular cavity having an inlet end and an outlet end. The annular cavity is configured to direct a flow of cooling fluid from the inlet end to the outlet end. The system also includes a source of a flow of cooling fluid coupled in flow communication with the annular cavity. The annular cavity is bounded by a stationary component and a rotating component, and the rotating component introduces heat into the annular cavity by windage effects. The system also includes a cooling channel coupled in flow communication with the outlet end, and a first windage shield extending from the outlet end towards the inlet end within the annular cavity.

Windage shield system and method of suppressing resonant acoustic noise

A method of transferring a fluid flow from a static component to a rotor of a gas turbine engine and a modulated flow transfer system are provided. The modulated flow transfer system includes an annular inducer configured to accelerate the fluid flow in a substantially circumferential direction in a direction of rotation of the rotor. The system further includes a first fluid flow supply including a compressor bleed connection, a feed manifold formed of bendable tubing, and a feed header extending between the compressor bleed connection and the feed manifold. The feed header includes a modulating valve configured to control an amount of fluid flow into the feed manifold. The system also includes a flow supply tube that extends between the feed manifold and the inducer and is couplable to at least one of the plurality of first fluid flow inlet openings through a sliding piston seal.

Method and system for modulated turbine cooling

This document provides hammock systems and methods for using a hammock system. For example, a hammock support system can suspend a hammock over a vehicle by attaching first and second end connectors of a hammock to a pair of support structures, respectively, which are mated with corresponding receiving structures of a vehicle, respectively.

Supporting a hammock on a vehicle

A heat shield and support strut for a turbine engine afterburner. The heat shield can be replaced without moving or disconnecting the fuel tube. The heat shield includes a housing that may be telescoped over the fuel injection tube and is attachable to the strut without moving the housing transverse to a longitudinal axis of the fuel injection tube. The support strut includes a body having an outer end for attachment to an outer wall of the afterburner section, an inner end, and a passage extending through the body from its outer end to its inner end for receiving the fuel injection tube. The inner end has a cavity for receiving the head of the heat shield. The cavity is shaped for a close fit on the head in the cavity. The body has a flat mounting surface in the cavity for engagement by the flat mounting surface of the head.

Afterburner heat shield

A fixed geometry duct defining a gas turbine engine exhaust nozzle includes a plurality of circumferentially adjoining flat triangular facets and coaxial first and second openings at opposite ends thereof. A method of making the duct includes scribing a plurality of lines on a flat sheet metal plate to define the facets, and bending the plate at each of the lines to form the duct.

Faceted exhaust nozzle

An exhaust nozzle for a gas turbine engine includes a converging inlet duct disposed in flow communication with a diverging outlet duct at a throat therebetween. An ejection slot is disposed at the throat, and compressed air from the engine is selectively injected through the slot for fluidically varying flow area at the throat for exhaust gases from the engine.

Fluidic throat exhaust nozzle

A corked bottle opener comprising a stationary shaft and a rotatable stem extending longitudinally from the shaft and mounted for axial movement relative thereto. An adjustably mounted retainer extends from the shaft and engages the neck of the bottle. A jaw member extends from the stem, but is held against rotation, engages the stopper. An actuator rotates the stem to move it axially and thereby raise the jaw member so as to remove the cork.

Corked bottle opener

A high torque actuator for a plug valve of the type having a body with a central chamber having diametrically opposed inlet and outlet ports and a plug within the chamber having a transverse passage therethrough and an upstanding stem. The plug has a first, upper, valve-open position with its transverse passage in alignment with the inlet and outlet ports of the chamber, and a second, lower valve-closed position wherein its transverse passage is oriented at 90.degree. to the chamber inlet and outlet ports and seal means on the plug are in sealing engagement with the chamber walls about the inlet and outlet ports. Drive cam means are introduced between a coupling and the valve stem in order to increase torque output of inclined cam slots without changing or increasing the height of the valve body and plug.
